'American Idol' premiere ratings: Biggest drop yet

(Michael Becker, Fox)

Well, it’s not like anybody expected them to go up.

The season premiere of the pivotal 10th season of Fox’s American Idol fell in the ratings compared to last year.

Idol drew 26.2 million viewers, down 13 percent. Among the key adult demo, the show earned a 9.7 adults 18-49 rating, down 18 percent from 2010′s opener. The largest declines were among younger viewers, with teen viewership down 28 percent.

The 18-49 drop represents the lowest-rated premiere for Idol since its 2002 summer debut, and the biggest drop ever for the show between seasons.

Either way, the figures are below Fox’s panic line. Falling is fine, goes the mantra, as long as it’s not too big of a plunge — say, more than 20 percent.

This morning, Fox insiders say they’re relieved, noting reviews have been positive, fans seem to have embraced the new judges and the show went head-to-head with ABC’s Modern Family and doubled its rating — all despite losing Cowell.

The biggest test will come on Idol‘s new night, Thursday, when the reality series will face steeper competition and audiences should give the network a greater sense of whether they’re digging the new judges panel. More analysis and ratings after the jump… READ FULL STORY »

ABC books new reality series from Jerry Bruckheimer

Categories: Deals, Reality TV, Scoop, TV Scoop

Sure, it may share the same title of the 1969 mockumentary, but don’t go looking for Woody Allen’s Virgil Starkwell anywhere: ABC is expected to announce that it will air a new competition show from Jerry Bruckheimer called Take the Money and Run. The show will bow on Thursday, April 14 and air for six weeks through May 19. It is expected to replace Wipeout, which will have completed its winter run.

The unscripted series, which was previously dubbed Catch Me, features teammates competing in an adrenaline-fueled adventure game. Bertram Van Munster, who executive produces The Amazing Race with Bruckheimer, will also serve as an EP on Run.

Yes! Ron Moore's 'grown-up Harry Potter' pilot ordered by NBC

Categories: Television, TV Biz

Battlestar Galactica reboot visionary Ron Moore just took another step forward to bringing a fantasy series to broadcast TV.

NBC just picked up his pilot, which could be described as “Harry Potter for grown-ups.”

The Sony Pictures TV project takes place in world ruled by magic instead of science. The working title is 17th Precinct and it’s basically an ensemble police drama set in the fictional town of Excelsior.

Precinct is not the only ambitious Moore project in the pipeline at NBC. The writer-producer also has The McCulloch, about the men and women of a fictional Coast Guard cutter as they travel around the world (that project, we’re told, is still kicking despite the Precinct pickup…).  See our 2011-12 development slate for more pilots in contention for next fall.

ABC picks up 'Last Days of Man' comedy pilot

Categories: Television, TV Biz

ABC has picked up multi-camera comedy The Last Days of Man to pilot.

The concept: “Even though the world around him has declared the traditional male an ‘endangered species,’ Tim Fitzgerald is fighting for his manhood in a world that is being increasingly dominated by women.”

That whole “last real man on Earth” stuff is figurative, by the way, not literal. Tim Allen was in talks on this project about making it his TV return vehicle, but it’s unclear if he’s still in the mix. Jack Burditt (30 Rock) wrote the pilot, with 20th Century Fox TV and Lost Marbles producing. See our 2011-12 development slate for more pilots in contention for next fall.

'Bones' spin-off casts Michael Clarke Duncan

Michael-Clarke-DuncanImage Credit: PR PhotosMichael Clarke Duncan has joined the cast of the potential Bones spin-off. According to TVLine, the Oscar nominee (The Green Mile) has landed the role of Leo, partner to Walter Sherman, “the Locator” at the center of the series. (The lead role is still up for grabs.) Last week, Bones exec producer Stephen Nathan confirmed to EW that producers were hoping to shoot the back-door pilot — an April episode of Bones in which Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan (Emily Deschanel) travel to Key West, Fla., where the spin-off would be set, to use the services of the Locator — next month. “There have been a lot of terrific actors who have come in [for the part of Walter Sherman], a lot of people who everybody has liked,” Nathan told EW. “With a character like this, you just have to find the perfect fit. So even if someone is a brilliant actor, somebody you love, it might not quite work. It’s all casting. You want to find people you want to see every single week do one unique character. That’s why when you have Hugh Laurie, who is essentially playing a very unlikable character, you love to see him. And that is a rare, rare quality to find.”

USA will debut two new shows this year, including a legal drama from Bourne trilogy producer Doug Liman.

The network has given series orders to A Legal Mind starring Gabriel Macht (Love and Other Drugs) and Patrick J. Adams (Lost) and Necessary Roughness starring Callie Thorne (Rescue Me).

Legal Mind (Universal Cable Productions) is about a top Manhattan corporate lawyer (Macht) who hires a street-smart college dropout (Adams) to team on legal cases — even though only one of them has a law degree. Mind is created by Aaron Korsh (The Deep End); Gene Klein (Covert Affairs) is producer and Liman is exec producer.

Legal Mind comes from an edgier place than we have in the past,” notes Jeff Wachtel, president of programming at USA. READ FULL STORY »

Michael Imperioli on 'Detroit 1-8-7': 'I'm not overly confident' about a second season

Michael-ImperioliImage Credit: Donna Svennevik/ABCFor all you Detroit 1-8-7 fans out there, this news may sting a bit: While pleased as punch with the quality of his show, star Michael Imperioli isn’t feeling so optimistic about a second-season pickup for the ABC cop drama. So far this season, the series is ranked No. 51 among total viewers (7.6 million) and No. 77 among adults 18-49 (1.8 rating/5 share).

“You know, we’ll see. I’m not overly confident about it,” Imperioli tells EW. “I think the show’s good enough. There are a lot of stories to tell. I think it will only get better in the future, but that has to do with a lot of factors that are out of my control.

“I’ve been disappointed that it hasn’t done as well in the numbers,” continues Imperioli, who plays Det. Louis Fitch. READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol': Casey Abrams' 'I Put a Spell On You' sexiest performance ever?

Categories: Television, TV Biz

Casey-AbramsImage Credit: Michael Becker/FoxAfter Casey Abrams’ screaming, growling rendition of “I Put a Spell on You,” which closed last night’s American Idol, judge Jennifer Lopez told the contestant, “You’re sexy, Casey. You know that?” I was feelin’ it, too, so much that I rewound the performance three times. For me, it was all about the confidence he had onstage. In his mind, there was no question that he was going to sound good, and there was no debate that we were going to enjoy it. He has that Michael Bublé quality, where he’s able to act out the song, but make it feel genuine because he’s in the song for that moment. In the end, I wasn’t fantasizing about being an Abrams groupie, but I was fantasizing about seeing him in an intimate club or theater where I could stand or sit close enough to the stage to feel that intensity and get swept up in it (and catcall the way one does when someone has committed that fully and wails). So yes, totally sexy. In fact, I’d name it one of Idol‘s sexiest performances ever.*

Watch it below. Agree or disagree? READ FULL STORY »
