'Glee' exclusive: Season 2 to feature more Gwyneth and Gaga!

Gaga-PaltrowImage Credit: Ethan Miller/Getty Images; Larry Busacca/Getty ImagesGleeks, I’ve got such amazing scoop that I almost piddled in my pants when I heard it so I can’t imagine how you’re gonna react: EW has learned exclusively that the phenomenal Gwyneth Paltrow is officially reprising her role as Holly Holliday for TWO episodes of Glee in the spring and she’s gettin’ it on with Mr. Schuester!!! Says co-creator Ryan Murphy, “Gwyneth is coming back for two episodes. She’s coming back specifically to date Will [Matthew Morrison]. Those two have become really good friends in real life and had really good chemistry. She’s coming back as a sex education teacher. Gwyneth and I are emailing, talking every week: What are we gonna sing? We’re trying to do something fantastic. So she’ll be  [in episodes] 15 and 16. She comes back [to film] in January and she’s with us for three and a half weeks I think.”

You think that would be enough but I have even more redonkulous news: Lady Gaga just this week gave the Glee producers clearance for tackling her highly anticipated new single, “Born This Way,” which hasn’t even dropped yet! Murphy reveals that the song will be used in a March or April episode and will be centered around closeted gay bully Karofsky (Max Adler). “I love that that song is anthem,” says Murphy. “This show is by nature optimistic and I think a character like Karofsky could turn to booze or pills or alcohol and kill themselves or do something dark. But I also love Max and I love that character and I sorta want that character to have a happy ending. So I don’t really know what that’s going to be, but I do know we’re going to do a whole episode that’s about that song.”

And there’s one more Glee favorite returning: Kristin Chenoweth. She will be back as April Rhodes in the last batch of episodes of the season for a multi-episode arc.

Season 2’s second half is looking awfully good and really, really blonde!

Where the eff is Terri? Either use Jessalyn Gilsig or let her go…just stop teasing her fans!

      • bruno

agreed! this show has such a habit of bringin on great people and giving them nothing (ahem, molly shannon). nice to see gwen egttign some due. i’m REALLY over the chenwith though.

      • Brenda Barrett

Flip – you are the only one who loves Terri. She needs to go permanently. I’m psyched for these upcoming eps!

      • Flip

No I’m not, Brenda. PLENTY of people like Terri, but it’s hard to tell when haters like you scream out your hatred at the top of your lungs.

      • nancy

Ugj god, Terri is the worrrrrrrst. I hope she never shows her batsh*t crazy ass again. Psycho lady!

      • Katja

I actually like Terri in small doses. And Bruno, I completely agree about bringing in great people and giving them NOTHING. Whatever happened to Victor Garber? They cast a man who is arguably a Broadway legend on a musical TV show, and DIDN’T HAVE HIM SING. Or do much of anything, really. That type of thing combined with some of the plot/character inconsistencies from week to week really gives the impression that the show has the attention span of a fruit fly. It’s so bizarre.

      • Danielle

Seriously? Ack. I say GET RID of Terri. There is nothing likeable about the character at all!

      • sara

Terri is awful. I heard she has a drug problem in real life. It shows in her poor acting. Get rid of her.

      • Flip

Now you creeps are just spewing LIES about Jessalyn Gilsig.

I’d take more Terri over the annoying Rachel, Quinn, Santana, Precious, and Finn, that’s fo’ damn’d sure!!!

      • Thais

Flip I was with you until you went and called the beautiful and talented Amber Riley “Precious.” It’s one thing to defend your character/actor (that was immature to accuse Jessalyn Gilsig of a drug problem just because you don’t like the character she plays), but that’s no need to lower yourself to attacking others. It’s childish and low.

I would love for terri to comeback, and terri’s sister!!

      • Danny

HATE HATE HATE her character. She needs to leave.

      • Cindy

Hope Terri never comes back..couldn’t stand the character from day 1. Agree they should’ve used Victor Garber and certainly the always hysterical Molly Shannon but am psyched that Kristen Chenowith is coming back as well as Gwyneth.

