Fox won't clone 'Glee,' says rivals dumb to try

ABC and The CW may be seeking ways to knock off the phenomenal success of Glee, but Fox is content to have just one musical dramedy, thank you very much.

“I like the fact we’ve had a monopoly [on the genre], but I’m not going to clone ‘Glee,’” Reilly told critics at press tour.

Which isn’t to say the network would never-ever consider a Glee spin-off…

Sources at the network didn’t want Reilly’s comments about not “cloning” the hit taken quiiiiite that far, even though there’s no current plans to spinoff of the show and creator Ryan Murphy is busy working on several other unrelated projects.  “Never say never,” and all that. (The network did look into a half-hour musical Partridge Family type project with Kristin Chenoweth as star that some outlets misreported as a Glee spinoff, but sources say that idea is currently “dormant”).

Asked what impact any other musicals will have on the success of Glee, Reilly seemed unfazed.

“It will just make Glee look that much better, most likely,” he said.

A critic asked: Are other networks “stupid” to try and make their own musicals?

“It’s always tough to chase something that’s hot,” Reilly said, noting that even if you execute a show well, you’re doomed to remain in the shadow of the original.

A critic pressed: Are competitors “stupid” to try?

And Reilly just went for it: “Some of them are.”

    Glee cloned HSM

except for the fact that HSM was from Disney, meaning most of the storylines done on Glee would never have been possible on the goody-two-shoes Disney Channel.

Glee is NOTHING like HSM – those who say it is have never seen one or the other.

    • Jane

HSM cloned every high-teen genre there exists.

      HSM fans wish.

“HSM” wasn’t a TV series, they were TV and theater releases.

It does seem stupid to try, but I wouldn’t mind a clone of Glee that actually cares about plot and character consistency rather than just the music. I watch Glee because I loved show choir (which was actually the cool kids’ arts class at my school, even if I myself wasn’t cool) and I love musicals, and so I still enjoy Glee to a certain extent, but I really really wish they would tighten up the writing. Like, a lot.

I think they will hopefully the second half of this season. The first half felt like they were very much celebrating their success by doing so little plot-based storylines, I’m hoping it was temporary.

    Bring back Popular.

“It’s just that I’m tired of being compared.”

The episodes are choppy and thrown together. New storylines “seem” to begin but nothing builds on it. Ex. Mercedes was supposed to hook up w/ Anthony and nothing transpired. if this keeps up, I won’t be surprised if a glee-inspired show takes over.

Mercedes is a fat gal, they cant ever been seen in a loving relationship on tv.

(I’m a fat gal as well and the comment was made in a sarcastic tone)

if the “clones” have actually character development, multilayered plots and characters….I’ll jump the Glee ship and go to that.

Give me excellent writing/acting/characters any day over a catchy song.
