Miss Nebraska Teresa Scanlan crowned Miss America

Miss Nebraska Teresa Scanlan was named Miss America during the annual pageant, which aired on ABC on Saturday evening. The 17-year-old showcased a talent for playing piano and spoke about eating disorders. Scanlan plans to attend law school to become a judge and eventually a politician. The other four finalists were Emoly West of Oklahoma, Jacquie Brown of Washington, Jalee Fuselier of Hawaii, and Alyse Eady of Arkansas.

    Epic fail.

  • Bibi

Seriously. I am always surprised to see this still on.

  • Maggie May

    no picture with the write-up??

    • Marianna

I believe she one of a number of generic and interchangable blondes with blinding white teeth.

  • baya

I couldn’t believe how far Arkansas made it, she was horrible. Glad that Nebraska won but I didn’t expect that she would.

    • Joanie

She was horrible? At least she could throw her voice on key, which is more than you can say for any of the rest of the “singers.”

    • brett

Really? She was beautiful. Plus, that red glittery pantsuit she wore during her creepy ventriloquist talent? Awesomeness.

    • Stef

I thought was outstanding! What a cool talent that was. Totally different.

  • Stephanie

Miss America: Teaching girls to badly dye their hair blonde to be considered beautiful. Seriously it gives true blondes a bad name.

  • Lauren

We flipped through in time to see Miss Arkansas sing with puppets. Honestly, I was hoping she would win just so we could say we have a Miss America who is a ventriloquist.

    • heidi

that was scary. I just thought no no no why are you doing this…and now yodelling? what the …

its every cheesy joke people say about pagents, come true. I mean, we just had an article written about a little girl watching a handicapped puppet in Toddlers and Tiaras and the puppet was supposed to be doing her dance so she could follow along…except it was handicapped so it didn’t do the dance routine correctly.

  • cab

People who criticize pageants are just jealous that they themselves could never be in one. If that’s not the case, then why watch it and then feel the need to comment on it.

    • Lisa Simpson

For the pure campiness of it?

    • Marianna

Because they’re a throwback to a misogynistic era whos’ fifteen minutes should have come and gone before Andy Warhol was even a gleam in his father’s eye let alone dream, coin and popularize the phrase.

  • Lds

An American tradition that carries on! 90 years and still going strong! Bravo!

    • heidi

to be fair I watched it all and for teenage girls they were composed, well spoken, friendly to each other (no cattiness to be seen), toned but not anorexic, disciplined, straight A students with high aspirations, and many actually had talent. Kudos to them.

      • Marianna

…which brings everything back around full circle to that archaic bit of Americana – physical beauty. Kudos to them indeed but it would be nice if a young woman didn’t need to bolster her self esteem by being the judged the prettiest girl in class on top of all her other accomplishments.

  • KSG

What’s up with the spellings of the finalists names?

    • Spellcheckchick

Nobody thinks it is cool to spell their name the traditional way anymore – hence emoly, jacquie, etc. Unfortunatly these women have yet to learn it takes more than a different name spelling to make one unique.

      • sam

I think it’s more the parents’ fault than the contestant’s fault.

      • ltchy

We are sold out of BORT license plates. I repeat, we are out of BORT…

    • Presto

The spelling of names has descended into anarchy. “Hi, my name is John. That’s spelled S-t-e-v-e.”

      • Karrah

My name is spelled weird, and I like it that way.

      • @Karrah

That’s nice honey, but It still looks stupid. It just screams.”My mother wants me to have a special nnnaaaammmeeeee!!!!”

      • Amanda

I agree. I’m not saying everyone should have to be a generic Bob or Steve, but if you want your kid to have a unique name, then put in the effort and think of something unique. I completely agree that having a “regular” name with an odd spelling is just saying “My parents wanted me to have a special name”. It looks so stupid.

    • Amber

Maybe the traditional spelling gave Teresa an edge?

  • jake

ummm, i know not many people watch it — but did the headline have to say the winner? couldn’t say — the winner of miss america is or spoiler alert. In general that should be the case

    • Lisa Simpson

I ususally hate spoilers, but seriously, if you didn’t watch it, do you really care who won? Do people really DVR this show to watch later?

  • Agent Smith

This article is worthless without pix.

  • kris

weak. I wanted Arkansas to win just by the pure awesomeness of her talent! a ventriloquist Miss America? yes, please.

  • Chip

Honestly, I thought it was one of the better run Miss America pagents. They brought it up to date, moved it at a nice pace and added a few of their own touches. Well done. Did Like Arkansas for the win though.

    • heidi

I watched and the thing i hate is that a woman said in the comments board (before the pagent aired) “Oh I hope Miss Arkansas Miss theresa Scanlon wins, she won in the pre-talent competition). And I said – it seems like the winner is already decided before the ladies step foot on the stage. And I guess I was right. Why then can’t we see those contests? The show is just a parade of peacocks, it seems, with the judges already deciding the outcome days beforehand.

      • heidi

sorry i mean the commenter said she hoped miss nebraska would win because she won pre-talent

  • JP

A 17-year-old Miss America? Was Miss Teen USA of this year still in the womb?

    • SW

THANK YOU! I figured I was the only one thinking this. She’s still a minor!

  • momof3

The 17 year-old winner wore a wig (which was crooked for much of the show) to cover her short curly hair and is one of 7 home-schooled siblings. She has deferred her admission to creationist-teaching Patrick Henry College (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Henry_College) for a year. Hopefully her year away from her home-schooling roots will help to expand & moderate her ultra-right wing views.
