Syfy renews 'Sanctuary' for fourth season

(Carole Segal/Syfy)

Syfy is signing up for a fourth round of Sanctuary.

The network has dispatched a sled to Vancouver to tell the production team to get to work on another 13 episodes this spring.

The green-screen-shot drama will likely return to Syfy this fall.

Now – if they would just change their minds on Caprica and Stargate Universe…..

    • Simon Jester

They might have, if only people had actually WATCHED SGU and Caprica…

      • Ben

Yeah, that could have been a deciding factor.

      • Kiki

I suspect Sanctuary is also cheaper to make. Actors like Robert Carlyle, Lou Diamond Phillips and Ming Na probably don’t come cheap… Plus, it’s a larger cast, and probably more expensive sets.
That said, yay for Sanctuary! I think it’s the little show that could: no one knows about it, no one gives it press, but those of us who watch it, love it!

SGU had issues the first season, but became gripping, intelligent drama in its second season. “Caprica” was brilliant from beginning to end. These shows like “Sanctuary” and “Haven” are just so poorly written, with plot holes and contrivances from start to finish, that I just can’t believe that scifi fans are gravitating to them. We’re back in the days of the 70s, people, where scifi fans had to suffer through crap like “The Man from Atlantis”, “Fantastic Journey”, and “Logan’s Run”!! Come on; demand BETTER!!!!!

      • anne

Agreed! Also, I’m still bitter about the cancellation of Stargate Atlantis to make way for Stargate Universe. Didn’t SGA fare much better in the ratings?

  • j

    my sentiments exactly majamabbabe!.

  • PAT

    YEAH!!!!

  • Cara

Yay! I love Sanctuary. It started a bit shaky the first few eps, but it really found itself, and now I look forward to it more than pretty much any of my other shows. It’s funny, it’s pretty, and if Henry or Tesla is in the scene, even better!

  • harry

    YES!!!!

  • fastball

    “dispatched a SLED to Vancouver”??
    Hmmmm…firstly, no snow in Vancouver.
Secondly, would you have written that “they dispatched a camel to Saudi Arabia”?
Or maybe a “gas-uzzling monster truck, covered in NASCAR stickers and a gun rack in the Confederate flag-covered rear window, driven by a good-old boy with a mullet, drinking a sixpack of Bud” if they went to the States?

    • Ben

You want me to deliver the news?

  • CP

    It’s 40 degrees in Vancouver… why a sled?

  • mrs b

no sled is necessary. Just bring your umbrella.

  • Zayne

    Bring back SGU.

I really enjoy Sanctuary but if you put these side by side and made me choose, it’d be SGU every time.

    • Cara

Oddly, it’s the opposite for me. I like certain things about SGU quite well, but IMHO it’s a mix of Stargate and BsG that doesn’t really work….sort of like Stargate without the heart or humor, or Battlestar without the great character arcs or, you know, decent writing.
But Sanctuary gives me what it promises: color, fun, warmth, and fairly decent stories. :-)

  • Big D

Syfy actually renewed a science fiction show! Yeah! (I would have rather had SGU though).

  • Lisa

    Awesome!

  • green

Most commenters seem to want to trade Sanctuary for SGU but probably don’t realize that Sanctuary is probably heaps cheaper to make. Tiny cast and almost completely green screened.

    • Kiki

Exactly, @green! Besides, folks, it’s not one or the other. If SGU and Caprica and Sanctuary had all been profitable, SyFy would have kept them all. But clearly SGU and Caprica didn’t make enough money to defray their costs and turn a decent profit…and their stars and sets were surely a lot more expensive than Sanctuary! So let’s not automatically turn this into a “I hate your show, you hate mine” thing. If Sanctuary had been cancelled, that would NOT have brought your favorite show back…
