'Vampire Diaries' producer lands witchy CW pilot

The CW has just greenlit a pilot that re-teams Kevin Williamson and Vampire Diaries author L.J. Smith for a supernatural drama.

Secret Circle is based on a series of books about a young woman who moves to a new town and discovers that not only is she a witch and part of a secret coven, but she’s also the key that will unlock a centuries-old battle of good versus evil.

(So, it’s not directly related to Williamson/Smith’s Vampire Diaries … different characters … but certainly a potential suitable companion series to the network’s biggest hit … not to confuse further, but there was an literal Vampire Diaries companion series in the works, but that’s been put on hold).

Alloy Entertainment, Warner Bros. Television, CBS Television Studios producing along with exec prods Williamson, writer Andrew Miller, and Elizabeth Craft, Sarah Fain, Leslie Morgenstein, Gina Girolamo.

What do you think of Secret Circle? Too familiar or exactly what you want more of from The CW?

This is incredible. This was one of my favorite series as a kid and it felt so real to me. That said, I hope they don’t mess it up.

    • entwashian

Ha. Well they sure messed up Vampire Diaries.

    • beatriz

I know! I loved this series, LJ Smith is such a talented author and I am very excited to see these books as a tv show, as I was for The Vampire Diaries.

  • Flip

Just don’t cancel Supernatural for this sh!t.

    • Rack

I know right? I’d like a companion for Supernatural, maybe about the Angels War. Plus, it kinda sounds like Charmed 2.0.

Hey…… You will have a great time at __ Bl ackwh it eCu pid ℃○M with many other si’ ngle bla’ck, whit’e gi’rls, men in your city … My frien’ds recommended it to me since its service is pretty prof ession’al and u’seful …. y so happy to hear that it was picked up!

Supernatural has one more season left, max, so get over it and prepare for something new.

      • Tessa

Yeah because you’re buddies with the network execs so you KNOW *insert sarcasm here.* Supernatural is one of the highest rated shows on the CW. It’s in the same league as The Vampire Diaries and Smallville. This new teen romp has to prove itself first before it even dreams of touching Supernatural’s coat.
@Flip tvbythenumbers.com has pegged Supernatural as “certain to be renewed” for a while now. No worries. These new shows are there to fill in the gaps left by LUX’s cancellation and Smallville’s departure.

      • DW

Supernatural will likely be gone after season 7, if not due to ratings than contract issues, etc. Same reason Smallville is ending.

      • Tessa

Again because you can see the future, and know the contracts and minds of the cast and crew to the deepest level of detail, right?

        Right.

I agree with you on the Smallville comparison though. Supernatural will never get cancelled. It will end gracefully like Smallville did. What season that would be I don’t claim to know. I’m not a psychic like you seem to think you are.

    • Nic

      I second that!

Karen: Words can’t convey how much we love your phtoos of our wedding. You are an exceptionally talented photographer and a wonderful person. Our wedding wouldn’t have been the same without you, and we can’t thank you enough for your time and work. You are truly the best.- Lee, Tiff and Ellie

yay so happy to hear that it was picked up!

I was worried they weren’t going to green light this one. So, I’m happy they decided to. The Secret Circle books are LJ Smith’s best and are perfect for a tv series. That said, I hope that Kevin Williamson doesn’t change the characters as much as he did for Vampire Diaries. The main character Cassie better be the same. She’s the perfect relate-able heroine.

  • Herrick

Is it too much to ask for an eventually crossover between SECRET CIRCLE AND VD?

    • Jeb

I think there’s potential, especially since Bonnie in TVD had ancestors from Salem. Maybe Deb will turn out to be a long-lost cousin!

  • Lisa

These were great books. It’ll be interesting to see this on The CW.

  • bruno

i’ve seen this show. it’s called VAMPIRE DIARIES. only with witches….sigh…too much of a good thing is too much of a good thing kev wills.

  • s

I loved this series as a kid and still read them to this day. I cant wait for the show to be on tv. YAY!

  • Naz

Ok, the CW has done great with VD, so there’s potential here, but I’m a little concerned that they might be pressing close to the “too much of a good supernatural thing” with SPN, VD, this show, and the proposed zombie show that I read about last week…

    • Peyton

There’s no such thing as too much of a good supernatural thing.

  • Pam

I loved these books growing up – always thought it was a better story than Vampire Diaries. Hopefully they can do it justice on the small screen.

    • Lori

Me too! The writing for Secret Circle was way better than Vampire Diaries! I am excited to watch it!

  • Casey

…Wow. That description makes the main character sound like a total Mary Sue.

    • WatchesEverything

I bet I’m the only person to understand that reference.

      • Peyton

        I doubt it

      • Lyle Blake Smythers

I got the Mary Sue ref. You are not alone!

    • Tessa

Isn’t that what the heroine of TVD essentially is? Has no flaws, always does good, everyone loves her even those she actively rejects. She’s pretty, strong, smart and all around perfect.
I think it’s telling of the author to have such a lead character, but she’s not the only writer plagued with that so can hardly be blamed.

  • Mikey M

    Another show about witches?

  • PS

I’ll watch it if it makes it through the pilot, so long isn’t opposite CSI, Law&Order, NCSI.

  • Necro

I wish somebody could cancel the CW network.

    • Teagan

Cancel everything but Supernatural! Just have SPNTV and I’d be happy!

    • Flip

Why? What about the people who like their shows?

      • Tessa

Those shows deserve a better network. I’m talking about Smallville and Supernatural.

  • kira

    So Happy!!! ^__^
