Michael Imperioli on 'Detroit 1-8-7': 'I'm not overly confident' about a second season

Michael-ImperioliImage Credit: Donna Svennevik/ABCFor all you Detroit 1-8-7 fans out there, this news may sting a bit: While pleased as punch with the quality of his show, star Michael Imperioli isn’t feeling so optimistic about a second-season pickup for the ABC cop drama. So far this season, the series is ranked No. 51 among total viewers (7.6 million) and No. 77 among adults 18-49 (1.8 rating/5 share).

“You know, we’ll see. I’m not overly confident about it,” Imperioli tells EW. “I think the show’s good enough. There are a lot of stories to tell. I think it will only get better in the future, but that has to do with a lot of factors that are out of my control.

“I’ve been disappointed that it hasn’t done as well in the numbers,” continues Imperioli, who plays Det. Louis Fitch. “And I think that it’s hard on network television because there’s a lot of competition. You really have to grab people in the time slot and it’s just been a little bit … I don’t think that a lot of people really know that we’re on the air. I think that the people who do know really like it. We do have a lot of loyal fans. Primarily, it’s in the demographic — 18 to 49, whatever. I don’t know how that works that we’re not doing as good. We had some good overall numbers for a while, but you know, these things are hard to predict. They’re out of our hands. We’re doing the best we can do. The work has been really good. So I’m not complaining.”

ABC has already picked up six of its series for next season, including Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, and Castle. What do you think, Imperioli fans? Should the Alphabet net show more patience toward this clever show? – With additional reporting from Sandra Gonzalez

    • Shawn

      Yea they all great

  • tnmama

This show is GREAT! And as usual the networks aren’t looking for QUALITY.

    • Laurie

Clearly as the picked up Grey’s and Private Practice and those shows are so boring now. If ABC doesnt grab it TNT should. It would pair up really well with Southland which is also awesome.

      • kathy

Laurie – you are SOOOOO right!

      • Marc

I third that comment – Detroit 1-8-7 and Southland are two of the most quality shows on TV right now. I’m all for guilty-pleasure TV, but some of the crap that’s on the networks right now, while 1-8-7 is on the brink and Southland had to move to a cable network… it’s embarassing. Hopefully, Michael Imperioli and Regina King will be recognized for their respective shows during the next awards season.

and 4th. Did you see the previous week’s episode? All that Malloy stuff was awesome. The Black Keys song at the end ruled my school.

      • beans

        I agree good pairing

    • Ames

Is it the networks fault or ours (the audience)? I love this show, but when quality shows come out, people need to watch them. I wish ABC would promote it more, definitely. But when networks keep dumbing down their programming, isn’t it more that they’re following us on our intellectual descent?

      • LOL

I think in this case it is the network’s fault. No promotion and crappy lead ins. What a shame. I really enjoy this show.

  • allen Junas

It’s in a bad time slot. It needs to change so it gets more exposure.

  • Karen

I hope ABC picks up this awesome show-it’s as good as NYPD Blue and I think that had a slow start too. Also, a Brothers and Sisters pick up would be a welcome relief!

  • Ctg

I THINK IT’S EVERY BIT AS GOOD AS “HILL STREET BLUES” AND “NYPD BLUE” WERE IN THEIR DAY. THE ACTING AND CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT ARE TERRIFIC. I JUST WISH THAT ABC WOULD HAVE THE PATIENCE TO LET IT GROW OR IF IT WAS ON CABLE TO BEGIN WITH (MAYBE FX). IT’S A GOOD SHOW & I HATE TO SEE IT CANCELED, BUT IN MY HEART I KNOW ABC WON’T BACK IT.

    • terry

I agree. Love Detroit 1 8 7. Let’s give some of these really shows a chance. Instead, they have Batchelor and Batchelorette. Where are your heads???

  • Alicia

I’ve seen “Detroit 1-8-7″ a couple of times and it is good, but it’s on opposite “The Good Wife,” and that is no contest, I’m afraid.

    • Allie

I agree. I’ll watch Detroit 1-8-7 online, but it just doesn’t compare with “The Good Wife.” I was just thinking last night while watching the latter, “I wish all tv shows were this well-written and acted.”

    • kathy

      Ever hear of a DVR???

      • Bhakti

Kathy– FYI…if a show is DVR’d or watched “On Demand”, that does little if nothing to help the suits at the networks make their decidions. It’s ALL about advertising, and every company that spends millions on advertising know that people who DVR fast forward through the commercials. “On Demand” doesn’t even carry the commercials that real-time TV does.
The bottom line is determined by advertising dollars. So, while using the DVR to tape THE GOOD WIFE while DETROIT 1-8-7 is on solves the problem for the viewer who loves both shows, it does little to nothing to help save a show that has little standing in the ratings every week.

    • BP

And Southland. And as much as I like 187, I will always choose Southland.

    • Ann

Good Wife is a good show but so is Detroit 1-8-7. After the all the hoopla about shooting in the Detroit they need to keep this show on the air. Its different and the characters are far more interesting than most shows. One thing that pisses me off is that it didn’t get the press that the other shows got. IMO that hurt the show badly. This is the first time that EW is covering this show since it was announced. It didn’t get alot of promotion on ABC…

  • stu

they blip out the swearing. it’s distracting & the dialog shouldn’t contain it if ABC doesn’t allow it.
Southland (better show) can say the S word but the F word gets blip= stop using the F Southland.

  • Marsha

Please don’t cancel this one. I like it. Watch The Good Wife too, but everyone has DVR, right?

Stupid shows like Raising Hope get renewed but not this? Shame.

    • Jay

Rasing Hope is a comedy, 1-8-7 is not. You cant really compare the two.
That being said, I rather enjoy Raising Hope. It’s no Modern Family, but its entertaining

    • stu

RH is a VERY funny show!

    • Bhakti

Marsha– Please read the reply I left for Kathy above re: DVR.

BTW– I’m with Stu–Raising Hope is classic. Martha Plimpton shines!

  • cjsm

love this show, it is mature and very well written.

  • Jay

Its a great show on ABC, so it will surely be cancelled.

The same guy who decided to cancel Better Off Ted is sharpening his axe

    • swthompson

while you may be right about the cancellation part, it can’t be the same guy because there was a change of command just before the new season started.

  • KM

I’m really enjoying this show and disappointed it’s not doing well in the ratings. Why isn’t there room for a great new cop show while CSI and Law&Order seem to run in a continuous loop and cover all the major US cities.

  • dave j

Its a very well made show. Great actors and great writing. I hope it makes it.

  • Michelle

I love this show – I really hope it gets renewed. The characters are getting really interesting – it deserves time to develop and snag more fans

  • j

I am really enjoying this show. I hope ABC does not cancel it. I like the characters and the stories. I would watch this show over GA and PP. Please ABC, give Detroit 187 a chance!
