'Californication' renewed; won't end like 'Lost'

Jordin Althaus/Showtime

UPDATED: Hank Moody is getting a fifth season.

Showtime has picked up Californication for another round, and don’t expect producers to put the brakes on the show anytime soon. Asked by a critic at TCA if he’s tempted to set a series end date like Lost, executive producer Tom Kapinos said “no way.”

“I’m riding this to the bitter end,” he said. “I believe in sticking with something until we’ve squeezed every drop out of it.”

That said, the rather dramatic upcoming fourth season finale of the show was written as if, just in case, the show wasn’t renewed.

“If lightening strikes tomorrow,” he said, “I make an effort to make sure the end of every season … is a satisfying story.”

One critic asked if the show was taming down its sex scenes after last season, which he said resembled porn.

“That’s totally unfair,” David Duchovny said.

“I don’t feel like it’s ever gone too far,” Kapinos said. “Porn is people having sex on film. These are people pretending to have sex while naked. I have no regrets about the show at all.”

On Sunday, & Co. pulled in 848,000 viewers at 9 p.m. for its fourth season opener (and 1. 1 million viewers total if you include its repeat). Still no word on Shameless, but the new comedy performed slightly better out of the gate than Californication, so it’s off to a good start.

I love this show. Haven’t watched the Season 4 opener, but will this weekend. Some of the adult content makes my jaw hit the floor, but it’s so hysterical I just have to watch. So glad it will be continuing into a 5th season.

Finding love, falling in love, or maintaining love – all require patience. Don’t rush love whether your searching for it, or if you feel you’ve already found it. Time was invented so everything doesn’t happen all at once.

“I’m riding this to the bitter end,” he said. “I believe in sticking with something until we’ve squeezed every drop out of it.”

Now I see why the writing on this show is so brilliant. Tom Kapinos is hysterical!

I’m going to assume he didn’t actually say “if lightening strikes tomorrow,” any more than he said “if darkening strikes tomorrow.” You guys own dictionaries over there? There are free ones online, you know.

The nudity and sexual activity in this show is always within the context of the story and never gratuitous. In addition, much of it more hilarious than titillating. Absolutely a show that drives me crazy sometimes but never fails to interest me!

My daughter (adult) and I love this show! She texts me when the show is over and we ‘discuss’ it. Always makes me laugh, and it is not porn, that’s ridiculous!

Yay! Yesterday I finally saw it on a huge HD screen and died. David Duchovny needs not leave our TV sets any time soon, and if that critic thinks it’s porn-like, he needs a new porn supplier because he has obviously not watched real freaking porn.

This show is brilliant with amazing characters and writers.

Where’s the petition to get Gillian Anderson on for a guest spot?

Honestly! Or at least Mitch Pileggi.

“Porn is people having sex on film. These are people pretending to have sex while naked.”
