Image Credit: Bret Hartman/NBC; Sergei Bachlakov/ABC; Cliff Lipson/CBSIt was a tough Tuesday for ABC’s dramas: No Ordinary Family, V and Detroit 1-8-7 either tied or hit series lows in the key adult demographic, which forced the Alphabet into fourth place for the night, according to early estimates. ABC earned a 1.5 rating/4 share in 18-49 and averaged 5.4 million. Bummer days, because high-concept shows like Family and V need all the help they can get if the networks are to be persuaded that genre shows can work. Where are you, mythology fans? Or are you just not into a super-strong Michael Chiklis or the lizard ladies of V?
CBS was No. 1 for the night in viewers (17.3 million) and 18-49 (3.5/9), fueled by more great performances by NCIS (4.5/12, 21.9 million) NCIS: LA (3.7/9, 18.0 million) and The Good Wife (2.3/6, 12.3 million). Each 18-49 ratings point equals 1.3 million. NBC was second in the demo (2.8/7) and viewers (7.6 million), with The Biggest Loser: Couples earning a 3.2/8 and 8.6 million, followed by Parenthood (2.2/6, 5.6 million).
Fox came in third in the demo (1.7/4) after running a repeat of Glee and an original of Million Dollar Money Drop (1.8/5, 5.1 million). On to ABC: Family posted a series low 1.5/4 and averaged 5.4 million. V got a 1.9/5 and tied its series low. It averaged 5.7 million. And Detroit earned a 1.1/3 — another series low — and lured 5.2 million.
The CW ran repeats.

V is just a bad show now, amiright or amiright? too bad about NOF – I haven’t watched this week’s yet, but it’s alright. kind of missed opportunity to do more with the concept, though.
Actually I think that V is finally getting interesting. It’s too bad it took this long for everything to fall into place.
V is pretty good. We enjoy it
it could always be better and just might. I hope it gets a chance
Sorry to see those numbers for No Ordinary Family. It’s my favorite new show of the season. I’ve been watching it from the start and it’s been getting better and better as the season rolls along. Too bad more folx aren’t watching. Hopefully ABC will be patient with it, but I know their track record of dropping good shows with low viewership. I will stick with it to the end.
I am a huge “The Good Wife” fan, and so I am glad its ratings win the period. But “Detroit 187″ is good, and being hurt by “V” and “NOF.”
I also want No Ordinary Family to do well… as for V, I would at least like some closure…. as for D187… … …
I love both shows. I watched V, and taped No Ordinary Family. V has been fantastic since the return.
ABC in North Texas preempted NOF for some stupid local thing so I didn’t even get to contribute to its horrible ratings. Apparently, my ABC will be re-airing the episode at 2am on Saturday. Thanks ABC!
If V is going under, they better at least give us an ending. Not the kind of show you want to leave hanging.
If ABC cancels the show we will be left hanging since all 10 episodes have already been taped …
If u want an ending then watch the 1983 Version.. They all die to germs or V for Virius!!! Haha. This show sucked like a played out Vampire!! With only 5 million Viewers, this poor Redo is done!!
The reboot “V” was a misfire from the get-go. They jettisoned most of the stuff that made the original fun and replaced it with dull, overwrought mumbo-jumbo and colorless characters. I’m surprised it’s made it this far, not surprised even the few faithful are mostly tuning out. It’s a shame, because done right, a “V” reboot could have been amazing.
I’m trying to give No Ordinary Family a chance, but it just isn’t that good. I like the (adult) leads a lot, but the writing and story lines aren’t strong enough. Sometimes the look on Michael Chiklis’s face clearly says, “Are they really making me say this line?” It could have been good.
Same here… I really really tried to like NOF. I just couldn’t get past the sad storylines and lame dialogue. Good concept, really poor execution.
Me too! I like the concept and would love to see more genre shows on TV, as the article mentions, but I gave up on this one after just a few episodes because the writing was so terrible. It’s sad, too, because I like Julie Benz and Autumn Reaser a lot.
NOF has actually gotten alot better from the first couple of episodes
Detroit 187 is actually my favorite new show of the year. I really like the characters they have written.
But it’s not a great fit with the other shows.
I tuned in for Detroit 187, but I wish it had stronger lead-ins. I finally gave up on No Ordinary Family over the holiday break. V is just terrible.
I agree. It is my favorite show too. I actually prefer that show over everything on in that time slot so my DVR gets a workout. Sadly Parenthood gets left by the wayside, and I DVR Southland at midnight. I DVR the Good wife too, but I always watch 1-8-7 first. I bet if more people watched it a few times they would get into it. That is a show that is up against too many good other shows.
I really like V. I hope it sticks around. I liked the premise of NOF, but have never been able to get into it.
Let NBC be patient with PARENTHOOD, please. Sorry for DETROIT 1-8-7 as it is good, just can’t overcome GOOD WIFE and has bad lead-in with V. It’s a shame no one believes in Friday or Saturday primetime anymore. FAMILY may have good shot there. OR maybe Sunday at 8? When families could watch together. I am tired of over-the-top charity home remodels myself.
I really like V but ABC doesn’t allow you to watch the show online anymore. Now that I’ve missed the past two episodes I’m done. I feel sorry for the cast because it seems like ABC just wants this show to die.
V is a lot better this year & is full of action. I truly hope that NBC doesn’t give it the boot. What a shame. That seems to happen with the few shows I actually get into. Is there anyway to let the Network know that there are people out who enjoy this genre?
The big networks just need to give up trying to do scifi for awhile. They’re just embarassing themselves with amateurish crap like V, The Cape, and No Ordinary Family.
Joss Whedon should have his own network….imagine the quality of scifi genre programming we would get then!
Though it is an increasingly popular idea that genre shows should be looking into new distribution methods (online) via subscription service and non-network funding. So hopefully when that arrives, we’ll get some excellent shows.
One element that I feel makes most shows successful, even though people usually make fun of it, is a romance angle within a bigger story. Look at the success of Lost…they reached a lot of fans just by using a love triangle. Castle has the tension between Becket & Castle. The Office had all the years of waiting for Jim & Pam. It works!
Except everyone hated the love triangle on lost. It was stupid. Mostly bc it involved kate. Great show, but one of its worst story lines
Maybe everyone hated it by the end, but there was a time when it attracted a lot of women who might otherwise not have watched the show (or maybe it was just the hot men). The key to having a large audience is to attract a wide array of plots…humor, love, sci-fi, drama, etc. If you can have all that, chances are you’ll be pretty successful.
