Michael Scott to leave 'Office' early

the-officeImage Credit: Justin Lubin/NBCMichael Scott isn’t even going to make it to the end of his last season on The Office. NBC has confirmed to EW the HitFix.com report that showrunner Paul Lieberstein said that Steve Carell’s imminent departure from the show will take place with four episodes remaining. Amy Ryan’s Holly will — POTENTIAL SPOILER ALERT — say goodbye one or two episodes before Scott’s farewell, so fans hoping those two would walk into the sunset together may be disappointed. Darryl, Dwight, and Andy will spend the season’s last four episodes scrambling for power in Michael’s absence, and several other characters will also be introduced (or re-introduced: Dave Koechner’s Todd Packer). Jim, Lieberstein confirmed, will not be in the hunt to become manager.

Well, that is stupid. They should keep Steve Carell as long as possible. I think this show is going to really go downhill after he leaves…

    • Michael

No kidding… he is the main character; it really will suffer without him.

Steve Carell rocks!!!!! My favorite comedy actor

  • whatevs

Omg. I wasn’t prepared for it to be so soon now. I really hate what’s happened to one of my favorite shows.

  • JC

Good move by NBC. Now they have 4 episodes to decide if this will work or not and although the show deserves a proper send off, it’s possible this could be it OR NBC will only do a half season next year to properly send off a great series for them.

    • GinaBallerina

I read it to mean he is leaving with four episodes left in the season (so, like, March or April), not in the next four episodes.

      • Mike

I believe JC read it the same way. He’s saying that NBC will have 4 episodes at the end of the season to see if the “no Michael Scott” version is going to work. Personally I think the show should end after this year. It’s going to need one hell of a creative rebirth to justify its continued existence.

      • Jenna

Thats what JC said, NBC will have 4 episodes to decide if this works.

    • Ron

My guess is they’ll figure out a way to have it go at least one more season with potentially longer if it works. I don’t see any reason it couldn’t. It might have more of a feel of a spinoff though with the shift in dynamics

Is this because of mutually financial conflicts (I want more, but you won’t give it to me; so, I’m leaving. . .)? Is he leaving at will or being forced to leave? Any genuine insider?

  • Rolo Tomasi

Good. He’s the reason I stopped watching the show. Too over the top stupid. He should have taken advice from Kirk Lazarus:
“Everybody knows you never go full retard”

    • Alan

He’s the reason you stopped watching the show? Michael Scott is the entire reason the show was created in the first place- he’s the main character!!

    • Helen

      @Rolo Tomasi

I agree, he was too ridiculous. It was embarrasing to watch him!

      • Emeri

        but thats the point!, haha

    • Devin

I agree. I really enjoyed watching Jim, Pam, Stanley, and the others. Michael Scott went way over the top and he became unwatchable.

  • Karate Pants

Perfect! Here’s to hoping the writers stepped up their game and write him off well. Despite the show’s recent string of disappointing episodes, he deserves a proper send off.
Even better, end the show at the end of the season.

  • Mollie

And what was the point of bringing Holly back if not to have them end up together?

    • Billy

I’m guessing you never saw the British version…

      • Bob

Erm, did you see the christmas special?

  • Roekest

My vote is for Packer to take over the office. Hilarity would most definitely ensue (and he’ll probably get sued!)

    • tnsmoke

No way, Packer is disgusting and everyone in the office hates him (except Michael). Bring back Andy Buck or hire Will Arnett.

      • Danny

My god no, I will stop watching if Packer takes over. Bring in David Cross to be the new Manager!

  • ST

Unless Michael leaves to go after Holly and that’s why everyone is left scrambling… I still don’t like that he’s leaving the show early but hopefully they write it well (and i think they will).

    • mae

yup i think she’s gonna leave and he’s gonna go after her.

  • Angie

I still say the series should end with Michael Scott leaving and the introduction of their new manager, David Brent.

    • Di

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

    • Billy

This would be a perfect ending. Maybe give Gervais the last 20 minutes of a one hour finale as their manager.

      • jay

If Ricky Gervais is the new replacement, they might as well just end the show. Hollywood has been trying to ram this guy down our throats for the last 2-3 years and it hasn’t worked. He doesn’t play well to American audiences. He just seems so arrogant and elitist. Steve Carell was such a weirdly, down to earth character. He was odd and pathetic, but you could root for him.

      • Bob

Bringing ricky in for the finale would be awesome

  • Mr. Holloway

I like the idea of Michael leaving early, but I would’ve liked it even more if they’d managed to keep it a surprise. (I remember thinking during that otherwise horrible baptism episode that it would’ve been shocking and kinda cool if Michael had gotten on that bus and stayed gone.)

Like JC said though, this is most likely a chance for the people who run the show to see if promoting someone from within (Daryl, Dwight, Andy) works, or if they need to go out and grab someone during the offseason for next year.

Either way, I love Carell and I still can’t shake the feeling that he’s going to end up with Holly somehow and, ESPECIALLY, that the show should end when he’s not on it anymore.

  • Jamie S.

This show was amazing. I watched it faithfully. It will not be the same without Steve at all. HE IS THE SHOW!!!!

  • Rocket75

I tnk he’s going to be taken out by the Scranton Strangler, but thats just me.

    • bethmania

But they caught the Scranton Strangler! Toby was on the jury.

  • erica

I predict at the last episode of the season we will see Holly get off an airplane (I don’t know let’s say seattle) and go to a beautiful farm scenery with a lake and lo and behold there is Michael in what I believe will be a red flannel and they wil be happily reunited. Only thing missing… no twins.

    • Cate

Yes! But he better start growing that beard…
