Why Showtime rejected 'The Kennedys'

Kennedys-Holmes-KinnearImage Credit: Splash News“It wasn’t Showtime.” That’s what Showtime Networks president of entertainment David Nevins told the nation’s TV critics today after watching — and ultimately nixing — the controversial miniseries The Kennedys, the eight-part miniseries-cum-hot potato that was dropped by The History Channel last week.

“I looked seriously at it, and thought it was well acted, well made and very watchable,” Nevins told critics in Pasadena. “What it really came down to was that it didn’t feel Showtime. It didn’t feel like premium cable. I have great respect and love for [Kennedys creator] Joel Surnow. He’s got a great cast. It didn’t fundamentally feel us. My vow coming in was to focus on renewable resources, and series are renewable resources.”

Nevins added that concerns about the miniseries being a so-called hit-job on the Kennedy family didn’t factor in his decision to pass on the project that stars Katie Holmes and Greg Kinnear. “I was hired to be the steward of this brand and bring the brand to the next phase of its existence. I felt it was not Showtime,” he reiterated.

All hope may not be lost for the miniseries. TVline reports that Muse is talking to DirecTV about picking it up.

Everybody knows it’s a Right Wing hit piece. Give it to Faux News.

    • Lila

    • AcaseofGeo

      As opposed to MiSiNformationBC?

  • johnc

The Hollywood is whole bunch of hypocrits. They are not afraid to show a hit piece about George W. Bush but refuse to show one about JFK. This is double standard!!!

    • Chuckie888

Dubya was and is a pig and his administration evil.

JFK has simply been SMEARED to look the same. And the point: to make it look like the Kennedys got what they “deserved”.

I’m glad the HC and Showtime didn’t bite.

Funny how Dubya is a pig and his administration is evil while Obama is the Messiah but continued most of Bush’s policies….

You are unbelievably clueless. Read a book.

      • Mike

How do u know it’s a hit piece the elites won’t let it be aired

    • anamarie

who did a hit piece on Bush? Because a movie is made does not mean its a hit piece. Maybe you need to be informed before opening your less than intelligent mouth.

      • sydney

lighten up anamarie, you jump on lily above, now on these guys about Bush. You can discuss things without being so mean. Its just some posts – calm down!

  • Keith

This whole project has felt smarmy from the start. I have no desire to see it.

  • Ash

Well duh it’s bad, why would they turn down a movie that’s good. I’m certainly not watching this now.

    • Liver

Showtime picked up Twilight. It’s not a measure of if it’s good or not. Hollywood is notoriously left winged, so this won’t get picked up even if it were the best mini series ever created.

  • Mike

What’s the big deal with this series? I probably would have never watched it, now I’m dying to see it

  • mulan

I really want to see it, somebody pleaseeeeeeeeee pick this up

  • Jake

Two words: On Demand! “See the mini-series TOO HOT for Showtime! Order it On Demand.” Sold.

    • orville

That’s its best hope now. It’ll probably make a lot more money that way too.

  • jennie
