'Fringe' makes Friday debut, doesn't drop in ratings!

By some miracle of magic or science, Fox’s Fringe moved to Friday night  and did not go down in the ratings.

The episode — titled “The Firefly” (nicely ironic considering the show’s move to Fox’s infamous Death Slot) — actually improved upon its most recent Thursday performance.

Fringe, which featured Christopher Lloyd as a guest star, delivered 4.9 million viewers and a 1.9 preliminary adults 18-49 rating last night. That’s right in line with its Thursday season average. Remember, Fox’s Kevin Reilly said if the show maintains its Thursday numbers on Friday, he’d renew it, so let’s hope the drama can keep this up. (Ken Tucker’s recap here).

The premiere of Kitchen Nightmares (4.3 million, 1.9) served up a solid lead-in for Fringe, and overall Fox was able to win the night. In fact, this was Fox’s highest-rated Friday with entertainment programs since 2008.

Fox was helped by CBS airing repeats at 9 and 10 p.m., but first the network aired the series finale of Medium, which posted a rather uneventful number (7.8 million, 1.6) for its last episode.

One small step for Fringe, one giant leap for Fringe Lovers.

    • Alli

Well said. This is some excellent news.

Amen. We have a long way to go but one battle is won.

    • g

nice loved the show from the start

    • kathy

    • forrest

Yes! Watched Fringe live and good things happened. A tradition is born for Fringe Fridays!

    • sarah

SO TRUE. iv never loved a show like i love fringe

    • bobbi

I was just going to say amen, but got beaten at the punch. Hurrah for fringe lovers. Keep renewing.

    • Jane

Now to convince Fox to put Human Target on Friday nights too instead of canceling it & I’m totally in for Fox Fridays consisting of Fringe & Human Target!!

  • Anjali

YES!! This is such GOOD news for Fringe fans!!! We just need to keep this level up and aim for higher!!! Way to go fans!!!!!

  • DeliciousStrawberryFlavoredDeath

It’s not a miracle or magic of science. It’s the DEVOTION OF THE SERIES’ FANS. We love the show and we will do what we can to see it succeed. The real test comes next week, when another show with super crazy fandom comes back…

    • elr

I’m in a quandry about which show to watch live. I will definately DVR both of them but there is a 4 year old in my house that sometimes means that I can’t watch either Fringe or Supernatural live.

      • DeliciousStrawberryFlavoredDeath

First of all, please don’t think I’m being condescending when I applaud you for changing your viewing habits when the four year old is present. That’s responsible of you, and it’s awesome. I work with children, and it frustrates me what some people let very small children watch.

Second, a friend of mine is in the same quandry. She chose Fringe because Supernatural seems much more secure in its future.

      • Lisa London

Not to be rude but shouldn’t your four year-old be asleep when Fringe is on?

      • rentagoodbook

        Time zone may determine…

      • Fringefan

I commend you for that as well. I always wait until my daughter is in bed before i watch Fringe. Although I am not completely caught up yet (only season 1 episode 5), I love this show!!!

      • Say Anything

Why are you censoring the world from your children? They will be unprepared in real life. We watch horror movies or scary shows every night from 10 pm to 1am, and my kids are fine.

      • Zturk

Unless you are a Nielsen family watching Fringe Live does not help it it is actually probably a little better if you DVR it.

      • Zakry

Doesn’t matter the time zone, by the time Fringe airs, 4 year olds should be in bed.

    • DS

I think you are referencing Supernatural so thanks for bringing it up … Since obviously the article DIDN’T. The article is so contrived. They want us to think Fringe will be fine but fail to even say that they posted good numbers because, well, the other shows directly against it aired repeats (CSI:NY and Supernatural). I like Fringe and feel like they were hitting a stride of sorts but I love my Supernatural boys. So if that ship sinks then I’ll happily circle the drain with the boys! I’ve loved them longer than Fringe and I am nothing if not loyal to those Winchester boys! I’m a Supernatural fan to the End, regardless of when it comes! Hopefully all the fans come out in full force with me next week when the boys return!! :)

    • Melody

I guess I’m a part of that fandom, and I’m happy to be a part of the Fringe fandom as well. I enjoyed last nights episode and really want to see Christopher Lloyd return sometime. As for next week, I DVR everything so no big deal for me I will just DVR both Fringe and Supernatural.

