'How I Met Your Mother': Details on Nazanin Boniadi's character. What does her arrival mean for Barney and Robin? -- EXCLUSIVE

Nazanin-Boniadi-HIMYMImage Credit: Eric McCandless/CBS; Tina Gill/PR PhotosCBS announced last week that General Hospital alum Nazanin Boniadi would be coming on board How I Met Your Mother for a multi-episode arc as a character named Sarah — a possible love interested for Barney. That’s about where the details ended. But we went straight to the source — executive producer and co-creator Craig Thomas — to get more on this “interesting new presence in Barney’s life.”

When we meet Sarah (who works with Robin) in Mother’s Feb. 14 episode, titled “Desperation Day,” Thomas says we can look for Barney to deal with a dilemma that is very close to his heart: try to shag or don’t try to shag.

“Barney takes note of this girl, and she catches his attention on Desperation Day as Barney’s ostensibly hitting on all these woman in the bar because he thinks they’re needy and vulnerable,” Thomas explains. “She catches his eye a little bit, and it’s interesting to watch Barney wrestle with ‘Do I jump in, go 100 percent, full-throttle on Desperation Day? Or do I talk to this girl who’s kind of intriguing?’ The whole thing catches Barney by surprise, and it’s always fun to watch Barney Stinson get caught by surprise.”

Also caught by surprise by the news of Boniadi’s addition? Fans of Robin and Barney who had been hoping that a reconciliation was in the works. Some (like me!) were even hoping that the wedding shown in this season’s premiere was that of the former couple. The good news? It still could be.

“The great thing about the show is that we can leave a lot of doors open,” says Thomas. “We don’t like to close doors on this show too much and certainly Barney and Robin is always a fascinating topic for us. I will say is that we would never rule out the possibility of rekindling Barney and Robin somewhere down the road.”

Stay tuned.

Barney and Robin belong together, as they are both AWE-SOME. I’ll be very unhappy if they aren’t together in the end.

    • m.

The episodes with them together were awful….

  • AN

Barney and Robin together would be Lengend – wait for it – ary. :)

    • P

      Fail! it’s

      Legen…I hope you’re not lactose intolerant…dary

  • Scott

I’m positive Robin and Barney will be together in the end. It’s just that while Robin could settle down tomorrow, Barney can’t and hopefully this Sarah character will make Barney realise that when he was with Robin, he had a good thing going on. Well that’s what I hope will happen.

    • BT

Exactly! I completely agree. Barney needs more practice with the whole dating thing. Maybe he can learn some things and realize what he really wants.

  • Asha

I strongly believe that the wedding at the start of the season was Barney and Robin’s. Who else could it be?! Though it seemed that they were at a church and the Barnacle doesn’t strike me as a church kind of guy (nor does Robin for that matter).

    • Kate

I always just assumed the wedding was Ted’s friend Punchy’s. But maybe that’s what they want us to think.

    • sonya

im pretty sure that the church is the same one where james’ dad is the minister, because in the christmas episode they showed barney going there to give a donation. So it would make sense for the wedding to be there.

  • TW

I really hope Barney and Robin do end up together. The wedding at the beginning of this season I don’t think is Barney and Robin. I wonder if it’s Ted’s old friend, Punchy, that is getting married.

    • Jenn

I don’t think it’s Punchy actually. Since Ted meets the mom at the wedding & Punchy’s wedding seems sooner rather than later…?

  • Kate

I was absolutely sure that the wedding was Barney and Robin’s, though there was always the chance that it was just that kid who was Ted’s friend in high school where Ted is the best man – though I doubt the rest of them would have been invited and also, that might have been awhile ago.

  • Churble

I don’t think it would be Punchy’s wedding, why would Marshall be involved in that? Punchy is only Ted’s friend.

  • BT

Well, I don’t think this new woman will have anything to do with the wedding. I’m sure she and Barney will date, but there’s probably two more seasons of the show left, and there’s no way they’re going to put Barney with someone permanently with that much time left. I still think (hope!) that Barney and Robin will end up together when the series ends, whether they’re the ones getting married from the premiere or not.

  • Mandy

Barney and Robin need to be together again in the end, but not until the end.

  • Jason C.

It has to be Punchy or someone else though. Maybe Ted’s lesbian ex is getting married and has him as her best man for her commitment ceremony? Either way, it can’t be Barney and Robin because Marshall would be co-best man and there were no comments about him being in the wedding party.

    • Jason C.

P.S. – Punchy does know the gang from having come up to visit. There’s a very good chance he would invite everyone up.

      • AAR

Invite them, maybe. But they wouldn’t be involved in the wedding, and Marshall, I’m pretty sure, was in a tux/suit matching Ted’s. Also, Punchy’s wedding, I’m 99.99999% sure, will be held in Ohio, so how could Ted meet the Mother there?

      • Jules

yes, but Marshall has a tux… for when they did “Tuxedo night”.. so not necessarily b/c he was in the wedding party.

    • laura

Don’t forget that Robin specifically asked Ted to be her best man someday. Barney would probably have his brother (Wayne Brady) as his best man. Marshall and Lily would still be involved, obviously, which is why those two were the only ones besides Ted shown.

  • Kaite

I always imagine Robin and Barney in the future in a serious, nonmarried, monogamous relationship

  • bruno

barney and robin are the most unbelievable couple in sitcomland. period. legen–wait for it– suckage.

    • kat

      agreed, bruno… agreed

  • Erica

The sole purpose of this girl is obviously to reunite Barney and Robin. When was the last time a show hired a guest star to do anything other than play catalyst? I’m fairly certain that things will get serious between Barney and Sarah, leading Robin to question her feelings for him. Maybe she will pine for Barney in the same way he pined for her before they first got together.

Also: I completely agree with you, Laura, and I hope that it does turn out to be Robin and Barney’s wedding. I just love the idea of Ted really being Robin’s best man. <3

  • michael abbo

barney and robin are good, but isnt the wedding, ”the one where ted meets the mother”, punchys wedding?

  • Josh in NY

I think Barney and Robin will settle down together once he meets his real dad and finds closure.
