'Grey's Anatomy,' 'Modern Family,' 'Castle' plus three more ABC shows get early renewals

Six ABC shows are getting early renewals for next season.

No surprise here: Top-rated hits Grey’s Anatomy and Modern Family are both coming back next fall.

Also on the list, Grey’s successful spin-off Private Practice and Nathan Fillion’s strong-and-steady detective drama Castle.

Here’s who else made the early cut (and who didn’t):

Cougar Town: Sure, it loses some of its Modern Family lead-in, but it continues to perform well on Wednesday nights and critics say the show has really started to find its voice this season.

The Middle: ABC’s stalwart comedy manages to perform solidly despite having the tough job of jump-starting the network’s comedy block.

As for the rest….

Desperate Housewives is expected to return. With some of the show’s actresses’ contracts up for renewal, the deal-making could take a bit longer than other shows (as you can probably imagine).

There’s been some rumors that the rather pricey Brothers & Sisters could be in its final season. ABC might wait to see what pilots it’s picking for new fall series before making a decision on its fate.

And, yes, I suspect I know your biggest burning question: “What about V?!”

Since V just returned, ABC is waiting for more ratings data to make a decision on that front, which isn’t surprising and shouldn’t worry fans … (much).

Overall, network sources point out that just because a show isn’t on the first list of renewals doesn’t mean it’s not getting renewed — there are still months before the deadline in May.

ABC plans to officially announce all these pickups at the TCA press tour this morning. Keep checking the Inside TV blog as the broadcast portion of TCA is rolling all week…

      • Flip

Yes it did, fool. Read the article!

      • Jenny

        Lol, whoops you’re right.

      • marty

don’t worry, its another poorly written article from EW.

    • Dash

I just squealed. I love COUGAR TOWN! I was seriously worried with it going off the air for awhile. I love Cougar Town!!!!!!! Yippeee!

      • eyeheartnyc

I think Cougar Town’s renewal deserves a toast! Time to breakout Big Karl!

      • Anastasia

I’m glad folks are so happy about Cougar Town. I’ve tried watching a few times, wanted to like it, but it’s just not there for me. I do understand however, that if you are a fan of the show it is great news that it is renewed, nothing like your fave getting the ax before its time.

      • MM

Breaking out Big Karl over here in Toronto in celebration!!!!!!

      • Cindi

@Anastasia A comment where you admit the show doesn’t do it for you, but glad it makes other viewers happy? Mature comments such as these have no business in an EW forum. :D

    • AlexC

Im so happy love Cougar town!!!!

    • Jeff

      Yes, indeed!

    • Hayes

DITTO!!!! So happy about this news.

    • Nicole Much

Break out Big Carl! This is amazing news! :)
ABC just made me do a confidence dance, what? :)

  • MC

Great news for ‘Castle’ and ‘Cougar Town’. ABC just made my day!

Has there been any word on “Detroit 1-8-7″?

    • JD

Yes, and that word is “terrible”.

      • Jerome

Go spew your negativity somewhere else JD, I like Detroit 1-8-7 too and I hope it gets renewed.

      • Michael

        Nice one, JD!

      • kennedyDC

oh come on … what JD said was funny. have a sense of humor.

      • Bfleet

To actually answer SC’s question, there has been no word on Detroit 187 as of yet. It is by far the lowest ‘rated’ scripted show as of this moment though, so regardless of the quality of the show, its renewal chances are essentially nil.

      • Bfleet

Lowest rated scripted show on ABC, that is.

      • Rosie

        hahahaha awesome

    • Ap

Wondering about this show as well. I really like it and hope to see it next season.

      • Doris

I love Detroit 1-8-7 and Michael Imperioli. I hope it’s renewed. I loved Life on Mars and missed him when it ended.

    • Danny

I like ‘Detroit 187′. I usually watch ‘the good wife’ at that time. but I watched 187 over the holidays and I liked it. That usually means that they will cancel it like 90% of the other tv shows I like.