  • samara

FRINGE is the greatest show on television and I will fight for it with my last breath!

    • Anjali

    • g

      way up there

  • Steven

This is good news! Keep tuning in guys, and Fringe will hopefully be around for several more seasons.

  • Stef

Viva Fringe!!! Let’s keep it up guys!

  • myprettypony

yes! i wish this was on at 8 so I didn’t have to wait an hour to watch it but I made myself do it. fridays are usually netflix days for us.

  • Marion

Woohoo! It’ll be worth it to stay in on Fridays if that means Fringe won’t get canceled.

  • Sarah

To everyone that said we couldn’t do: I TOLD YOU SO. Fringe fans are loyal. And we will keep promoting the show like crazy. I talk to strangers all the time about it and I don’t care if they think I’m weird if it means one more viewer! I have 2 Fringe shirts I wear out, so I’m a walking ad, booyah!

    • Keith

I hate to say this but you should probably wait on the whole “I told you so” thing…until next week when Fringe is actually up against NEW episodes instead of reruns. That’s when the real test will happen and you just might be eating your words then.

      • anonymous

As long as they are Strawwwwberry Flavoured ! Fringe is ready to take the challenge.

      • tipsy

That`s true but this is encouraging and I`m especially happy because last night episode was one of the show`s best, trully incredible emotional piece.

      • DS

Thank you Keith for bringing up the fact that some people could be eating their words. We’ll see what happens when the show airs against NEW episodes! Don’t count your chickens before they hatch people!

I like Fringe a lot right now but I LOVE those Winchesters! So I guess I am forced to choose. Easy choice for me but sad none the less because I really would have liked to keep watching Fringe. But DVRs can only tape so much at one time. :(

      • forrest

from a fan: please watch Fringe live and record Supernatural. Granted, I’m not a Neilsen household, but it couldn’t hurt.

    • BrooklynBrimstone

This is so true about word-of-mouth. I’ve been able to get 2 of my close friends hooked on the show in the last year. It’s may only be a couple extra households to add to the ratings, but still I feel that it’s important to spread the word about such a fantastic show.

      • tipsy

I`m a WOM convert myself. Didn`t catch the show on TV and sporadic episodes didn`t do anything for me. But a co-worker kept drilling me into giving it a shot on DVD, so I watched Season 1 on DVD and after that, i`m not missing a single episode on TV. And I`m getting other people into the show.

    • g

quality show its own true colors

  • JB

Fringe is the absolute best show on TV! I am hoping it continues for many seasons, and we should watch it LIVE to support it in the ratings wars!

  • Alli

Not gonna lie, I did a happy dance when I saw the title of this article.

    • Kate

I did the same thing. Then I started texting all my Fringe friends to tell them the good news too!

  • Orac

Don’t discount the fact that “Supernatural” was also a rerun. I really think the audience for those two shows largely overlap. When that goes back to new episodes next week things will be somewhat different.

    • CJ

And they overlapped last year too. And as I think another poster suggested, SPN lost out to Fringe each Thursday night.

    • Layla

Supernatural’s ratings is at best 2 million viewers with a 1.0 in the demo while Fringe is normally 5.0 million and a 1.7 in the demos, not sure how much of the audience will overlap.

      • Melody

I’m a fan of both, and for that matter everyone I know who loves Fringe also loves Supernatural. I would much prefer these shows were back to back. Someone suggested on a site that CW should by Fringe and air it on Friday nights with Supernatural. That would be the best in my opinion. Honestly, the two shows would work so very well together.

    • g

fan of both i collect both

  • Michael

  • samara

Although Fringe’s competition is coming back next week, this start gives us hope and something to build on. Do not give up the fight.

    • VAS

And the competition won’t be from SPN — but from new episodes from CBS shows.

    • DaveK

God what a great episode! I never miss Fringe. I LOVE THIS SHOW!!! Glad others do too.

    • g

im lucky watch one on the eastern stations then the next on western stations

  • Mike O

Fringe fans are going to stick with the show. I doubt if anybody watching Fringe will want to switch to whatever police procedural CBS is showing.

    • Dicazi

I thought the same thing about Thurs nights, yet I still read people complaining about it being opposite Grey’s Anatomy and CSI. I’ve turned the tv off rather than watch Grey’s, or worse on.

    • AC

Amen to that, the Fringe Family has moved to Fridays.
