'Community' planning Dungeons & Dragons episode

Chevy Chase as Dungeon Master?

NBC’s Community is planning an upcoming episode centered around the cast playing the role-playing classic Dungeons & Dragons.

Unlike last year’s fan-favorite paintball episode, though, the D&D episode won’t go full tilt and have the cast, like, running around the forest with swords or anything, creator Dan Harmon said.

“They’re just sitting at a table playing,” he told critics at TCA press tour. “But it’s stylized to make it interesting and people are going to like it a lot.”

Another Very Special Episode coming up is set entirely around Chase’s character Pierce Hawthorne being in the hospital.

“I consider it special any time the episode doesn’t take place [on campus],” Harmon said. “Pierce is in the hospital the entire episode, it’s shot in a completely different way and is a completely different experience from the normal show.”

Excitingly vague!

Can’t wait community special episodes are great

  • T

In that case, can we get some “very special” recaps please???!!!!

    • Kate

      I agree. Community deserves recaps!!

    • Dalia

I agree! Last night they played a rerun of the Halloween episode and it was brilliant.

  • Beck

I know nothing about Dungeons and Dragons, but I’m in! Hopefully Señor Chang will be around more too. I miss El Tigre!

    • Matt

Of course he’ll be around. He cannot be killed.

      • Kate

He just hasn’t been around much. It seems like they’re not sure what to do with him now that he isn’t a teacher. I miss his “true-o, false-o, none of the above” tests.

      • Cameron

I have a theory that Chang has been sparse mainly due to Ken Jeong filming “The Hangover 2″

  • Rob

omg! I’m so excited! like Jesse Spano excited!

    • Ann

Somewhere Abed is cheering for you!

  • Becca

I think Abed is going to be the Dungeon Master. I love these bottle episodes Community does. Also cannot wait to she the shenanigans the group gets into at a hospital. Would love to see one of them pretending to be a doctor (it would be extra hilarious if it was Chang). Also I wonder how great the chances of Rich being on the hospital episode…since he is a doctor after all.

I can’t wait for this. I hope it’s as good as the Freaks and Geeks episode where the played D&D. I can’t wait to see how excited Troy and Abed will be while playing.

    • cal

Sweet. Always excited to see Community take on a new subject, whether it be zombies, wargames, space or chicken finger mafias. I never get tired of this show!

  • Kristen

    Can’t wait!

Didnt the IT crowd just do this in Series 4. Rip Off…

    • G.F.

Because doing an episode centered around a game released in the ’70s is blazingly original to begin with. I’m sure that whatever Community does, it will be hilarious in its own way.

    • B

Right because the IT crowd invented people playing a game. Besides that the IT Crowd is a British sitcom. Seeing as I had to look it up, I’m going to guess it’s not as popular as you imagine.

      • Staring

Speaking of the IT Crowd, has anyone ever seen the pilot for the US version that starred Joel Mchale?

    • Jim

Sarah Silverman Program did it before IT crowd, and I certainly wouldn’t consider IT’s version a rip off. It’s a reference to something that has existed for years. Speaking of IT crowd though, Richard Ayoyade, who plays Moss, is directing an upcoming Community episode.

  • Mole

Betcha that the Pierce-in-hospital episode turns into a Cuckoo’s Nest homage.

  • Dave

I’ve really come to love this show so much. Last year, it wasn’t quite must see for me. But now, I think it’s become more consistently hilarious. NBC just played the zombie Halloween episode and the episode with Troy’s 21st birthday. Both awesome episodes.

    • Kristina

hmmm I actually thought last season was better. But regardless, very funny stuff.

  • Jay

Did anyone notice that “Conspiracy Theories and Interior Design” was the episode scheduled to air at 8 p.m. EST but the Halloween episode was shown instead. I didn’t see an official announcement anywhere but my guess was that “Theories” was pulled because of **spoiler alert ** the fake but realistic-looking multiple shootings in the episode’s last act ** that could upset viewers in light of the Arizona shootings last weekend. Just wondering if the show was yanked by NBC or the show’s producers? Even though it’s a comedy — a very good one — I think the episode swap was the right thing to do.

    • Kate

Dan Harmon (the creator) mentioned the switch on twitter earlier today. I don’t think it was his idea, but I get why it was done.

  • J.J.

Please, please, please recap this show!!!

  • Ben

That’s going to be a great episode! I can hardly wait til the cheating at the dice begins. I’d love to sit in on that game…

  • Beth

    YAY!

  • Brian E.

Genius. Can’t wait for both. Got two friends hooked on this show over Christmas.
