EW's 'Glee' photo shoot with Chris Colfer and Darren Criss: Exclusive behind-the-scenes footage!

Categories: EW Exclusive, Glee

glee-criss-colferOn the afternoon of January 9, Glee‘s resident will-they-or-won’t-they gay teen duo Kurt and Blaine, played by Chris Colfer and Darren Criss, descended on a studio in Los Angeles to shoot the cover for EW’s recent Special Report: Gay Teens on TV cover, which is on newsstands now. As you might imagine, the day was nothing but a blast for Colfer and Criss, who posed for a variety of setups reminiscent of high school prom shots, as well as a setup that found Criss playing a ukulele for an admiring Colfer.

The food? Grilled chicken and salmon — and cookies. The wardrobe? Dalton uniforms, of course. The music? Jams totally controlled by Colfer, who launched a playlist that included everything from Ke$ha to Pink to…Glee. That’s right! More than one song from Glee came over the speakers. “I have nothing but embarrassing songs on my iPod,” Colfer told our EW.com cameras during an interview on set, “so they didn’t know what they were getting themselves into!” But forget the music: Both Colfer and Chris spoke to EW.com about how important their characters are to teens, why they’re so fun to play, and lots more. See exclusive footage and interviews from our cover shoot with Colfer and Criss right after the jump!

Categories: Deals, Remakes, TV Biz, TV Pilots

Wonder-WomanImage Credit: DC ComicsThe ol’ girl may fly this fall after all: NBC has picked up the Wonder Woman pilot from David E. Kelley. Ironically, NBC was the final network to pass on bringing back the superhero over a week ago, but that was before the new regime was officially in place in light of the impending Comcast takeover. Robert Greenblatt is now spearheading primetime as chairman. (On Thursday, head of programming Angela Bromstad announced she was leaving).

The pilot’s cost may not be a concern to Greenblatt, the wunderkind who revitalized Showtime with critical faves like Dexter and Weeds. READ FULL STORY »

'Skins': MTV releases racy new teaser, GM places show on 'do not buy' list

Categories: Television

Amid breathless reports about the Parents Television Council calling for an advertiser boycott (thanks for obliging Taco Bell!) and a federal investigation, MTV’s Skins is continuing to push the envelope when it comes to telling racy and realistic stories about high schoolers. To wit: The network released this teaser from the Jan. 24 episode, which focuses on Tea (Sofia Black D’Elia), who is a lesbian struggling with coming out to her family and finding love.

“I would say Tea on the surface is very confident, tough, can hang with the boys kind of chick,” D’Elia told EW exclusively. “At first glance, she’s kind of unrelatable because I don’t know many teenagers that have that air of confidence and her bravado. But underneath it all she’s just as unsure as the rest of us.” She’s the one with the straight hair. Check out the clip below:  READ FULL STORY »

NBC develops musical series from Steven Spielberg

Steven-SpielbergImage Credit: Kevin Winter/Getty ImagesMove over, Glee: NBC announced today that it has ordered a musical drama pilot that’s based on an idea from Steven Spielberg. Dubbed Smash, the project – if picked up to series – will follow a cross section of characters who come together for the “exhilarating ride of putting on a Broadway musical,” NBC says. The pilot script was written and executive produced by playwright Theresa Rebeck, and exec producers include Spielberg, Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, and Craig Zadan and Neil Meron of Hairspray fame. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman will provide original songs for the series.

Talks are in progress to bring aboard Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening) to direct.

Additionally, NBC picked up a single-camera comedy pilot today from Jhoni Marchinko (Will & Grace). It’s called I Hate That I Love You and focuses on a straight couple that introduces two of its lesbian friends to one another – which results in instant attraction and a pregnancy. 'Smallville' casts Blue Beetle -- EXCLUSIVE

Bet you didn’t see this one coming.

As we confirmed for you earlier today, Days of Our Lives actor Eric Martsolf recently booked a gig as Booster Gold on an upcoming episode of Smallville. Now, EW has learned exclusively that Jaren Brandt Bartlett has been cast as Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle in the 17th episode of Smallville, titled “Booster.”

Yeah, we know what you’re thinking, “Who?!” And truth be told, Bartlett has a slim IMDb resume, most recently appearing on episodes of Nickelodeon’s live-action Canadian series The Troop. But as he makes his introduction into the world of DC superheroes in the episode, which will show Beetle’s origin, we predict he won’t be unknown for long.

It also averaged 6.9 million viewers among persons 12 to 34 – up from last week when it lured 6.6 million.

Even better (that is, from MTV’s perspective) is how it trounced American Idol. Jersey Shore was the No. 1 telecast among all primetime shows on Thursday among persons 12-34, beating the Fox show by nearly 1 million.
