'V' to pull a 'Jericho': Season will end on cliffhanger despite cancellation risk -- EXCLUSIVE

V producers aren’t letting modest ratings hold them back: The upcoming second season finale is going to finish with a major cliffhanger, sources say.

The story decision is crucial as it suggests the producers either have some degree of confidence that the series will land a third season … or some measure of all-in bluster.

“To cliff-hang or not to cliff-hang?” is the angst-ridden serialized TV show writer’s existential question every season. If you don’t provide resolution, you risk a hugely unsatisfying ending should the network kill your show. Yet if you write an ending that wraps up key storylines, you could lose fan interest and storytelling momentum — which makes things tougher if the show does return for another season.

Remember Jericho? Producers famously muscled CBS into renewing the show by ending the first season on a spectacular cliffhanger that rallied fan support. (Thousands of pounds of nuts were involved).

For V, there is a real possibility of leaving fans in a lurch about the fate of the visitors and the resistance. Recent episodes have averaged 5.7 million viewers and a 2.0 rating in adults 18-49 — that’s right on the borderline.

Plus, ABC has a new entertainment president at the helm, Paul Lee, who isn’t personally invested in V and will want to get his own new shows on the air next fall. Ratings for upcoming episodes and the strength of the network’s new projects in development will play a big part of the decision process, with insiders saying the network’s V verdict will likely go down to the wire in May.

(But since I don’t want to be complete wuss about this … if I had to bet on the show’s fate right here, right now … I’d bet V comes back).

As for what the final episodes are about, well, I’ll only hint that Laura Vandervoot’s visitor Lisa plays a key role…

Same thing will happen with The Event. And it should be obvious that NBC cancels this piece of crap in May. I don’t care about V either, don’t really like what the series has become.

    • zack

Cancel V already. It failed to live up to its hype. The Event also.

      • Trixie

        Thank you!
All I could say when I read this article.
Please, put this show to bed, it’s done.

    • Barry

The piece of crap that NBC NEEDS to cancel is “Chuck”.

      • sparkles

        You are kidding right?

    • dammmm

I think they should kill off Tyler. And not in any dramatic way either — like, to appease the fanbase, just blithely have him choke on a sandwich or fall and have a concussion and, end of that. Give Tyler the only type of death he deserves — boring.

      • B

Yes, they need to take note from the writers of Lost who listened to fans and killed off Nikki and Paolo. Except they didn’t go the boring choke-on-sandwich route. I like that idea.

      • Ashley

Agreed! Ugh, Tyler is boring and annoyingly STUPID!!

      • CraigJ

`What are you talking about? Nikki and Paolo were only in 1 episode of Lost. They did not listen to fans and have them killed off they were never even on the show except for one episode. How could the fans have caused them to be killed off when they weren’t even on the show to begin with. Get your facts straight especially if you are going to be talking about Lost. You are a dumb head, sorry. ““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““`

      • Dave

CraigJ, are you insane? Nikki and Paolo were introduced in the 2nd or 3rd episode of season 3, and weren’t killed off until much later in the season, probably the 14th or 15th episode. The producers made the decision to kill off their characters because they were so widely despised by the fans. This is pretty common knowledge for any fan of Lost. You’re the one who needs to get your facts straight before you go around calling people dumb for something which you clearly know nothing about.

      • @CraigJ

You’re dumb. Nikki and Paolo were in a handful of episodes of season 3. And because season 3 had a long hiatus, there was a lot of time for the writers to gauge fan reaction to them. Damon Lindelof flat out said that they were killed off because the fans hated them.

      • Coolman

He’s dumb because you were wrong? Cool.

    • Toby

You should sell T-shirts with this tag line, I think there’s a big merakt for that lol.Maybe I’ll order the 5 books set from The Book Depository and read the 1st one until season 2 will air, that way it’s an easier withdrawal between the seasons.

  • Tim Lade

    We are of peace…always.

  • Dave

I’m frustrated. I’d love for there to be another season. V may not be the greatest, but it’s still a really entertaining show. I remember several years ago, Invasion ended with a huge cliffhanger, and then it got canceled. I was extremely annoyed. I really don’t want to feel that way again.
On a different note, I’m glad to hear that Lisa will play a key role in upcoming episodes. She has become one of my favorite characters. And Laura Vandervoort certainly is nice to look at. I’ll just hope that her scenes aren’t with Tyler.

    • adam

Invasion didn’t end with a cliffhanger…. granted, it wasn’t much of an ending, but it DID end.

      • Dave

Huh? Are we talking about the same show? You don’t remember the one girl being shot, and William Fichtner’s character carrying her into the water? Besides that, a bunch of people were being held hostage by the aliens. Seemed like a cliffhanger to me. There was certainly not a definitive ending to the show.

    • forrest

different network, but Flash Forward tied up loose ends with a glimpse of the future while leaving the lead actor in limbo with a cliffhanger. It didn’t survive, of course.

      • forrest

        oops. ABC, same network……

  • Rebecca

I’ve been really enjoying Season 2 of V and think they’ve improved the show and the concept so much!

I’d love it if ABC renewed it for another season!

