'Idol' boosts 'Human Target', 'Minute' surprises

The Fox overlords blessed Human Target with an American Idol lead-in Wednesday evening and the action drama perked up, somewhat, thanks to the added attention.

Target (9.3 million viewers, 2.6 preliminary adults 18-49 rating) climbed 24 percent to a season high after a down-slightly Idol (24.8 million, 8.9), though the Target number is still a steep drop from its lead-in. Also, Target was beaten in the 9 p.m. hour by… wait, am I reading this right?

NBC’s two-hour Minute to Win It (6.2 million, 2.4), which tied its series high and climbed to an impressive 3.0 in its second hour (a family got all the way through to the very last challenge, but did not win the million bucks; NBC sighed with relief). At 10 p.m., SVU (8.8 million, 2.9) matched its best number since premiere week and won 10 p.m.

ABC had repeats, Cougar Town (6.6 million, 2.7) was up 27 percent, and Off the Map (5.3 million, 1.8) held steady. CBS aired a flat Live to Dance (4.8 million, 1.0), a repeat, and then Blue Bloods (11.2 million, 1.6), tying its season low. CW had repeats.

I don’t know if the Idol lead-in spot had anything to do with it. Human Target was aired in it’s advertised time-slot for the first time in WEEKS. Those like my mom that tune in every Wednesday at 8 actually found it on instead of promptly turning the tv off again. I have to check the official facebook page to find out if and when it will be on. Fox is killing another great show with inconsistency.

I missed it last night, but caught it on hulu this morning. Just like I caught it by accident Monday (in place of house). Wish they would do a tad better promotion…

    • Shiny

Check it out on Hulu, they have the 5 latests eps on there, I can never find HT on the schedule so I rely on Hulu to catch up.

      • Christie

Shiny: Thanks for the heads-up that “Human Target” is available on Hulu. I see that there are a couple of episodes I know got bumped and I don’t think FOX ever rescheduled them. No surprise that they keep screwing up the schedule but I was dismayed to learn there’s only 13 episodes to this season.

      • Jane

Fox did reschedule them. The 1st Wednesday when it was pre-empted ( presidents speech) it was on that Friday. Both episodes. Then it was another 2 parter the next Wednesday. If you go to the Human Target site at Fox.com you can find all of this. Mondays & Wednesday’s ratings were up a lot & hopefully the season finale next Wednesday will be good ratings as well as this show is on the bubble to be cancelled or renewed. Unfortunately fox hasnt done the best advertising job for this show. If they could show it like a regular season start & keep it in one timeslot it might have a chance. Even if they have to put it on Friday with my other fav show Fringe, that’s better than canceling it altogether

      • Lord Frylock

Dude, Fox ain’t gonna renew. Target only got 30% of Idol’s ratings. That’s one of the worst retention rates in Idol’s history and deep inside the “danger zone” I’ve deduced exists w/ regards to these types of shows…

and what happened to CHASE scheduled at 9pm but bumped by MINUTE TO WIN IT (again…grrrr)…it got moved from Monday but it keeps getting pre-empted by unscheduled programs

  • Bobby’s Robot

It feels like FOX has been burning off episodes of Target. Too bad, it’s an entertaining show.

  • Jay

Human Target is a GREAT show, however I dont think the 14 year old girls carried over from American Idol. It was just finally on at its regularly scheduled time.

  • Kelson

In my opinion Human Target is one of the more watchable shows on TV. Every week the show is both entertaining and engaging for me.

  • rey

i think chris chance fills the jack bauer void. this show is great but as usual fox is doing their best to kill it.

    • IFerreti

Agree! It’s a big void to fill but Chance is doing a fine job so far… which can’t be said for Fox. I don’t understand why they would bother to put money into producing such a great show but not properly air it and give it a chance to shine. That said, I’m glad the ratings are up (ditto for Cougar Town!!).

I do not watch idol. I caught the last guy on w/ the mini piano singing Ray Charles. Not bad. Must have dropped the remote. Stayed put. I had watched all of my DVR shows so I watched Human Target. Never seen it before. It was pretty good. Kind of an ex-military/spy version of Leverage, instead of thieves and con men. Season Finale next week advertised. I will probably check that out or set for DVR.

  • Moorlan

I agree that Fox is doing a ‘Firefly’ on Human Target with the scheduling. One would think that they would learn from past mistakes but I guess they want the money they are spending on HT for 2 or 3 more ‘reality’ shows.

  • MYK

Considering that FOX has been burning off these episodes seemingly since the beginning of the season, it’s amazing that anyone watches at all. Oh, and just in time for the season FINALE next week. Of course, FOX will promptly cancel Human Target next Thursday morning stating that the “expensive to produce” show never found its audience… despite all their efforts [to insure that no one saw it].

Granted Human Target isn’t nearly as good now as it was in the first season. I guess they weren’t getting the numbers in 18-49 males that FOX wanted; which led to tinkering. The show is still fun, but is more about saving one of their own every time out. It was better when it was working with or saving the girl of the week. Not that it matters, I’d be shocked if FOX ordered up another 6-13 episodes for the summer or next season.

    • Mike

I think Human Target was way better in its second season than its first. I enjoyed the first season but I was a million times more engaged this season. Love the new additions to the cast. I thought every episode of the second season was top notch. Hope it comes back for a 3rd !

  • Miss M.

Fox goes through all the trouble of retooling “Human Target” and then basically ignore it to death up until the last two weeks when it’s scheduled after “Idol”. Thanks for slowly killing another great show, Fox.

  • Mike

Cougar Town had some pretty impressive numbers… which is good since its the last episode before the hiatus.

  • kaydevo

Human Target is an entertaining show with interesting characters that I look forward to watching. Fox is doing its best to kill the show with sporadic, guess-when-it’s-on scheduling of a very short season. Predictable Fox behavior, but it makes no sense whatsoever.

  • jmobrien68

Pair Human Target up with Fringe on Friday nights and give it the ‘real’ second season that it deserves. I would be more than willing to accept that the Ms. Pucci thing was nothing more than a bad dream that Winston had while he was kidnapped.!

    • S.

I agree. It is a natural fit to air with Fringe.

  • DebY

I love Human Target. Fox needs to give it more respect, which they did not give to Firefly and as it turned out that was a big mistake.

  • Herb

Fox seems to use both Human Target and Lie To Me as emergency replacements for some of the crap that they originally scheduled for this season. Let’s hope this continued in the future because both shows are enjoyable.

  • JRWolfe

LOVE Human Target and sadly agree that FOX has been killing it.