      • charles

Can’t stand Terri. Nothing against the actress, though. Loved her on Boston Public a thousand years ago. Just HATE Terri. Good riddance!

      • Flip

Terri’s not going anywhere. She’s a series regular and has been all along. :D

I just want to see MORE of her, that’s all. She’s the most interesting and most complex character on this silly, goofy show.

      • tickles

I thought Molly Shannon stood out like a sore thumb. She was horrible.

ryan murphy said not to justin beiber claiming “he doesnt have an extensive catalog”. gaga doenst have an extensive catalog. both singers have released just 1 cd then a rerelease of their debut cd.

      • BlackIrish4094

        Totally agree…

      • Sarah

Yes. But GaGa has a far better catalog.

      • meh

@Sarah, no she doesn’t it’s the same crap over and over.

    • Moonshine

Charice aka Sunshine Corazon will be singing Meet Me Halfway! ~ very exciting for her comeback!

    oh and first! lol

        it was a fail

  • mhold

More Gwyneth = Less Watching of this once great show.

    • jordan

let the door hit you on the way out

    • Nat

Agreed! Her episode was terrible. Am I the only one who thought her already unlikeable character was made even more so by her lifeless portrayal?

      • Kris

Yeah I wasnt a big fan of that character. She wasn’t that likable.

      • Tee

I liked her character and thought it was a fun episode – though the cheeziness was getting a little unbearable at the end, the episodes often seem to end in that direction. The character and the disruption is not something I’d want around too much though.

In general the show is really going overboard with new/guest characters too.

      • Bobby’s Robot

I thought it was the best episode of a disappointing season.

      • Dominic

I think it was a great ep amongst a bunch of great eps (the last six or so have been consistently superb). And what wasn’t to like about her character – the snippets of how she used to teach her classes with song/acting were hilarious all by themselves.

      • Steph

What? I thought this was one of the best this season. I caught up with all of S2 Glee over Christmas break and this is the episode I didn’t skip through (Rocky Horror was the low point IMHO).

Lifeless? I don’t understand…were you watching clips of her in the Royal Tennenbaums instead? She was lively, funny, dancing, zany. I don’t get anything from her performance as lifeless.

    • A

I HATED her first appearance, and now another?? Why?? So many other talented people that could guest star……

      • Betty

Oh YES!!!! GWYNETH was awesome and that episode was awesome and I am super excited. Could do without any more Kirsten Chenowith, as talented as the little gal is. Hoping that Kurt kisses Blaine and that it’s a hot one. :-)

    • NP

Agree completely. I watched Glee for the high school characters, not the ever increasing amount of guest stars. If I wanted to see Gwyneth Paltrow, I’d go see Country Strong.

    • Nick

Wrong… More Gwyneth means this hater of Glee will watch it. Her episode was fun and mostly coherent, which is more than I can say for the others I’ve seen since the halcyon days of the first half of the first season and the Madonna episode.

    • Alberto

Did you see the rendition of True Colors they did last week? I know you love that song and I thughot it was brilliant!I just ordered my Gleek T-shirt online. I heard that Glee isn’t coming back to Fox until APRIL because of American Idol starting up in January! I think that is an insane move because Glee has such a huge audience right now. We have to wait until APRIL for more GLEE awesomeness! *sobs*In the meantime, NBC has this show coming on called Sing Off . Should be good for those of us who will be missing our Glee fixes come two weeks from now.Reply by on December 5th, 2009 at Saturday, December 5, 2009 @ 11:06 am@CP, I won’t be watching any singing reality shows.

  • J

Great news about Kristin Chenoweth. Love her!

Wasn’t Idina Menzel supposed to return this season too?

    • Zach

Ryan Murphey said she would be, but he really likes to tell the press about every single idea in development even though many dont come into fruition.

    • Bill

I’m with you J. Kristin and Idina are both Broadway mega-talents. I think that they both bring electricity to any episode where they perform a production number. Idina paired with Lea is dynamite too.

