No brainer: CBS renews 'NCIS,' re-signs Mark Harmon

No surprise here: CBS has decided to renew the most-watched drama on television for another season.

Coming off last night’s record viewership high of 22.9 million viewers, CBS announced that NCIS will return for a ninth year.

The network has also signed star Mark Harmon for two more years to lead the series.

“It’s simply amazing that a show in its eighth season continues to perform at such an elite level,” says Nina Tassler, president, CBS Entertainment, in a statement. “This is a tribute to the hard work of its talented writers, producers and cast for bringing to life such compelling stories and characters with intrigue and humor. The quality of the storytelling is also evident by the series’ incredibly devoted fan base who we thank for their passion and commitment to NCIS on CBS, in online communities and around the world.”

THEN WHY NO GOLDEN GLOBE OR EMMY NOMS!?!?!?

    • Jason

Because NCIS doesn’t part take in silly popularity contests.

    • Nerwen Aldarion

Because award shows only nominate the same shows year after year after year.

      • ks

        this

      • Mary

I disagree about the same shows year after year after year ! How can they do that, programs change – they come and go . And some even get tanked like Chase just did.

    • cattyfan

Awards go mostly to shows that glorify the bad…not the good. NCIS is about people with morals. If it instead featured a meth maker, a serial killer, or a corrupt business man who sleeps around as the protagonist, maybe it would get an EMMY. But positive role models, good guys winning, a decent writing and acting isn’t enough to get a statue.

      • Mole

So to translate your comment: Easy = no Emmy, Hard = Emmy.

      • Mary

Just curious but, WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT ! !

    • Chloe

Because it’s not THAT good. Sure, NCIS isn’t bad for a procedural, but it’s not exactly the best show ever.

      • BooBoo

I agree , NCIC isn’t the best show I’ve ever seen either is NCIS Los Angeles , but we doe have to watch something don’t we?

    • Truthhurts

Because it’s nothing worth nominating when its the same exact formula evvvvvery single week. It’s good to know the academy that handles that realizes it. Now if all its brain dead fans would too.

      • Anonomus@yahoo

TStart by getting your head out of you’re his is directed to truth hurts – what exactly are you talking about now ? You can start by getting your head out of you’re a>:. . .

      • Anonomus@yahoo

sorry, this is directed truthhurts, I don’t know what you’re talking about , doesn’t seem to be the same show week after week, after week. But I’m glad you noticed something repedeiatory (don’t know if that’s the right spelling) but hopefully you all who bother to read these things will be able to figure it out.

    • Mary

Yaeh, why no noms ! !

  • Ryan

Cause the award shows honor people who are insiders. NCIS is not. Same reason Numb3rs never won

    • ruby

Same reason fringe is never nominated either. Its a pity since its one of the best shows on tv

    • C

too bad numbers was a TERRIBLE show

      • AcaseofGeo

numbers mighta been bad, but Numb3rs was awesome. Also, since the show was only renewed for one year, what are they gonna do with Mark Harmon having a contract for additional year if there is no show to work on? Its numbers might fall and it could be cancelled next year.

      • jules

@AcaseofGeo…it had 22 million viewers last week. It consistently has 17-18+ million every week. Do you really think the ratings are going to fall that much in one year? You have a brain…use it.

      • Kevin M.

They routinely lock actors into multi-year contracts while only renewing the show year-to-year. I’m pretty sure the contract is more “You can’t leave us ’til then!” than “We can’t get rid of you ’til then!”

  • J

because Award shows nominate quality and creative programming, not by-the-numbers procedurals

    • Leithen

The idea that a procedural cannot be quality programming is specious. Homicide: Life on the Streets was a procedural and is one of the highest quality shows ever on TV.

  • Daphne

Mark Harmon is the reason everyone watches NCIS – this really was a no brainer!

  • bethanymae

We all knew it’d happen, but it’s so good to see it.

  • J

I never said ALL procedurals, I said the ones that are a dime a dozen. NCIS,NCIS,CSI,CSI,CSI

    • @J

      Your opinion, not fact.

    • RightOn

No, I’ve seen all those shows and there’s something very unique about NCIS. Is it formulaic, yes. But all shows follow some style or formula that has worked before. There’s nothing really “original” in TV. Lots of quality shows have been like that, but they excel because of the quality of the acting, the unique chemistry of the main characters, and good writing. NCIS manages to keep it fresh most of the time and it’s very refreshing to be able to watch a decent show with the whole family.

  • ann

Even though USA almost killed it by playing it 24/7, it’s one of the best shows on TV. My family’s favorite!

    • A

If USA didn’t overplay it there wouldn’t be as many fans. That’s where I became hooked on it

      • AcaseofGeo

Correct. I could never watch Criminal Minds because of its graphic nature. But my partner caught some of the endless repeats on A & E and ION, and we realized that although it is indeed a gruesome show, there’s a ton of knowlege to learn on there about the psyche, motivations, stressor incidents that trigger unstable people. I’m not saying its pleasant but it is fascinating.

      • bmc9999

That’s exactly how I became hooked too. After watching a couple of episodes in the marathon, I went to Amazon and ordered the entire 1st season and was off and running.

    • Mole

Actually I pretty much exclusively watch NCIS in USA marathon form. Easy way to lose a day, and fun, too!

      • Marie

That’s how I discovered NCIS – after USA started airing it. I’ve never tuned in to CBS until NCIS and that’s thanks to the reruns in USA. And I always like it when NCIS is on at USA.

  • sofia

of course they did. tehy had to! 23 million viewers is more than twice the number of people living in Portugal we are only 10 millions.
i’ve been watching it since season 2, here in Portugal it aired in 2006 at 4am and no one had a clue of what that was. Now, since Daniela Ruah showed up in its’ spin-off, everyone watches. Hypocrits.

  • Sandra

I really do like this show. I have also always like Mark Harmon. I’d watch him in anything. He keeps getting better with age.

  • tracy

All smiles here. I love NCIS. Doe anyone now the verdict on Cote’s contract? It just wouldn’t be the same without all of the starring cast (palmer inclued).

    • john

you do realize they replaced one of their stars in season 3 right?

  • Cee

We love NCIS in our household too! My husband and I even named our dogs after characters–we have a Ziva and a Gibbs :)

  • ks

I like NCIS but let’s get some better writers. I will probably watch but it would be nice to have growth of charecters and better story lines.

  • eliza ann

I’m a huge NCIS fan, but I think what helped with this weeks ratings is the amount of snow people were getting. There was nothing else to do, a lot of places were close and people were told not to drive.

I would have still watched NCIS no matter the weather.

Hope everyone is back next season

  • BJohnson

    Yeah!

  • kathy

Glad to hear this. NCIS and it’s spinoff are two of my favorite shows.
