MTV's 'Skins' reveals strong start

Nope. Nothing inappropriate here (Jason Nocito/MTV)

MTV’s naughty-by-calculated-design drama Skins got off to a strong start on the network, delivering 3.3 million viewers.

Insiders had their fingers crossed for anything above 3 million, so this number comes as a relief. What’s notably absent from MTV’s ratings release, however, is how many watched the special Monday night airing of Jersey Shore that led into Skins. We’ll post that when we get it.

Skins outperformed the series premiere of Hard Times of RJ Berger, which opened to 2.6 million viewers last summer after the MTV Movie Awards.

Ken Tucker’s Skins recap here, where he points out that “Skins is going to have a hard time distinguishing its ground-breaking rude-lewd-shamelessness from all the other rude-lewd-shameless shows on TV right now.”

This show was horrible! I was so bored. MTVSkins = Degressi + Softcore Porn – Good Acting. Why did I waste my time?

So I was watching Jersey Shore (epic episode) then MTVSkins came on. OMG, there were too many things wrong with this show. Hopefully you guys will do a better review of the show than I can.

But I do want to comment on the city choice. Um, why Baltimore? Based on the show, you would think Baltimore was mostly white, but it isn’t. It’s almost 70% black. Where were the black people?

    • ash.

Ohh… MissVampireDiaries you are absolutely spot on with your witty review. That is such a good question to leave the audience ‘where are all the Black people?’ I will attempt to answer that question; although the series may claim that its located in Baltimore it was actually filmed in Canada. I’m not sure where exactly in Canada some say Ontario but I can’t verify that information. I’m also not sure how the demographic of that area fares against Baltimore in terms of the race of the populaces that live there.

It was set to film in Baltimore, but was moved to Toronto instead. Also, they’ve decided to scrap Baltimore as its locale and go for it as being set “in the eastern seaboard”. Not sure why it’s general, but whatevs…

It’s not a “strong start” until we know how Jersey Shore did. If Shore did anything more than 6 million viewers in the special timeslot, this is not good news, especially since the drop-off without the lead-in will be sharp.

    • DW

Jersey Shore did over 7 million last night, but this is still a strong start for a scripted MTV series. None of their shows come close to Jersey Shore levels.

    • James Hibberd

You would think so, but MTV does not expect any other show, particularly scripted, to get anywhere close to Jersey Shore.

Isn’t this a remake of another show?

Its a remake of a british tv show. Theyve tried to keep to the plot as much as possibe and I think this causes issues, British tv is completely different to American tv. We (myself being British) have different cultural influences within the different social spheres, mimicking the British one means that things are lost in translation. Make it your own MTV, otherwise you are doomed to fail. For those of you that can, watch the British version, its brilliant…and we are very proud of it :)

      • hlinnr

I agree Ava Mae, you should be proud of the original Skins – brilliant show!

    • candy b

Its a brittish show. I guess MTV picked it up and americanised it.

  • ES

im expecting that number to drop considerably next week. a lot of people are saying they dont like it. im on the fence. i didnt like it as much as i thought i would, but i will watch 1 more episode to decide if I’ll continue to watch.

  • OriginalOnlyPlz

It was originally a British show and it was amazing. Way to brutually murder a favorite, though not surprising for MTV.

    • Cassie

haha brilliant that is exactly what i was thinking! like its annoying how they said mtv’s drama its like no its e4’s and e4’s was way better even the 3rd & 4th season

  • sunsetsnow81

I was really bored. FF through my DVR on most parts. British version is vastly superior. I won’t be watching again.

  • usa

can’t hollywood come up with orignal ideas anymore?? worse yet, they take all the Brit tv/talk/reality show ideas and make them far far worse. Looking at the sum, it seems the US has way less talented writers, directors and young actors

MissVampireDiaries, Colored people are scarce on both broadcast and cable television. Which is an odd fact.

    • whatevs

      Colored people, really?

      • JLC

Whatevs – My thoughts exactly when I read that post!

  • MDS

I watched for about 10 minutes and was bored out of my mind.

  • Linda

Still trying to understand why MTV would rework this show for America. If they wanted to create an American equivalent then why couldn’t they use entirely new characters? It seems weird that all the characters, except Maxxie, were Americanized. And why was the gay male character changed to a lesbian. That makes no sense at all if they kept all the other characters basically the same as the British version.

  • Skatatonic

This is a remake of the BBC version also called Skins (it’s on Netflix). The BBC show was good. This one… well…

    • Lu

      Channel 4 not BBC

  • Allie

so lame. i thought they were bringing the real skins to mtv.

  • Morgann

Loved it. I’ve seen the original series, and it kind of owns up to the original. Can’t wait to see more (:

  • Charlotte Couch

the british version was waaaay better and they remade it exactly the same as the old version so wat was the pt of making a new show? y couldnt they just air the british version on mtv? duh

    • Sam

the UK version is way better. INFINITELY better. But I guess they’re only gonna have the first few episodes mirror the UK one then they’re gonna do their own thing

      • hlinnr

Like they did with The Office. Good idea, since we can see how well that worked!

  • billium garvis

This show was horrible. All the hype followed by all the letdown. Actors more like posers, this show is as fake as it gets.
