'Skins' creator on controversy: 'Skins is in fact rather old fashioned'

Categories: Skins, Television, TV Biz

Skins-MTV-creatorImage Credit: MTV; Inset: Martin McNeil/WireImage.comIn a statement released to MTV News, Bryan Elsley — who created the U.K. TV series Skins with his son Jamie Brittain in 2007, as well as the U.S. version of the show currently airing on MTV — addresses the current controversy surrounding Skins‘ depiction of the sex and drug use of teenage kids by actors who are actual teenagers themselves. Elsley calls the show a “rather old fashioned television series,” and adamantly defends its content as “a very serious attempt to get to the roots of young people’s lives. It tries to tell the truth. Sometimes that truth can be a little painful to adults and parents.” The full statement is below:  READ FULL STORY »

'Battlestar' director helming NBC's magic series

Categories: Television, TV Biz

OK, I have to come up with a better way of talking about this show in headlines other than “magic series,” but “Harry Potter for grown-ups” is getting played out and nobody really knows the name 17th Precinct yet.

Anyhoo: Michael Rymer will direct Ron Moore’s NBC pilot 17th Precinct, the crime procedural set in a world where magic exists. Battlestar Galactica fans know Rymer’s name. He directed many of the show’s pivotal episodes, including the first two parts of its miniseries.

'Gods of the Arena' premiere delivers record 'Spartacus' ratings

Jupiter’s c–k!

Any concerns Starz may have had about continuing with the Spartacus franchise are surely going to be erased by this news: Prequel series Gods of the Arena premiered Friday night and delivered 1.1 million viewers for its first airing at 10 p.m. then another 753,000 viewers for its encore at 11 p.m.

That 1.9 million tally is higher than the combined Friday night airings for any episode of Spartacus season one, and is up about 70% from the premiere of Blood and Sand. Given the way the first season’s ratings built over time, there’s a chance these numbers could similarly climb in the coming weeks as more fans realize the show is back.

Regis Philbin replacement scoop: Who will fill his seat?

Categories: Television, TV Biz

Who will fill Regis Philbin’s seat on ABC’s Live! with Regis & Kelly?

Here are 10 names making the industry rounds as potential pairings for Kelly Ripa. Some of these celebrities been previously reported and others are new. At least a couple, we’re told, are non-starters. ABC, unfortunately, has no comment. Here’s what we think:

Ryan Seacrest: You can’t have a major talk show vacancy without his name coming up. He could clearly handle the job. The trick (as is the case with several names below) is working around his existing deals.

Jeff Probst: The Survivor host is a superb interviewer, he has co-hosted the show in the past, and his contract is up this year.

Mario Lopez: Another former Live! co-host. We’re told he’s potentially a popular contender, but that his deal with Extra may hold things up.

Chris Harrison: The Bachelor host is already in the ABC family. If he can handle crazed bachelorettes, surely he can work with sweet Kelly, right? READ FULL STORY »

HFPA says Golden Globes 'show will go on,' regardless of lawsuit

Despite an ongoing lawsuit between the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) — which presents the Golden Globes — and Dick Clark Productions, the HFPA issued a statement today claiming that there will indeed be a televised ceremony in 2012. (Speculation that the telecast would be canceled began after some outlets discovered that HFPA lawyers put together a court filing that said it may not be able to find a new producer and network in time for the Golden Globes next year.) Said the statement: “Regardless of the legal proceedings with … Dick Clark Productions, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will present the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards Show as scheduled in January 2012. The show will go on, with or without DCP.”

In November, the HFPA filed a lawsuit against Dick Clark Productions, claiming the production company signed a signed an agreement with NBC to air the show through 2018 without consulting the HFPA.

Ratings: Tsunami of viewers from football boosts faux tsunami on 'Hawaii Five-0'

Kono-KalakauaImage Credit: Mario Perez/CBSThe AFC Championship Game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Jets on Sunday created a winter wonderland of ratings for CBS:  The network averaged a behemoth audience of 40.9 million viewers from 7 to 11 p.m. on Sunday, and dominated among adults 18-49 (14.4 rating/34 share), according to preliminary ratings. It also led across the board in all demos, including a 41 share among men 25-54. (Seriously, how great were those camera angles?).

Even the fake tsunami on Hawaii Five-o kept footballers glued to the tube. The special edition of the freshman drama that began well after 10 p.m. earned a 5.7/15 in 18-49 and 20.7 million viewers. Each 18-49 ratings point equals 1.3 million. (For more on the episode, click here).

Is it even necessary to mention how everyone else did? Fox’s Animation Domination muddled by with a 2.4/6 in the key demo and 5.3 million viewers. ABC wisely ran repeats of Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters, though there were originals of America’s Funniest Home Videos (1.4/3, 6.4 million) and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (1.9/4, 6.9 million). NBC aired a Dateline (.6/1, 4.5 million), and the movie Sex & the City (.9/2, 3.2 million), which we’ve already seen 278 times on pay TV.

AOL is getting into the late-night game, with Kevin Smith, Adam Carolla, and Kevin Pollak joining forces for a nightly online video series.

All three men already have popular online programs or podcasts: Smith — who has had a busy week at Sundance — has his Smodcast Network, Pollak has Chat Show and there’s The Adam Carolla Show. Now AOL is teaming with those existing shows to create a daily video series.

“The first time I ever went online was via AOL,” Smith says.  “That means I’ve been a paying member for over 15 years — all without knowing I was investing in my own future. I look forward to many battles over what’s considered too risque for their family-oriented service.” READ FULL STORY »

Matthew Weiner on his expired 'Mad Men' contract: 'I am not looking for a new job' -- EXCLUSIVE

mad_men_320.jpg Image Credit: Frank Ockenfels 3/AMC Fans already know that AMC has promised them a fifth season of Mad Men, but will its brilliant creator Matthew Weiner come back, as well? The Emmy-winning scribe told EW exclusively that his new deal has yet to be finalized but he’s “not looking for a new job.”  The show’s future is vague because AMC is still negotiating with both Weiner and Lionsgate, which produces the hit drama starring Jon Hamm.

“I think all of AMC’s decisions about their scheduling and so forth have nothing to do with me, and I don’t have a deal yet,” Weiner told EW, while walking the red carpet for the Producers Guild of America Awards Saturday. READ FULL STORY »

'Fringe' makes Friday debut, doesn't drop in ratings!

By some miracle of magic or science, Fox’s Fringe moved to Friday night  and did not go down in the ratings.

The episode — titled “The Firefly” (nicely ironic considering the show’s move to Fox’s infamous Death Slot) — actually improved upon its most recent Thursday performance.

Fringe, which featured Christopher Lloyd as a guest star, delivered 4.9 million viewers and a 1.9 preliminary adults 18-49 rating last night. That’s right in line with its Thursday season average. Remember, Fox’s Kevin Reilly said if the show maintains its Thursday numbers on Friday, he’d renew it, so let’s hope the drama can keep this up. (Ken Tucker’s recap here). READ FULL STORY »
