'Being Human' skins MTV's 'Skins' (so says SyFy!)

being-humanImage Credit: Jill Greenberg/SyfyOh man, this is war: Syfy tried to make hay of the anti-Skins sentiment today by saying its new scripted drama Being Human “skinned” the competition, including week two of the MTV drama.

Monday’s episode of Being Human grew 9 percent over its premiere episode last week in total viewers (to 2.14 million), and another 21% in adults 18-49 (to 1.21 million). More importantly to SyFy, it outperformed the second episode of Skins by a margin of 41 percent in adults 18-49, 182 percent in adults 25-54 and 35 percent in total viewers. (Good job, Syfy — except MTV wants those pimply-faced viewers south of 30, right?)

Speaking of which, the Human episode attracted 575,000 adults ages 18-34 and 614,000 women 18-49 — the network’s best performance in the demo for a SyFy original since Warehouse 13 on July 28, 2009. Being Human continues to represent SyFy’s most successful winter series launch since Battlestar Galactica in January, 2005.

Being Human follows three roommates — a vampire, a ghost, and a werewolf — who attempt to lead normal lives.

    • Q

      It doesn’t suck.

I wish I could give it higher praise, but it’s just been the two introductory episodes and those were nothing extraordinary.

      • Kris

I agree. I feel like it’s a show that could be amazing but it’s just not there yet. Maybe once the series gets going it will pick up.

I actually think the U.S. version is really good and did better with the pilot than the UK. just my opinion.
      I will keep watching…

      • trey

The actual PILOT for the British series sucked. It’s amazing the effect changing one (maybe two, dont remember) actor can have…but the actual show was top notch. American version is good, but its one of those things where i would much rather sci-fi have just played the British version. It’s not one of those shows that was TOO British for American audiences to get it :)

      • lefty

I was really unimpressed with the first episode…probably won’t dvr it from now on.

    • Lois

The original British “Being Human” on BBC America is so much better than this remake.

      • A-K87

What is the American obsession with remaking English TV?

      • Brett

Not to mention Britain’s remaking of American television – Law & Order UK, which is shot from old U.S. Law & Order scripts with a little tweaking for the regional differences.

      • Jackie

@Brett – If I could watch ‘Law & Order UK’, I totally would. It’s good for those of us mourning the loss of the original and NBC’s stupidity in cancelling it. Some of us need a ‘Law & Order’ fix that will just not be fulfilled by any of the spin-offs or cheap imitations (hello, ‘Law & Order: Los Angeles’!).

      • m.

I actually don’t agree. American version is better.

    • Carlos

Why don’t Scfy let being ‘Being Human’ stay on for 2 hours? They show 2 repeats of the show at 10 and 11 p.m. This is ridiculous.

    • Luggages

As American remakes go, it’s pretty good. You should give it a shot.

    • Elwood

It’s got a lot of potential. Right now I think the performances are pretty good, but as long as they keep so close to the original I can’t say I love it – hopefully they will start to move in a different direction soon. The werewolf character is very different from the the British George, so hopefully they take him to different places – there’s no reason he would make all the same choices and do all the same things as George has done. But several of the performances have been very good. I recommend it, but so far I recommend the BBC series on DVD even more.

  • ally

yeah so far mtv’s skins remake has only been disappointing.. being human on syfy on the other hand, i’m starting to like, not as good as the original of course, but i can see myself following it more than skins on mtv

    • Lex

I agree about MTV’s Skins. I just realized how many British shows are currently airing remakes in the US. Why can’t we just enjoy the amazing originals?!

      • Kris

Because a lot of Americans don’t like watching shows that aren’t from North America. They feel like they can’t relate.

    • Joshua

Intervals on the bike this morning. On the rtniaer so used highest gear. Was suppose to play basketball with the support staff (people that watch the students in the classrooms, I teach at a boarding type school) after school today, but no one showed. No S&C today will get that in tomorrow.

  • KFed

I’m surprised Being Human is doing so well. The US version is really dull and I don’t find any of the characters engaging.

    • Jim

I think there are two types of remakes, the shot-for-shot kind (Being Human and Skinned) and the re-imagining kind (The Office). The shot-for-shot ones aren’t for you or fans of the original. They are to bring in new fans. Is this such a bad thing? Not really. We’re all just sci-fi fans. Only some of us don’t care to tune to BBC America.

      • Jim

err… Skins* SyFy’s marketing is working already!

      • DW

Jim, don’t forget that The Office also started with a shot-for-shot remake of the UK pilot. I have a feeling Being Human will branch out into it’s own thing after a few weeks.

      • tvgirl48

I don’t think that’s necessarily true. If a remake is well done, you can enjoy it just as much as the original. On one hand, don’t fix what isn’t broken. But on the other hand, why not have more of a good thing?

