'Vampire Diaries': Daniel Gillies talks Elijah's turn on and his pick for playing Klaus -- EXCLUSIVE

Daniel-GilliesImage Credit: Quantrell Colbert/The CWAs eager as fans of The Vampire Diaries are to meet Klaus — the oldest, baddest, bloodsucker of them all due to arrive in Mystic Falls by the end of season 2 — the wait has been, and will continue to be, entertaining thanks to Daniel Gillies, who plays Elijah. The fellow Original vampire made a deal with Elena in the December cliffhanger promising to keep her safe as long as she helps him lure out and kill Klaus. We don’t know if Elijah, who’s pretending to author a book on small towns, is a man of his word, but we do know that he will stick around and assimilate when the show returns with new episodes, starting Jan. 27. “Imagine the historical society tea party hosted in his honor,” teases exec producer Julie Plec. While Elijah acquires whatever information he’s seeking, and we begin to learn what his relationship was to Klaus and why it went south, there’s another question to be answered: How will his presence affect Damon? Piers Morgan premiere triples Larry King average

Categories: Television, TV Biz

Lorenzo Bevilaqua/CNN

CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight premiere delivered big gains for the news network.

With Oprah Winfrey as his first guest, Morgan was seen by 2.1 million viewers Monday night.

That’s up 219 percent compared to Larry King Live‘s fourth quarter average in the slot, and the show easily beat MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Show (1.1 million viewers).

Still, Morgan was edged out Fox News’ Hannity (2.4 million). READ FULL STORY »

'Harry's Law' ratings put on trial; 'Cape' slips

Kathy Bates awaits your verdict (Jordin Althaus/NBC)

David E. Kelley’s latest legal drama Harry’s Law got off to a fine start Monday night in the ratings.

“I object!” you say. “Granted, the show drew a healthy 11 million viewers, but it earned a mere 2.1 adults 18-49 rating. How can you say that’s ‘a fine start’?”

Allow me to present some evidence: NBC’s previous show in this time slot, Chase, averaged only a 1.5 rating. Harry’s Law grew from its The Cape (6.2 million, 1.8; recap here) lead-in and ranked in second place at 10 p.m. Plus, it gave NBC its biggest non-Olympics audience in this slot in more than a year. Therefore, given the context (and ratings are all about context), ladies and gentlemen of the EW.com jury, I would say Harry’s Law had a fine start.

“But,” you counter, opening a briefcase and pulling out a ratings chart. “This shows that Harry’s Law was, in fact, NBC’s lowest-rated in-season premiere ever in this time period.”

Watch the 'Fringe' music video 'Echoes' -- EXCLUSIVE

Sound the Klaxons — Fringe returns with new episodes on Friday! And by Klaxons, we do not mean the trademarked vehicular horn or “alerting device” whose distinctive sound, according to Wikipedia, should be depicted in print as “ah-WOOOGA!” (I prefer “ah-ROOOGA!”), but rather the English alternative rock band Klaxons. (Of course, you knew that.) Fox has taken the group’s 2010 single “Echoes” and created a Fringe music video that recaps the season’s Two Olivias parallel world storyline and functions as a ‘shipper ode to the developing Olivia/Peter romance. As we reported last month, Fox is working hard and creatively to not only encourage Fringe fans to follow the series to its new timeslot, but to also grow the show’s audience by going after teens and young adults. Judging from the video’s dark romantic vibe, I’d say Fox is hoping to entice newbies by positioning the cult fave as a sophisticated sci-fi Twilight. Check it out: READ FULL STORY »

'Big Bang Theory' dish: Howard has a choice to make, and Raj's sis comes back to town!

big-bang-theory-castImage Credit: CBSGotta love those nerds on The Big Bang Theory: They were among the first actors to walk the red carpet of the Golden Globes on Sunday, which gave us plenty of time to catch up with CBS’ top-rated comedy. First up: Simon Helberg, who gave us this fun little tease on Howard: “I know that my character is going to have to make the choice between his mother and his girlfriend. That is going to come to a head. Rick Fox is coming on. He’s playing a tall, beautiful ex of Bernadette’s.”

Here’s what Kunal Nayyar had to say about his alter-ego, Raj: READ FULL STORY »

'Curb Your Enthusiasm' teaser: Larry David is King Kong

Unsure if Curb Your Enthusiasm can top last season, but the eighth round is off to a good start with this teaser trailer riffing on King Kong. We know Ricky Gervais will guest star playing himself and that Larry David will spend part of the season in New York City. “Don’t under estimate this season,” says J.B. Smoove in an HBO making-of. “This is the season where the ruckus takes full effect.” Here’s the teaser: READ FULL STORY »

HFPA on Ricky Gervais: 'Outrageous'; Gervais responds with 'everyone took it well'

Categories: Golden Globe Awards

ricky-gervais-host-globesImage Credit: Paul Drinkwater/NBC/NBCU Photo Bank/AP ImagesAmid complaints (or should we say universal cheers?) about Ricky Gervais’ performance at the Golden Globes on Sunday, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association released this statement to EW:  “We loved the show. It was a lot of fun and obviously has a lot of people talking. When you hire a comedian like Ricky Gervais, one expects in your face, sometimes outrageous material. Certainly, in this case, he pushed the envelope and occasionally went too far. The HFPA would never condone some of his personal remarks. Overall, however, the show was among the best we’ve ever had and we were pleased.”