    • James Hibberd

Yes, as a matter of fact, ABC’s Paul Lee did address Detroit 187 at TCA… from my notes, and this is a bit rough, he basically said: “we haven’t made our decisions yet. I’d like it to stay … Michael is brilliant… it’s become a really iconic show …it does what NYPD Blue did in its day… we hope it comes back.” All that said, from a reporter perspective? … not very likely

  • Alie

YAY!!! Castle and Modern Family!!!! 2011/12 is gonna be great :)

  • davey

So happy Cougar Town has been renewed! It deserves it.

    • Flip

Totally agree. It’s the funniest show on t.v. as far as I’m concerned, and I like MF as well.

  • Billie72

Its great news for Cougar Town indeed …

If only we could get another season for a final season for V … since I hope that ABC will give the producers and writers a chance to finish their story …

  • chris

Great news for “Cougar Town”…it really has turned into an amazing ensemble!

    • JP

      Agreed completely!!

    • JLC

Yeah, I was puzzled when they said it started to find its voice this season. The ensemble was gelling well last season, once they got past the “cougar” stuff in the first couple episodes. Great show.

  • PJL

@S.C I agree, what about Detroit 1-8-7? Michael Imperioli is awesome.

  • PM

I think ABC wanted to remew them now rather than wait until May since those are their most watched and highed rated shows on the network. Castle’s done very well against rival CBS’ Hawaii Five O in the same time slot at 10 pm Monday.

  • Chris

    Love, love, love Cougar Town!

  • RDH

I’m a fan of Brothers and Sisters, but I feel it has run its course. I would, however, LOVE to see a Kevin/Scotty spin-off!

    • fireflyfan

absolutely! They were my favorite couple next to kevin and rebecca in the very beginning

      • Kp

        Justin and Rebecca?

  • Stephanie

YES! LOVE Cougartown!!..imaginary tip of my hat to ABC

    • JohnT

Imaginery opera glowes… What? What are we doing?

      • Mike

        Imaginery clown nose “honk” “honk”

Curious about “Better with you”. I like its chances, because it holds most of “The Middle’s” audience, but still curious and would like to know.

    • Francisco

I hope ‘Better With You’ gets renewed as well. The show has really grown on me.

      • Kate

I love Better With You. This and Modern Town are my favorite sitcoms on ABC!

    • ShannonW

Yes yes! All for Better With You. It’s such a nice little delight to watch every week. Crossing my fingers.

  • Nick

  • Amy

I used to love Brothers and Sisters. Now I find myself watching it out of habit and can’t even remember what happened 5 minutes after it aired.

Such a shame for a former good show.

    • Phil

The last 2 episodes since its return last week have been rather boring, but I say that all of the Dec. episodes before the holiday break (including the Xmas one) were by far some of the most enjoyable episodes EVER! The show has an excellent ensemble, and tries to give everyone a good shot in the spotlight…I even found myself mentioning to my mom over the holidays that it would be a shame if this was the last season.
My only problem with the show is the unexpected chubby Hispanic daughter for Kevin & Scotty…even my sister said was like that kinda came from nowhere, especially following Kitty’s adoption of an African-American baby. I understand the creators wish to show just how diverse this family actually is…but I mean c’mon. The show isnt going to last a decade from now where Evan is going to grow up & Olivia will be a Latino girl being raised by two gay dads…its a bit much, but I do hope the series returns for another year.

      • Terry

Half the cast is vacating Brothers and Sisters it seems. Holly left last night, as well as her husband, looks like Kitty’s on her way out, Rebecca left early in the season. Tommy’s been gone. It’s going to be like a skeleton crew holding on for dear life. it does seem like the writers have lost their “zip.”

    • K

ITA. It’s like the writers can’t figure out what to do with the characters anymore and there is no direction. As much as I liked this show before, this should be its last season if they keep this up. I will always enjoy the family dynamic between the Walkers, but that just isn’t enough to carry the show on anymore.
