FX's 'Lights Out' debut takes ratings punch

"You not watchin' my show? Huh?!" (Craig Blankenhorn/FX)

FX’s new boxing series didn’t deliver a knockout punch in the ratings Tuesday night, and instead took a few body blows from Nielsen (and the fighting puns will stop …. now).

Looks like only 1.5 million viewers (793,000 million adults 18-49) watched the series premiere, which not only is far cry from the mega opening of last year’s Justified (4.2 million), but also was on par with the now-deceased Terriers (1.6 million, though Lights out did edge out Terriers by 17% in the adult demo).

To be honest, it was because of TERRIERS that I didn’t bother to watch. I’m not willing to forgive FX just yet… and why get invested in something that’s going to be cancelled anyway?

    • Jim

That is a pretty lame reason to not watch. A lot of hard work went into this show, and it’s apparent in the first episode. I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season.

      • MockingbirdGirl

Actually, it’s the perfect reason not to watch. After the TERRIERS cancellation, FX president John Landgraf held a press conference in which he said that the show had “a subtle charm”… but that the FX “brand” was for thing that were more “edgy.” If that’s what they’re aiming for by replacing TERRIERS with this, then I feel no compulsion to watch.

what a shame terriers is no more i really liked it and this boxing show is OK not great, not fantastic just OK lets see how long FX waits to kills this off

  • Jacob

The show looked too dark, and while I’m a fervent admirer of Breaking Bad and Justified, I couldn’t bring myself to watch ANOTHER show as bleak as this one appears to be.
And I kinda hate boxing, so there’s that…

  • Big D

    Terriers redux?

  • Alex

If this goes the same way as Terriers (R.I.P.) I may have to take a break from television for awhile.

  • hvbb334

VERY DISAPPOINTED,,,I waited several weeks to watch this show..

I found the character not likable and the action very cliche.

Read “Johnny Bad Ass” by The BIg Lefthook for real drama and action

I agree, you gotta love the main character for a show to work and i wasn’t sold on him. It’ll be like terriers, it’ll get good but it’ll be too late, should of save this for the summer

      • Terrah

Unparalleled accuracy, unequivocal clarity, and undeniable iomptrnace!

  • Thom

Not a surprise. I’m a huge boxing fan and FX show fan so I was excited when I heard about this show, but the ads made it look boring and very, very run-of-the-mill.

  • Pat D.

I missed the premiere because all the ads I saw just said “January”, not giving any specific date. Rather dumb move on FX’s part.

    • Dave

I think I probably saw at least a dozen ads where they notably stated “1-11-11″ as the premiere date.

      • Pat D.

I cant say I saw any of those….

    • TBL567

When a cable network advertises on another network (e.g. NBC) they’re not always allowed to include full tune-in detail. It isn’t FX’s choice when they can’t include the date!

  • Bmospr04

all of the characters were subpar, you need one guy or girl to sell the show and they dont have it. If you go the unknown route, the writing better be good(The Glades)

  • Dusty

The last 3 posts I’ve read by this guy have contained pretty obvious grammatical errors. Does anybody proofread these?

    • zack

      look like u do!

  • Sheila

Hope this show does well – once I discovered Terriers I loved it. Too bad FX does nothing to let people find these shows, like TNT replays new episodes every Saturday. Instead FX treats you to endless replays of “Dude, Where’s My Car?” Lame. I hope Hank and Britt went left.

  • Ken

Maybe more people would’ve watched if FX did another ORIGINAL series. I’m sure the writing/acting/directing is great, but with The Fighter out, and this type of story told SOOO many times already, it’s good no one watched. It’ll leave room for something NEW.

  • Erik

Ken, it’s nothing like The Fighter. Except for the boxing. This show is more real-life situations, and I don’t think it’s right to judge it just yet. That first epsiode left me hanging, and I can’t wait for next weeks.

    • Olive

Um! The Fighter is based on real situations and real people. Your statement is illogical.

  • Kevin

Damn I don’t think its gonna last and I thoroughly enjoyed the pilot. F/X has to cancel it if the ratings don’t go up because they set a precedent with Terriers

  • barry

I liked it there is a lot of directions this show can go. I also thought the main character was someone you could in the end root for.

  • Jack Nolte

Nip/Tuck.-The best show FX ever had.

What happened to damages? Didn’t the show got picked up or something?

    • Dave

Damages was picked up exclusively by DirecTV and airs on their 101 Network. They are currently airing the first season and the new season begins this summer.

      • John

The Shield still remains FX’s best series. Nip/Tuck had a good first season, an okay second season, and the rest was crap.

    • MCS

Nip Tuck was strong early on but certainly not FX’s best series. It would have to be a three way tie between The Shield, Damages and Sons of Anarchy