    • Dave

Agree 100%. The show is much better now than last season. I found myself cursing the broadcast of the SotU speech last week because V wasn’t on.

    • TV_Pete

I agree that Season 2 is much better than Season 1.

    • Delon

      Hear hear.

    • jords

Loving Season 2 thus far. The dynamic between Erica and Lisa is awesome, and I want to see more about Joshua!

    • Ian

agree. Recently, the second season has been taking me by suprise. If I am actually jumping or gasping and enjoying the show then that should mean something. It is getting better than the slow first season. ABC cannot expect a show to keep a following when they show one new episode every few weeks. It couldn’t hold anyone’s attention. Having this season more consecutive is helping me stay tuned. let’s hope for a season 3!!

  • Mac

I hope the cliffhanger is the death of Elizabeth Mitchels kid on the show!

And while the show isnt bad (just dissapointing) i kinda hope that it gets cancelled just so the talented cast (mainly Mitchel) can move onto better projects.

Does this show really have a die-hard fanbase? Everytime i seem to read a comment on the show, its never very positive.

    • Zakry

Don’t let that sway you… people around here LOVE to be negative – most have never even seen the show. V is highly entertaining, may be not the best show on TV, but its finding its voice.

    • TV_Pete

I think even the most ardent of fans tend to believe that Logan Huffman, playing Tyler, is the weakest link on the show.

He is the young Anakin Skywalker of “V”, cast more for his look than his acting ability.

      • Hondo

I don’t really think it’s the young actors fault. I actually think he is pretty good. The writing for this character is pathetic. I can’t see Johnny Depp making Tyler interesting. Tyler seems to be in the script only to make Erica Evans out as some supermom.

      • Larry David

Johnny Depp being Erica Evans actually WOULD make the character more interesting. Just because he’s older than Erica Evans…

  • Jay

I was not a fan of the show when it started, and I missed a few episodes here and there and never really cared too much about it.

But I have to go on records and say that since it has come back from hiatus, its been much improved. I’ve actually put it back on my DVR list (after taking it off last season)

  • Jen E.

Hey, I appreciate them sticking to their guns. Chuck has catered to NBC’s cancellation threats and in doing so, I think the quality of the show went down and now has rushed its expiration date. If we’re left on a cliffhanger, I’ll blame ABC, not V.

  • Jess

This season is definitely better then last year- and I hope it gets another season to grow. It’s the only sci-fi show on ABC!

    • Jay

I guess your ignoring No Ordinary Family??
(I put superpowers into the sci-fi genre… it seems more fitting than fantasy)

  • johnmaylives

I love V! It’s been the only thing keeping me going since LOST ended. It’ll be a huge disappointment if it’s canceled.

    • Jay

Have you checked out Fringe yet? If your a former Lostie, Fringe is your best bet.

      • Zach

Sorry but Fringe is way too gross! They need an X rating on that show for disturbing graphic content LOL.

      • Bounlam

That sucks, they never should have moved to Thursday, there’s too much coietpmtion and they were doing well on Tuesdays before the move. I hope they move it to Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday and the ratings go back up. It will be sad to see another quality Sci Fi show get cancelled (Firefly, Terminator SCC, Dollhouse, etc.) Dennis

    • mesa

Check out Battlestar Galatica (reimagined) if you haven’t already. It was a great space opera. Four amazing seasons.

  • Tony

Unlike even a couple of years ago, I think you can cliffhang a series like this even if it might get cancelled. Why? Because the diehards who really care might follow to another delivery model – Hulu exclusive, DVD movie, serialized (Dr Hoorible anyone?). Might of course being the operative word, but never before quite as possible.

  • Michael

This is how they handled the finale of the first V ongoing series in the 80’s, and that didn’t work out so well. I still wonder if Elizabeth ever made it to the Visitor’s homeworld…

    • adam

Believe it or not, you can get most of your questions answered in comic book form. The first “V” saga was finished in a title put out by Marvel Comics back in the day.

  • Nerwen Aldarion

I love V this year, it is vastly improved over season 1. I will admit that the ratings for V could be better but the good news is that V is doing better than most of ABC’s new drama’s including No Ordinary FAmily and Detroit 1-8-7

  • Walrus

I can’t believe that this is still on the air, nevermind even a hint of a chance for a third season. From the episodes I’ve seen, and the interviews with cast, you get the sense that they all just HATE being on this show – other than the paycheck.
Please, ABC: Put your audience and the talented people on this dead-end show out of our collective misery and pull the trigger.

    • Zakry

To Mac – see this comment. I promise you, this person has never eeen an episode.

  • pirateveronica

I’m loving V this season – the writing and action has been great and it really works as a narrative. Cohesiveness is probably their only sticking point (that and they need to pull a Buffy season 7/8 and get an army together)

I do hope it gets renewed – I look forward to new episodes like nobodies business. And I really like them hanging on a cliff-hanger ending…I wish LOST had. Sometimes its better to leave it that way. And I’d hate for them to wrap it up and then get renewed (cough Babylon 5).

  • eyeheartnyc

Why don’t they just make it a summer series? I think I would like it more if it were on in the summer. I also think the show would greatly improve if they gave Bret Harrison more to do and brought back Alan Tudyk.
