Ratings: Tsunami of viewers from football boosts faux tsunami on 'Hawaii Five-0'

Kono-KalakauaImage Credit: Mario Perez/CBSThe AFC Championship Game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Jets on Sunday created a winter wonderland of ratings for CBS:  The network averaged a behemoth audience of 40.9 million viewers from 7 to 11 p.m. on Sunday, and dominated among adults 18-49 (14.4 rating/34 share), according to preliminary ratings. It also led across the board in all demos, including a 41 share among men 25-54. (Seriously, how great were those camera angles?).

Even the fake tsunami on Hawaii Five-o kept footballers glued to the tube. The special edition of the freshman drama that began well after 10 p.m. earned a 5.7/15 in 18-49 and 20.7 million viewers. Each 18-49 ratings point equals 1.3 million. (For more on the episode, click here).

Is it even necessary to mention how everyone else did? Fox’s Animation Domination muddled by with a 2.4/6 in the key demo and 5.3 million viewers. ABC wisely ran repeats of Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters, though there were originals of America’s Funniest Home Videos (1.4/3, 6.4 million) and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (1.9/4, 6.9 million). NBC aired a Dateline (.6/1, 4.5 million), and the movie Sex & the City (.9/2, 3.2 million), which we’ve already seen 278 times on pay TV.

who is the young boy in the Red bikini?

Ours here ran 13 minutes over but i had set it for an extra hour. I quit watching anything on CBS Sunday nights years ago after one too many times missing part of a show during the overruns.

They didn’t end on time with the football game coverage. They started at 10:13. Remarkable that the game got 40 million viewers but impressive that Hawaii Five-O got 20.7 million viewers! I think that this will help their audience for their Monday airings after being up and down between No. 15 and No. 25 so much. Maybe top 10 like NCIS:Los Angeles, The Mentalist and the other CBS dramas.

Will there be a Monday airing since it was already aired on Sunday?

      • John M.

Yes, but it’ll be a rerun.

      • Michelle

        Different episode though.

Last night’s 5-O is what I called “SPOILER”. The episode features that guy from “Avatar” and teen pop sensation Jojo.

If I told you how easy it is to get a job in this recession, you wouldn’t believe me. But the truth is more employers are going online to find people just like you and me who are ready to work at a good job. The only thing that makes sense is to stop wasting time filling out a dozen applications and going from one boring low paying job to another. I found this site that pretty much matches you up with your dream job that is available. I have found it very helpful. Go to GetMeJobNow.com

That was a great idea! The show was great!

I wonder how many viewers NCIS would’ve gotten in that sweet timeslot? 30-35 mil?

    • Sue1

What’s your point? NCIS (a favorite of mine) is a well-established show with consistently high ratings, H 5-0 is a new show still trying to gather an audience.
      Apples and oranges.

Grace Park is awesome. Don’t matter how hokey the show may be…

  • Eric

    OMG, I LOVE Grace Park!!!!
