'Damages' casting scoop: Chris Messina joins web of intrigue when show debuts on DirecTV

Chris-Messina_240.jpg Image Credit: Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images The news just keep getting better for fans of Damages, the former FX drama that’ll air on DirecTV’s 101 network this summer. EW has learned exclusively that Chris Messina (Julie & Julia) will play a high school friend of Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne) who was a decorated soldier before being recruited to work for a private security firm in Afghanistan. He’s drawn into a web of intrigue when Ellen sets her sights on his corrupt employer (played by John Goodman). Dylan Baker (Secretariat) has already joined the cast as a shadowy opportunist with ties to the Middle East.

Unlike DirecTV’s arrangement with NBC for Friday Night Lights, Damages will only air on DirecTV.  The 101 network will air two additional seasons of the drama — each consisting of 10 episodes. The network has yet to announce a start date.

Last year, the producers told EW that the budget for Damages will remain the same in season four, as will the content. “DirecTV wants us to do the show that we’ve been doing,” said exec producer Daniel Zelman. “If anything, they want us to push what we’ve been doing even further. They’re encouraging us to be as bold as possible, which is something we strive for anyway. There have been no discussions about altering the show in any fundamental way.” Added exec producer Todd A. Kessler, “What’s exciting for us as creators is that on the 101 Network there are no commercials, so it’ll be an uninterrupted hour. And that lends itself to the type of storytelling we do.”

Love this show but I don’t have DirectTV.

Cool I really like Chris Messina! Can’t wait for Season 4. Now if I can only find someone with DirecTV!

Walk outside. Stroll through your neighborhood. Look up. Seek satellite dishes. There you go. ;-)

When they announced that DirecTV had picked up the show for two more season, I had never been happier to be a DirecTV subscriber. Damages is one of the very best dramas I have ever seen. DirecTV is currently running through all the episodes of the show leading up to season 4, and I’m really enjoying watching it all over again. I’m fairly certain that season 4 is set to premiere in July. The cast is shaping up to be great.

Love Damages can’t for the new season this summer. Chris Messina was terrific in Julie and Julia.

  • Scott Huck

Cool!! Love Chris Messina, he’s a great actor!

John Goodman! How did I miss that news? I haven’t been crazy about this show since the great first season, but S4 is sounding like it could be the best yet.

  • Viv

Wait. Ellen just happens to have an old friend connected to the case? They could sell that in season one when it was revealed that Patty only hired her because of her connection to Katie, but another random link to a case? That’s kind of sloppy for the Damages writers.

He was really good in The Devil.

Will season 4 be available on DVD after the season is over. Can’t change my cable for just 1 show

PEOPLE – this is an unbelieveable show. You can see Seasons 1-2 on Netflix and now Season is for sell on DVD or I went to Amazon and purchased S3 by purchasing by the show for $1.99. Yep, get Netflix set up in minutes and you have S1&2 for free and purchase the third season individually or by the DVD.

I can’t believe that this will no lomger be on FX…don’t have a desire to change to DirectTV…Don’t want a piece of equipment hanging off my house to get one show that my wife and I love since the first session. Oh well, it will be interesting to see what the shares are on such a limiting venue. My guess is viewership will drop due to this change. Can’t see new viewers jumping in now after 3 previous seasons. But I could be wrong.

    • Twinkz

I would’ve never watched this show unless it had started on Direct TV. It’s sooooo good. I’m totally hooked. I think it will pick up new viewers

  • Lynn

OMG… Am so excited to hear that Damages is going to start new episodes. Love his show. Actors are awesome and the writing is extrodinary!!! This is a MUST SEE show…

  • deb

they sabotaged this show from the beginning. It’s a great show that they would only put on in the wee hours of the morning. How stupid. It shouldn’t be directv. It should be abc, nbc, cbs, or fox who pick this show up

  • graeme

Can’t wait for next season. Thank you, DirectTV for saving it.

  • John

Does anyone know if season 4 will be available on I-tunes? I don’t have Direct TV.

  • Laurie

LOVE Damages – it should still be an FX show – it will die on Direct TV as there are not enough viewers. Shame …