      • Lois

Being Human has the same plot, but isn’t a shot-for-shot remake. The British version is better acted, and has more depth to the characters. Too bad that you don’t want to watch BBC America because you are missing some great TV.

      • A-K87

        What Jim says is a summation of Americas ‘consume all’ culture. I’m Anglo-American (and have spent time in both countries) and in my opinion The Office was remade for two reasons;

        1. There weren’t enough Gervais episodes for you greedy Americand who always want more.
        2. Though the Gervais version posed a great premise, the satire was too subtle for many Americans to comprehend.

Ps. America has produced some of the greatest minds the World has seen but it’s average TV viewers are another story…

      • @A-K87

Ok Mr elitist TV viewer, let’s get it straight that your “reasons” were NOT the reason that the Office was remade for the US. It is a great premise (perhaps the most relatable of the BBC redos I can think of) and we Americans comprehend the satire just fine – the realtabilty break comes in that the slang/humor/references doesn’t translate readily. Let’s be realistic bub, the reason it was remade was that Gervais was just as greedy to license the show for a ton of cash (especially now that it’s in syndication). THAT’S a big reason why alot of these shows get remade…

      • A-K87

        @ @AK-87
You’re 100% right that Gervais wanted to make lots of money. I apologise for being elitist but we have to face the facts that more explicit and more escapist television rules King in North America over more thought provoking and intellectual projects in comparison with other Western nations. This idea is only backed up with the lack of success with many foreign language films in the US which have been hugely succesful in UK, Spain, Germany and France (all of which all speak different languages).

  • Allie

Great numbers for being Human, glad it’s doing well. I love the original but I have to admit I’m enjoying the US one as well. The first ep of skins was really poor but the 2nd one was much better, still not a great show and the original is a lot better but it’s okay. I hope Skins gets better numbers next week

  • Josh

Neither show are good as stand alones and both shows look even worse when compared to their counterparts. I saw Being Human Series 3 episode 1 and it was AMAZING.

    • MojoJojo

Season 3 ep 2 ROCKS!!! I laughed (Chicken on a string!), I was scared (Man vs Werwolve cage fight!)and I cried (Mitchel loves Ann!)

  • walt kovacs

    neither is worth watching

the originals are far superior to the american clones

watched the first 10 minutes of the mtv skins…turned it off

watched 15 minutes of the syfy being human…fell asleep

here’s a novel idea…with all the scripts floating around hollywood…GO BACK TO MAKING CUTTING EDGE SERIES!!!!!

how sad is it that the only truly new and good show was hbo’s boardwalk empire

  • Rack

I liked the second episode of Being Human a little less than the first. The dialogue is a bit of a drain.

    • ks

Glad I am not the only one, seems they wanted to hurry up with charecter development and then just let it hang there.

  • Heidi

I thought the BBC’s was great. This one is even better. The subtlety of humor in USA’s offering is wonderful. Will definitely watch this series. It’s worth it.

  • Redvector

There’s tons of original ideas out there with out recycling ideas from the Brits. For example, I just read the first two books of a new series by up and coming writer Larry Correia titled Monster Hunter and the sequal Monster Hunter Vendetta. It’s about a office drone who’s strained relationship with his idiot boss takes a darkly supernatual turn. He barely survives the encounter and winds up being threatened by the feds and with a bizzare job offer. The best way to describe it is a blending of Supernatural, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and The A-Team. With a side of Men in Black. It’s got balls to the wall action, horror, humor and an unlikely hero you can root for. You can find the books at amazon or Booksamillion.com.

    • Brett

Wow. Book spam. And if it’s “original,” why is it a “blending of Supernatural, Buffy….and the A-Team. With a side of Men in Black”?

    • RW

      seriously, that’s just sad.

    • BigBoo

MONSTER HUNTER? – I thought that was a popular video game series. Sounds to me as though Ms Correia is a bit of a copycat too!

  • Lunna

I watched the first episode of Being Human and I liked it. I’m not crazy about it yet, but I’d give it another shot. Actors need to loosen up, though, I found the acting to be a bit stiff.

  • AnonymousPanacea

I’m really surprised the American version has done this well, I’m guessing the majority of viewers aren’t aware of the original, which is far, far superior.

  • nunnya

I liked Being Human, but I give Skins a big fat fail!

  • barb

I was prepared to not like Being Human because the vampire looks kinda like Edward Cullens’charactor in Twilight.I am pleasently surprised to really enjoy it tho,the first 2 episodes anyway. I didn’t see the British version. It reminds me a little like No Ordinary Family but with Vampires,Werewolves, and Ghosts.

    • BigBoo

Hmmmm…I thought the vampire guy looked like “Doomsday” from “Smallville”…. :)

  • jason

Yeah I watched..but it has been quite boring so far..Hope it picks up or see-yaa

  • Kelly

I will stick with the British version of Being Human, I find it more interesting and entertaining. Season 3 just started in the UK and the first episode was great!