Gervais, who helped the Globes win its timeslot in viewers and the key adult demographics, took no prisoners inside the Beverly Hilton. Even the HFPA wasn’t immune to his zingers, like this one: “I’d like to quash this ridiculous rumor going around that the only reason The Tourist was nominated was so the HFPA could hang out with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. That is rubbish. That is not the only reason. They also accepted bribes.” That line is what presumably prompted the HFPA president to shoot back, “Ricky, next time you want me to help you qualify your movies, go to another guy.”

NBC declined to comment, but Gervais issued his own statement (and took to his blog to discuss the matter as well): READ FULL STORY »

Liam McIntyre is the new Spartacus!

Credit: Vanessa Dano and Tom Donato

He’s Spartacus!

Australian actor Liam McIntyre will take over the role as the fierce Thracian warrior in Starz’ cult hit series.

The decision comes after a lengthy and difficult process to find a new lead on the show after star Andy Whitfield had to depart the series to resume treatment for cancer. Earlier this month, Starz decided to move forward with a second season as the number of contenders for the role narrowed.

“Since no one can really replace Andy, we realized that we should instead find an actor who can truly lead Spartacus forward,” said Starz president and CEO Chris Albrecht in a statement. “It was important to us to have Andy endorse the idea of recasting this part, which he did in the same heroic manner that he’s dealt with his whole ordeal. And that, coupled with our fortune in finding a young actor with the gladiator credentials and the acting ability of Liam, makes it easier for us to keep this hit franchise going.”

The actor, who was recently seen in HBO’s The Pacific, beat out a field of contenders that included Stephen Amell and Aiden Turner. McIntyre also appeared in Aussie series Neighbors and Rush. The Spartacus saga returns on Jan. 21 with the premiere of prequel series Gods of the Arena (trailer here). Season two of Spartacus: Blood and Sand will debut next year.

Ratings: Football gives CBS a huge boost on Sunday; Golden Globes wins timeslot in viewers and demos

Categories: TV Ratings

jane-lynch-globesImage Credit: Paul Drinkwater/NBCRicky Gervais may have been deliciously brutal with his jokes, but it wasn’t enough to put NBC in the winner’s circle last night: A mighty football over-run propelled CBS to a first-place finish in adults 18-49 (5.8 rating/15 share) and viewers (20.3 million), according to early estimates. The results are particularly loosey-goosey given the nature of live programming on CBS and NBC, but it looks like the AFC Divisional Playoffs earned a whopping 13.6/35 in primetime, giving significant boosts to 60 Minutes (4.1/10, 17.2 million), Undercover Boss (3.3/8, 13.2 million) and CSI: Miami (2.3/6, 10.3 million). Each 18-49 ratings point equals 1.3 million.

The Golden Globes gave NBC a second place finish for the night in adults 18-49 and viewers (17  million). The three-hour awards telecast averaged a 5.3 rating in adults 18-49 and 17 million viewers, according to time zone-adjusted results. It won its time period among all the key demographics and in viewers.

FOX aired Animation Domination originals last night and ranked third among adults 18-49. It came in fourth in viewers (5 million). ABC was fourth in the demo (2.1/5) and third in viewers (7.7 million), with Extreme Makeover: Home Edition earning a 2.0/5  and 7.9 million, followed by Desperate Housewives (3.1/8, 10 million), and Brothers & Sisters (2.1/6, 7.2 million).

Golden Globes backstage: Christian Bale swears, Chris Colfer tears up, and David Fincher runs for his life

chris-colferImage Credit: Steve Granitz/WireImage.comThere’s a major difference between the Golden Globes and the Oscars when it comes to reporting backstage. At the Oscars, the press is stationed in a room approximately three Rhode Islands away from the Kodak Theatre. But at the Globes, you’re in a Beverly Hilton ballroom that’s literally next door to the ceremony. This proximity to the celebrities adds a certain amount of excitement to the task at hand. Need to make a stop at the restroom? Oh, there’s Colin Firth strolling by with his Globe in hand. Off to the concierge desk to set up your wireless Internet? Why hello, Brad and Angelina, so nice of you to waltz through the lobby now and remind me of my actual place on the good-looks hierarchy.

And then there’s the press room, where winners are interrogated about their careers, their dresses, their pregnancy fitness routines (Natalie Portman swims), and their ability to evade questions regarding Sarah Palin. (There were two Palin questions, which is two more than there should have been.) Most winners handled the media circus like pros (see Chris Colfer, Annette Bening, and Melissa Leo), while others (namely, Robert De Niro) appeared to be having as much fun as a 5-year-old forced to watch C-SPAN. Thus, I hereby present the 3rd Annual EW Backstage Awards — a collection of the press room’s most flavorful moments. READ FULL STORY »

Ricky Gervais' rudest Golden Globes jokes

golden-globes-gervaisImage Credit: Paul Drinkwater/NBCThis post started as “Ricky Gervais’  Funniest Golden Globes Jokes” but, really, when it comes to Gervais, his lines that rip the Hollywood elite tend to get more people buzzing than the ones that are merely funny. Here are the biggest zingers from the Golden Globes host:

– “Welcome to a night of partying and heavy drinking. Or as Charlie Sheen calls it: breakfast.”

– “I’d like to quash this ridiculous rumor going around that the only reason The Tourist was nominated was so the HFPA could hang out with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. That is rubbish. That is not the only reason. They also accepted bribes.” (That line is what presumably prompted the HFPA president to shoot back, “Ricky, next time you want me to help you qualify your movies, go to another guy.”)

– “Nothing for Sex and the City 2. I was sure the award for best special effects would go to the team that airbrushed that poster.”

More jokes and VIDEO of Gervais’ monologue after the jump…
