CBS fills 'Two and a Half Men' gap, orders more episodes of other comedies

CBS confirmed today that it has ordered two additional episodes of Rules of Engagement to prepare for the possibility that Two and Half Men will have to go on an extended hiatus because of Charlie Sheen’s stint in rehab.

The network may also be close to ordering additional episodes of Mike & Molly, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

It’s unlikely that How I Met Your Mother will have to produce additional episodes. “We’re set to do 24 this year, which is the same as we did last year and it’s a big season, and that’s a lot to do,” executive producer Craig Thomas told EW exclusively. “I don’t think we’d never say no to doing a couple of extra episodes if that were to be helpful because we love making the show. We would probably make it work. It’s just speculation at this point. I haven’t heard anything about that. It’s certainly possible. It’s great to have a big order like 24. Sometimes it’s 22, but it’s nice to be doing 24 episodes. It’s good in light of the stories we’re telling. It feels like it’s going to take that many to sort of finish the story of this season.”

Meanwhile, some wild reports have surfaced that not only allege that Sheen will receive a cash bonus for completing a rehab program, but that he’s undergoing treatment from the comfort of his own home. A key source debunked the payoff rumor, while Sheen’s spokesman had only this to say about his client’s treatment: “In compliance with the national health privacy laws (HIPPA), no further information relating to Charlie Sheen’s health or his rehab experience will be released without his written permission. I can say that all of us who know Charlie care about him very much. We will support him in any we can in this journey, beginning by respecting his privacy.”

TMZ reported that Sheen’s treatment could take three months. (Additional reporting by Sandra Gonzalez)

the headline had me hopeful of an order for more big bang theory episodes.

That OR BRING BACK “The New Adventures of Old Christine”. PLEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAASSSSE. I do realize that wine bottle cracked a long time ago, and everyone has moved on but, “Rules” is just mildly amusing filler. Very mildly amusing. Its “OK” (I just don’t buy David Spade as the irresistable ladies’ man of the group).

AcaseofGeo – my thought exactly! Bring back The New Adventures of Old Christine!

Or at the very least, put Big Bang Theory back on Monday nights…..

I didn’t watch all the shows because I lack the time but what I did see was alawys very good.So if I had to take a guess I would say you’re no longer making someone else’s show grow, no, from now on you will have your own company and show.I would like to know what Jason has to say about you leaving because he likes to talk about all the good things at Mahalo but bloggers need to talk about the bad things as well (and how to overcome them), otherwise the readers get the idea it’s all one big promo show.

They could always do one or two episodes of 2½ men without Charlie Sheen. I’m not saying they should make a habit of it, but many shows have done occasional episodes without their star. Frasier did it, Perry Mason did it, Bob Newhart show did it. You just come up with a plot featuring one of the other characters, plus a plausible reason for Charlie not being there. They ought to do more featuring Jake and Eldridge in a different setting.

This makes the most sense. Just have a couple episodes that center on Jon Cryer’s character (can’t think of his name), the kid and maybe the mother. Charlie’s character (aka Charlie) could be away or in the next room or in the studio doing a jingle (isn’t that his job???). The writers are creative enough to come up with something and the audience will accept one or two episodes without Sheen (unless there is something in his contract that says he must be featured in each episode).

Boooo Big Bang Theory sucks and isnt funny

    • Andrew

That better be an effin’ BAZINGA!

    • Ed

I’ll take Big Bang Theory over Two And a Half Men anyday! Two and a Half Men is horrible.

      • Truthhurts

lol you realize they’re basically the same exact crap show with slight changes for characters and situation right?

      • LOL

CBS comedies are for people who hate comedy.

      • IMO-

Anyone who says Two and 1/2 Men and TBBT are alike has never seen both shows. Anyone who hates CBS comedies is a jealous NBC-er.

      • vt

        AGREED!!!!!!

    • allan

you clearly dont get the jokes in the big bang theory the thinking mans comedy

  • Andrew

Really? They order more “Rules of Engagement”? While I really like David Puddy (Patrick Warburton), c’mon CBS! I want more of “The Big Bang Theory “or “How I Met Your Mother”!

    • Cici217

Agree. We always avoid the 1/2 hour between HIMYM and 2.5Men. David Spade is just horrible. How does he keep getting acting work.
They might as well just run 2.5Men repeats

  • efrain

I would rather see a high & drunk Charlie Sheen than mike & molly

    • gataroo

Seriously! I would rather watch him sitting on the couch detoxing or eating breakfast that watch Mike and Molly.

  • mystereo

They need more Big Bang Theory episodes. Everything else sucks anyway.

  • Tvaddict

    It’s supposed to be HIPAA.

  • TBag

All of these shows are so bad, just thinking of them makes my brain bleed. Are they all dramas, ‘cos I aint laughing.

    • AcaseofGeo

I think the only comedy on TV right now that is better than Big Bang is Modern Family. I do find Two and a Half Men amusing even if it is raunchy and the acting debatable. Comedy shouldn’t make you think they are “acting” and unfortunately a lot of CBS comedies come across as “actor reads a ‘funny’ line for the sake of a laugh”. How I Met is pretty good at having the actors actully invested in the characters. But certainly CBS is decades from the glory days of the 1950s thru 1970s.

Crap goes out, crap goes in…

  • kyle

I hate Rules I rather have Big Bang

  • oink

i guess CBS really wants to keep BBT on Thursdays…they can surely equal Men’s ratings if moved to Mondays at 10

  • Zeke

Very simple solution here…allow Sheen to film the last 6 episodes of this season to makenit complete and then buy out his contract and retool the show with a new actor and just call it a day with him. He’s hindering the show on all fronts. His publiist is a moron.

    • gataroo

Actually I think his publicist is a genius. How many times has he been in trouble in the past few years? And still America loves him. His publicist deserves a raise.

    • val

i completely agree with you Zeke… Charlie Sheen should not be allowed to hold Two and a Half Men, CBS, and its fans hostage just because he has a drinking problem… re-tooling the show might be a very good idea

  • val

i’d rather see more episodes of Mike&Molly instead of Rules of Engagement…

    • Liz

God yes, at least Mike&Molly is funny.

  • RAYY

ONLY HAVE TO REPLACE THE HALF MAN,SHOULD NOT BE TOO HARD……

  • Woof-woof

Too bad for the crew, out of work due to this loser. His Dad – Martin Sheen – is destroyed by this behavior.

  • Ted

Screw today’s crappy TV shows. Thats why we have syndicated Seinfeld 6 times a day!
