The CW’s zombie series just shambled another step closer to getting on the air, along with a project about an ex-angel and a couple cop ‘n’ doc shows.
The network just announced four pilot pickups, including one from the Chuck/Gossip Girl team of Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.
First up is one you’ve heard about already if you’ve been reading your Inside TV blog: Awakening, about “two sisters who come of age and face off against one another amidst the beginning of a zombie uprising.” The others after the jump…
Next is Heavenly, from Supernatural co-exec producer Richard Hatem, about a dedicated young attorney who teams with a former angel to help clients at a legal aid clinic — “she saves clients’ butts while he saves their souls”* Also, the angel has never experienced human feelings, so you can imagine the sort of hijinks that will ensue.
Hart of Dixie is from Schwartz, Savage, Leila Gerstein, and Len Goldstein, and about a “young New York City doctor after she inherits a medical practice in a small Southern town inhabited by an eclectic and eccentric group of character.”
Cooper and Stone, from Life producer Laurie Arent, follows “two smart young female detectives on Chicago’s North Side [who] are best friends, [and] equally adept at discussing fashion, music, pop culture as they are solving homicides.”
CW tends to pick up six drama pilots, so the network may have another two to go. So far the list is free of teen soaps, presumably the network feels well stocked in that regard.
* Yes, really!

I love Josh Scwartz and Gossip Girl, but I don’t know about this idea. I’ll watch, but if it doesn’t pick up fast, I’ll drop it just like I did Hellcats.
Cooper and Stone sounds terrible
Agreed. When does smart translate to talking about fashion and pop culture? Not that I’m above talking about either, but it sounds like they aren’t giving the intellect of their intended audience any credit if they think an overabundance of pop culture references is necessary to appeal to 18-34 year old women.
WTF? Yeah, I’m solving a crime but let’s discuss pop culture together while this person lays dead on the ground! Lame plot what are these people on?
I don’t know…I for one am tired of folks thinking that just because I’m smart, I like doing boring things. I’m currently part of many honors societies in college and all the “opportunities” that get sent to my e-mail deal with business, accounting, government, etc. One of them even offered me the chance of an exciting trip to NY to learn about the Stock Exchange! Fun! /sarcasm
What about “The Secret Circle”? That was the only pilot idea that sound decent.
It’s still in the preliminary talking stage from my understanding. No cast or pilot yet.
What was the pilot idea for this show, I missed it… thanks
None of them sound that good. I’m surprised at the lack of Gossip Girl/90210-esque teen soaps. It seems like every year they order them in spades (Privileged, Melrose Place, TBL, Hellcats…) and they almost never succeed. Maybe they’re learning.
I’m still mourning the loss of Melrose Place and Privileged
Hart of Dizxie sounds very similar to Everwood.
@Kyle, I was thinking the exact same thing. Only, it surely won’t be as intelligent, humorous or hearfelt as Everwood. Few shows have reached the high standard of acting, writing and direction as that show.
more like northern exposure to me.
It sounds like Private Practice with young people, to be honest. The zombie show should be decent enough entertainment, though.
What happened to that show Michelle Trachtenberg was going to be in?
I am wondering the same!!!
These all sound like crap. Just like CW to try to force “sexy young people” in every possible scenario they can…poorly.
Unfortunately, people *keep watching* these shows, so they keep making them.
Once again The CW takes on GIRL POWER..
And the zombie bandwagon begins.
But since this is the CW, we can expect hot zombies with designer (albeit ragged) duds with perfect hair and 6 pack abs, right? I wonder how they will play up the zombie angst….
Craig-
I was thinking the same thing. First it was Vampires (True Blood brought on Vampire Diaries) and now zombies (Walking Dead brings on the new CW show)
So if these get picked up what’s on the current schedule thats going to get dropped??? Smallvile and…
Life Unexpected, and I hear that One Tree Hill isn’t coming back…
LUX should still be on; it’s one of their best shows, and they should have stood by it just as NBC has stood by 30 Rock. OTH has run quite a course but I can’t see it getting cancelled when it pulls some of the better ratings.
Does that mean Raven is dead?
Hope not.
Updated to note that CW usually picks up 6, so there could be a couple more to come….
Agree – Raven sounded interesting to me, but these four just don’t sound like anything I care to watch.
Cool! I just met my real love on a a millionaire dating site RichPassion ℃○M– and we had our first drink about 4 hours after the initial contact. We have just enough in common to get along but just enough differences to make it awesome fun! Ohhh and He is awesomely Rich!!!so i want to share u this nice place!!
These shows sound extremely lame. How has Dawn Ostroff not been fired yet?
Dawn Ostriff has absolutely no idea what shes’s doing. All of these minus the zombie series sounds pointless and useless to the overall feel of the network. Where is the Michellke Tranchenburg series? Or Secret Circle? The Kevin Williamson series? We should all pray she leaves the network. She is honostly a moron.
I’m pretty sure she’s leaving in May or June.
You think the zombie series isn’t pointless? I just could never get into zombies, but maybe I’m alone in this.
Well…this all sounds rather terrible.
