Why Showtime rejected 'The Kennedys'

Categories: Cable, Television, TV Biz

Kennedys-Holmes-KinnearImage Credit: Splash News“It wasn’t Showtime.” That’s what Showtime Networks president of entertainment David Nevins told the nation’s TV critics today after watching — and ultimately nixing — the controversial miniseries The Kennedys, the eight-part miniseries-cum-hot potato that was dropped by The History Channel last week.

“I looked seriously at it, and thought it was well acted, well made and very watchable,” Nevins told critics in Pasadena. “What it really came down to was that it didn’t feel Showtime. It didn’t feel like premium cable. I have great respect and love for [Kennedys creator] Joel Surnow. He’s got a great cast. It didn’t fundamentally feel us. My vow coming in was to focus on renewable resources, and series are renewable resources.”

Nevins added that concerns about the miniseries being a so-called hit-job on the Kennedy family didn’t factor in his decision to pass on the project that stars Katie Holmes and Greg Kinnear. ”I was hired to be the steward of this brand and bring the brand to the next phase of its existence. I felt it was not Showtime,” he reiterated.

All hope may not be lost for the miniseries. TVline reports that Muse is talking to DirecTV about picking it up.

Matthew Perry talks about his new sitcom and sharing the screen with a 'Lost' alum

Matthew-Perry-SunshineAfter starring in the short-lived series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Matthew Perry is back on primetime in the new ABC series, Mr. Sunshine, premiering Feb. 9 at 9:30. In the series, which he also wrote and executive produced, Perry plays Ben, the ego-maniacal manager of an entertainment arena called the Sunshine Center. We chatted with the former Friend about his triple-hat gig, the inspiration behind the series, and what it was like to make use out of his Lost obsession.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: You can now add TV writer to your resume! What motivated you to write your own sitcom?
MATTHEW PERRY: I was sitting at home playing a video game for the third year in a row, and I decided I better try to do something. I’ve done a lot of things in show business, but one of the things I hadn’t done was create a TV show. So I wanted to try to challenge myself and see if I could do it, and I think I did it. I wrote the pilot with Alex Barnow and Mark Firek. I hope it’s a way for me to get my sense of humor out there. READ FULL STORY »

Martha Plimpton eyes return to 'The Good Wife' -- EXCLUSIVE

good-wifeImage Credit: John Paul Filo/CBSFox may have just given Raising Hope a second-season pickup but that doesn’t mean that star Martha Plimpton couldn’t moonlight from time to time. To wit: EW just learned exclusively that Plimpton’s in serious talks to reprise her role as the conniving attorney Patti Nyholm on CBS’ The Good Wife. Plimpton played the memorable character in a couple of episodes last season, and the producers have wanted to bring her back ever since.

Fortunately, Plimpton’s schedule on Hope is flexible enough that she can squeeze in a little Wife time sometime this spring, an insider said.

Plimpton’s decision to return to CBS’ top-rated drama underscores how fortunate the producers have been when it comes to attracting appealing guest stars. Executive Producers Michelle and Robert King told the nation’s critics in Pasadena today that they are routinely approached by actors who want to join in on the fun; unfortunately, their casting budget can be stretched only so far. But they do have some pretty provocative folks in mind for future episodes: Robert King said they’d love to get Donald Rumsfeld.

'The Good Wife' creator: 'We can pretty much do it all except say f--. And s--.'

Categories: Scoop, The Good Wife

good-wifeImage Credit: Craig Blankenhorn/CBSThis morning, critics and reporters at the TCA press tour experienced a real treat in the form of a panel about CBS’ The Good Wife, which is actually somewhat of a rarity because the networks tend to use their panel time to pimp out new shows. Hark, a second-season show that the press loves! Yay! (EW’s TV critic, Ken Tucker, for instance, is a huge fan.) Series creators and executive producers Michelle and Robert King appeared on stage with star Julianna Margulies, who plays lead character Alicia Florrick (at left), and answered questions. Among the gems from the session was when Michelle King announced to the room: “We can pretty much do it all except say f—. And s—.” So true! The three talked about a variety of topics from possible future guest stars (rhymes with Ronald Sumsfeld!), when the election storyline will be wrapped up (soon!), and why the show is such as success (“There isn’t one clear villain.”). Here, a round-up of some of the best quotes from the session:

Piers Morgan's six reasons to watch his new CNN show: He'll be unpredictable, have global impact, make Simon Cowell cry

Categories: Television, TV Biz

piers-morganImage Credit: Lorenzo Bevilaqua/CNNPiers Morgan is hardly lacking in confidence, but even he admits to a smidge of anxiousness as he prepares to launch his new CNN interview show Piers Morgan Tonight (Jan. 17), which replaces Larry King Live. “It feels like being a NASA astronaut before lift-off, in that there’s a huge welter of expectation,” notes the 45-year-old Brit, who serves as a judge on America’s Got Talent. “The whole world is literally watching because of the countries the show airs in, and no one’s quite sure how this mission is going to end up. There’s a very good chance it will do very well and I’ll fly to the moon and back, and everyone will be delighted. But of course, we all know from the history of space travel that it occasionally it doesn’t quite work out that way, so that’s where the apprehension comes in.” Before Morgan takes to the air, however, he makes several pledges to you about what to expect from his new series.  READ FULL STORY »

CBS president on Charlie Sheen: 'We have a high level of concern'

charlie-sheenImage Credit: Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagicCBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler told the nation’s TV critics this morning that “we have a high level of concern” about Charlie Sheen and the reported personal problems that he may or may not be wrestling with off-camera, but expressed confidence in his professionalism on the network’s hit show, Two and a Half Men. “I personally thought a lot about this,” said Tassler, choosing her words carefully. “We have a high level of concern. How can we not? Let me speak personally first. On a very basic human level, I am concerned of course. This man is a father, he has children, he has a family.” READ FULL STORY »

Ratings: ABC airs 'Off the Map' pilot -- again!

Mario Perez/ABC

ABC wasn’t sure you properly appreciated the premiere of Off the Map, so on Thursday the network aired the pilot again — this time with a Grey’s Anatomy lead-in.

And Off the Map did nearly the same numbers.

Which isn’t really a bad thing. You expect to get far fewer viewers for a repeat. But after Wednesday’s ratings cluster-freak with the president’s speech potentially messing with Off the Map‘s premiere mojo, it’s hard to say whether last night says something positive or not about the heavily promoted Map.

One thing’s for sure: The show received plenty of additional sampling. If everybody who watched both the premiere and the repeat tunes in for the show’s second episode next week, ABC will be thrilled.  READ FULL STORY »

'Raising Hope' cast's hilarious Golden Globes plea -- EXCLUSIVE NSFW VIDEO

Raising Hope has strong ratings on Fox and earned an early second season renewal, but that doesn’t mean the freshman sitcom didn’t also pine for a Golden Globes nomination.

Hope creator Greg Garcia and the show’s cast created this clever “For Your Consideration” video and sent it to members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association during the nomination period. That the lobbying attempt didn’t quite work out makes this video all the more funny.

Watch this online exclusive video but — fair warning — the profanity is definitely NSFW. READ FULL STORY »
