'American Idol' ratings strong; 'Map' drops again

American Idol ratings dropped 5 percent from last Wednesday — and that’s great news.

Last night’s show marks the highest retention of Idol premiere ratings during Week 2 since season five.

To Fox, this suggests fans are accepting the new judges, and those who tuned into the premiere out of mere curiosity last week are getting sucked into the show.

Idol delivered 25.2 million viewers and a 9.2 preliminary adults 18-49 rating, easily winning the night. Here’s Annie Barrett’s recap, including her take on Chris Medina’s heartbreaking story. As for Fox’s rivals, read on…

ABC and CBS tied for a distant second place. ABC aired repeats, Cougar Town (5.1 million, 2.1), and Off the Map (5.1 million, 1.8) — the medical drama falling 14 percent to mark its lowest-rated telecast yet.

CBS had Live to Dance (4.8 million, 1.1), up 10 percent but still too weak to survive in the wild, followed by Criminal Minds (12.9 million, 3.2), also up 10 percent and a steady Blue Bloods (12 million, 2.0) that won 10 p.m.

NBC aired a series-low Minute to Win It (5 million, 1.4), followed by Chase (4.1 million, 1.2), improving 20 percent, and a repeat. CW had repeats.

      Cynical are we?

    • RT

Will somebody PLEASE make this show go away once and for all?

      • Vince from NYC

No problem bro.. We can kindly ask Mr. Murdoch to cancel his most popular and profitable show of all time. I’m sure he’d be happy to oblige.

      • racefan111

Or here’s an idea – just don’t watch or read about it. It’s a free country.

      • Vince from NYC

True, but then he won’t get to see his whiney post on a message board..

      • ****

RT you know how you can make it go away once and for all? CHANGE THE ****ING CHANNEL!!! If you don’t want to watch something you don’t have to, there are other people in the world with tastes and opinions different than your own. 25 Million of those people to be specific!

Or it won’t. How will you survive?

    • dee

    ‘Map’?

    • Will

Yeah, why mention “Map” in the title and then not even write anything about it in the article.

      • maiv

Don’t know if it’s been edited since you guys read it, but it’s referring to ABC’s “Off the Map.” I tried watching it, and I just can’t get the Grey’s vibe off of it. And it was a bit boring.

I like Off the Map, lots of story possibilities. It has some kinks to work out but its got legs if given a chance. The problem is I thought it was a Thursday show so I assumed it was a repeat. PLUS, it was on at 7pm as well as 10pm and the 7pm WAS a repeat. So I found the 10pm show by accident. New shows need to be given a stable time and place so we can predict when it is on.

      • Bug

I really like Off The Map too.

  • rob

Off the Map had a horrible lead-in. Cougar Town continues to prove how lead-in dependent it is which is sinking Off the Map.

    • Well….

I get what your saying, but that isn’t really fair for last night. Cougar Town was the only new episode of the two hour comedy block. The other three shows leading up to it were all reruns. A lot of viewer, including me, may have assumed Cougar Town would be too.

    • Carrie

Don’t blame the poor ratings for “Off the Map” on its lead-in. That show is AWFUL!

    • Kate

Map is terrible which certainly isn’t Cougar Town’s fault. Not to mention you’re assuming that these two shows have the exact same audience which they don’t.

      • Katja

No kidding. I have grown to absolutely love Cougar Town, but the idea of a melodramatic white-people-save-the-poor-natives romantic doctor drama does not appeal to me in the slightest.

Good to know that people stayed to see Idol the second week. That 5 percent drop from the 1st week is very small this week. I think that Steven Tyler is exciting as one of the new judges with his over the top antics. He’s funny too.

  • Bustin Jieber

It will be interesting to see Idol’s ratings after the new seasons of Survivor and America’s Next Top Model start.

  • PM

I’d say that they’ll stay in the 25 to 26 million average of viewers for this season.

  • Derek

Off teh map is just greys anatomy in the jungle, as much as they would like to tell you it isnt it is…the structure adn pacing are the exact same

  • Damon

    Cougar town wasn’t a repeat.

  • Jenny

I actually really like Off the Map. It just has a terrible lead in. Shonda needs to have it moved to a better slot or pair it w/ Grey’s for a while to get viewers. The Doctors Beyond Borders feel is a good take for a show.

  • Amye

Steven Tyler is hilarious, insightful, witty and quickly becoming the main reason I’m watching AI this season.

    • Vince from NYC

Agreed. My wife said the same thing. She was nervous it would be terrible with Simon’s absence but is actually liking Tyler better. He was a great choice as judge. JLo doesn’t help or hurt. She is a perfect fill-in to replace Paula/Kara though. I actually don’t miss the old panel yet. We’ll see how it goes once we get into the meat and potatoes of the competition. I’m looking forward to it..

    • JS

I agree that Steven Tyler has been a good addition, J-Lo is doing OK, and Randy is, well, still Randy. In my mind, this group is already better than the judges from last year, who all to obviously “mailed it in” for the season.

However, Idol was built on some talent and the performance of Simon/Paula/Randy when they actually cared about what they were doing. the quesiton remains whether this group can build an audience as the previous group of judges did when they actually cared about the show.

It will also be interesting to see how this group does when the real competition starts. Idol is a whole different show then, and they may do better or worse than they are doing during auditions.

  • Bob

I like “Chase” and think the hero is doing a great job. Annie Kiddish is very good as is the rest of the cast. It deserves more viewers but competing against Idol is not easy. I also watched “Off the Map” and think it’s pretty good. I like Martin Henderson as the “hero” doctor with the good looks. And I’m a guy with a girlfriend. She hates when I say that a guy is good looking. But then she doesn’t like when I say “wow that girl is gorgeous!”

    • Dan

Her name is Kelly Giddish, not Annie Kiddish.

  • cindny

Steven Tyler is the reason I too watch the show. Agree with Amye. Some of you here are just plain idiots. Steven Tyler is a legend rocker. I bet some of you don’t even know the songs that is how stupid you are. You would know them if you heard them. I found Steven to be blunt, very caring man, but very in tune to the music and not afraid to tell people they are not good. His sense of humor adds great value to a stuffy show. I love him. I also loved the back story to this guy. Very touching, in addition, he can also sing too.

  • Zakry

After last week’s trumpeting from EW about the horrific decline in viewership (for a show still pulling 26 million viewers) got so much feedback that its ridiculous to suggest a show this well-watched is somehow in trouble, I see the spin is now, “it only lost 5 million from last week!”

    Interesting…

  • chris c

I love Off The Map. Watch it people its great!

  • That’s Right

AI is better now than it has been in years, but it’s not exactly must-watch TV anymore. Frankly I didn’t even know it was on last night. Reruns of Bones were a lot more interesting.
