Piers Morgan premiere triples Larry King average

Lorenzo Bevilaqua/CNN

CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight premiere delivered big gains for the news network.

With Oprah Winfrey as his first guest, Morgan was seen by 2.1 million viewers Monday night.

That’s up 219 percent compared to Larry King Live‘s fourth quarter average in the slot, and the show easily beat MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Show (1.1 million viewers).

Still, Morgan was edged out Fox News’ Hannity (2.4 million).

In the cable news key demo of adults 25-54, the results were similar: Hannity (600,000), Morgan (521,000) and Maddow (342,000).

During an interview with EW, Morgan listed some celebrities on his “blacklist”– including Keith Olbermann, Howie Mandel and… Heather Mills? Yup. Check out that interview here.

I like Oprah, but Piers was seriously kissing her butt. What happened to his hard-nosed journalism?

    • Sheila

      Totally agree. It was boring

  • JoeC

We’ll see what happens after the premiere episode. Still, like the guy…..

    • etm

Howard Stern will get him huge ratings, and then you can go from there.

Thought he might be good but he talks too fast and wobbly, interrupts inappropriately, seems pompous and irreverant and like he knows more….I am disappointed. But it took me well over a year to develop even a small liking for Anderson after they let go of Aaron Brown whom I still miss… the whole program just seems useless really. We all know way too much about the roster of guests and yes, I know Oprah has done some good things but TMI and overkill. I wrote her once and got a postcard two years later!!Yikes

Um, yeah, everybody was tuning in to see his new show. Whatever — they were tuning in to see Oprah. This guy is a walking joke of journalism. Ugh….

      Right on!

I didn’t tuned in to watch Oprah. what is there to know about her that I don’t already know. I like his style. Quick pace & makes it more interesting rather than boring. I wish he would have Michael Grimm on his show when Michael releases his official “big one” CD. That would be quite awesome.

I would also like to see him have Michael Grimm on after his EPIC CD is out. It would also be nice to have his grandmother and Lucie on too. It would be inspirational to hear how with good support, hard work, believing in your dream and lots of love a poor kid from Mississippi can become successful. Would be great to hear Michael sing too! Very talented musician, singer and song writer!

I like Piers Morgan enormously and look forward to watching his show regularly. The Oprah interview was ok, but since I feel like I just saw the one she did with Barbara Walters, I wouldn’t have minded a different guest. I HIGHLY look forward to his interview with Howard Stern tonight. Oprah is almost “too nice” for an interview with her to be truly interesting…..but Stern has no such problem…..

  • Sally

I have to admit I wasn’t looking forward to Piers BUT he did a fine job. He actually got some new items out of Oprah. He is only going to get better! Thank God Larry King is gone! He couldn’t read the teleprompter and forgot everything, like the time he interviewed a famous actor and the actor responded “that is the third time you asked me that question”!

  • celine1fan

Thanks to Gayle’s morning show, I remembered to DVR the show! Loved the interview Piers conducted with Oprah!!

  • jake

interstingly the highly promoted clip of her eating mac and cheese after beloved failed didnt appear in the show. I dont really like Piers so dont expect much…time will tell, but i think he’ll great on pples nerves. hes too pompous and full of himself. id idnt really learn anything new of oprah – and he’s not gonna be able to keep all these big name bookings. plus the fact that its taped means he and cnn can edit things and celebs wont always like that

  • Matt

Not sure American gets Piers, what you guys call arrogant over there we call cheeky chappy.

He’s just a cheeky bastard, it’s part of his mannerism and make up, annoying? Most probably, take himself that seriously? No.

    • Fred

Oh, really? So Piers is well liked in Britain? Someone should tell the British population-most seem happy that he’s gone.

  • Roger C.

No one can replace Larry King. CNN sucks now.

  • Linde

I like Piers……hes a no nosense type of a guy who is intelligent

When you interview Oprah all you’re going to get is a butt kissing interview so I accepted that but Piers interrupted too much and asked far too many questions that he then answered. Annoying. And BTW, in America EVERYONE on tv has white teeth. The yellow was really distracting to me.

  • billk

They should have let him keep the buzzer with the big red X from America’s Got Talent. Every time the guest starts responding with the usual BS he could hit the button.

  • Alex

Happy to see that mediocrity and racism do not manipulated US audience. Madonna is the Queen, a pure and authentic woman, Morgan a racist and mediocre.

  • jeremywhooten

Piers Morgan has a repugnant history as first a reporter for and then the editor of three notorious British tabloids. I don’t think he’ll EVER be able to wash the stink off himself–nor should he–from being mentored by Rupert Murdoch and Kelvin Mackenzie, both repulsive yellow journalists. Morgan calls himself a serious journalist, yet he spent over a decade lying, exaggerating and printing salacious rumors about the rich and famous at The Sun (1989–94); News of the World (1994–95); and the Daily Mirror (1995–04). Now he’s trotting himself out as a quality but “dangerous” mainstream interviewer when nothing could be farther from the truth. Buh-bye, Morgan. I’ll watch anything but your contemptuous mug.