    • Giovanni

I love Idina but she got her own musical show (on ABC I think) so I doubt she’d come back due to contracts.

      Just my thoughts…

      • Courtney

I’m abroad and out of the loop on so many things…please tell about this new musical show!

      • Giovanni

ABC is currently developing not one, but two musical-themed shows. The hour-long show will feature Idina, as a single mom of a teenager who waits tables and sings at bar mitzvahs and the like to make ends meet. The series will be written by Bob Kushell, who recently has credits such as “Samantha Who?” to his name.
The new show looks to be in the style of “Gilmore Girls,” and we all know what a huge success that show was. If they can get someone a little more well known to play Idina’s teenage daughter, then ABC could finally capitalize on the musical genre!

  • Anna

Having Gwyneth back almosts cancels out the Bieber news..almost…

    • Megan

Wait, wait, wait, wait–what Bieber news? I’m scared to find out…

      • Anna

It’s pretty bad. Apparently Glee is planning a Justin Bieber tribute episode.

      • julie

i don’t think it’s a tribute, i think he’s just going to be on it. he gave some interview where he said he wanted to bring some brit singer, cheryl cole or something, on to play a subsitute teacher. he’s obviously not seen the show or he’d know that storyline’s been done.

      • Casey

There’s an article about it on TV Line.

      • Tom

      • sil

        double barf

      • kieller

Does this mean they’re finally gonna tackle a real lesbian storyline?

      • Julie

Ryan Murphy already said it’s not a bieber tribute and his would be a small part, Sam singing a song so settle down.

  • Mo

I liked Gwenyth’s episode since it focused on the “kids” unlike others with guest stars. But I don’t like hearing 3 separate spoilers, none of which focus on the original 12. I want to hear about Mercedes and Puck and Tina. Couldn’t care less about Karofsky.

    • Mary

Actually, I’m hoping they do something amazing with Karofsky. I new the actor portraying him was in show choir so you know he can sing. Glee can honestly portray the difficulties many gay kids have in coming out and I think they will have Karofsky come out eventually.

      • Boop

They’ve already done this. Ad nauseum.

      • BlackIrish4094

I agree with the above poster, the gay kids coming out thing has been beaten to death on this show. Enough already.

    • Rae

Agreed! Let’s hear more about Mercedes and that Anthony guy. I want to see see how their date plays out!

  • VioletF

jj6 – my first reaction too! squeeeeee!

Looking forward to the new season!

  • Drew

The only bad thing about this is the lack of Idina Menzel news. I’ve been requesting a Menzel/Chenowith showdown, and the timing for it was perfect halfway through the second half of season 1, and it didn’t happen.

VERY excited for a Holly Holliday reprise.

    • matt

I heard the actresses don’t like each other (even though they have worked together before) and requested to not be filmed together. May have been a rumor though.

      • jeanab

that is a lie they have talked about it before. it is just a rumor some press person made up

  • Laurie

I like Holly as long as the episodes aren’t all about her like Home became all about Kristin Chenoweth. Guest stars only work when they keep the focus on the kids. Of course after that Justin Beiber news I may not be Glee when this happens.

  • T.C.

I’ve taken Glee off my DVR. It sort of morphed into the “Love Boat” with all the focus on the guest stars (and insipid themes) and the regular cast relegated to the background. I suppose a “Love Boat” format isn’t that bad, but it’s just not what the show was when it first started. So even if it’s not exactly terrible, I’m not going to watch it because it just doesn’t measure up to it’s early promise. Every week it’s a let-down.

    • PJ

That’s actually a pretty good analogy of what Glee has become.

    • MZ

I was just telling my husband that “Glee” is turning into “Love Boat”. The show needs to stick with the main characters and not focus on the guest stars. The kids are going to graduate at some point and those storylines can’t be revisited. The show is circling the shark! If they get Charo on the show perhaps the guest star phenomena will be forgiven! ;)

    • jeanab

i agree 100%. i just watch the songs and be done with it. ryan murphy need to stick to the amazing idea of the 1st season. and actually have a good plot line

    • dean novak

If you are no longer watching the show, why are you commenting

      • Me

I love when people ask that question. Just because you do not watch something, or no longer watch something doesn’t mean you can’t have an opinion on it. If they didn’t comment, this would be nothing but a big Glee love fest and no one for you to complain about.

      • Zakry

Yeah, but if you aren’t watching the show, you don’t know what you’re talking about. So, you can save your uninformed opinion.

    • Diana

I’m still watching although I have to totally agree with you about the Love Boat. It’s not the guest stars, it’s the writing them in that feels boxed up. Fix the writing and then the guest stars won’t stick out so much.
I liked GP in her episode…but HATED “Make ‘em Laugh.” If you can’t do an iconic number well, then don’t even try it. Yawn.

  • Jane

Couldn’t care less about Will or Kurt or his storyline. I’m a very pissed fan. Remember Rachel, Quinn, Puck and Finn??? At least the show was fun when THEY were the focus.

    • tracy bluth

Quinn’s story line with Terri was the only bad thing about the first half on season one. The character is boring and unlikable, and Dianna Agron’s “acting” doesn’t help that.

      • Flip

Actually, that was the best story of the first half of season one. Ever since then, the show’s been downhill.

      • matt

Nah, I agree somewhat with Tracy. I like Dianna Agron and think she’s a good actress. The character was unlikable, for me, until she met Sam who I think gives her balance and likability. But yeah, the pregnancy storyline was stale after a few episodes. Rachel and Finn have had enough screen time, thank you. Hopefully some of the minor characters get more time like…MERCEDES!?

      • Ha

Seriously Flip, that storyline belonged on The Young and The Restless, not Glee.

      • More Quinn

The twin pregnancy storylines sucked (and were completely misogynistic). But Quinn is interesting character, and I like the journey that they brought her on in season 1 (ie – her unlikely but excellent friendship with Mercedes). And Dianna Agron is a wonderful actress who I love watching on screen.
It is such a damned shame that she has been given nothing to do this season.

      • Randal

OK, I just hulued this epsidoe maybe the 2nd or 3rd I’ve watched and I just don’t get the draw. It was just like any other dramedy of recent years, with the possible exception of the annoyingly lip-synced singing.Oh well, I’m happy that you and others get so much enjoyment out of it.Reply by on December 5th, 2009 at Saturday, December 5, 2009 @ 11:27 am@Ren, but the actors are the ones actually doing the singing. That’s one reason I like it so much. It’s darker than most dramedies, too.

    • Pierre

Good punk! Current punk and good punk don’t go together in a sntneece very much these days, or it’s harder to find maybe because I am in my 30s and have had my fun. I don’t know. I like this, though. Thanks to my friend who introduced me to it.

  • Holly

Bring on the Wemma development and Emma jealousy!!

  • elena

Okay, why are we having a Karofsky-centric episode? I’ve had my ups and downs with this season of Glee, but it came back full force with that stellar sectionals ep. Ryan Murphy, here’s the thing: you can barely characterize the fab kids you have now (does Tina actually have a personality? and Satana…as much fun as she is being the big bad bitch on campus, she’s impossible to root for because her motivation/background is a big question mark), do you REALLY think that there should be a whole ep about a guy no one likes or cares about? Maybe Glee would benefit from a larger pool of writers. Something needs to change…

    • Zakry

Because there is a story to tell here, Elena. Personally, I was wondering if we were going to get more dimension to Karofsky, or is he just going to be a self-hating bully? I’m glad the answer is what it is.

  • Ellie

This is all very nice and all but I have one question….WTF ABOUT JONATHAN GROFF!?

    • Brenda Barrett

He’s GOT to return eventually and I can’t wait!

  • kate

    Another episode of guest stars???

Are they forgetting that the ORIGINAL cast is like a dozen people? Are they ever going to get their own storylines, or is it all going to be tribute episodes and guest stars from now on?
