Aaron Sorkin to do a little social networking on '30 Rock' -- EXCLUSIVE

aaron-sorkinImage Credit: Jonathan Fickies/Bloomberg/Getty ImagesBefore he goes behind the scenes of a cable news network with his HBO pilot, uber-writer Aaron Sorkin will go behind the scenes of a fictional sketch show on 30 Rock.

EW has learned exclusively that Sorkin — who will find out in two weeks whether his screenplay for The Social Network is deserving of an Oscar — will play himself in an episode that’s expected to air in March or April. As usual, insiders are tight-lipped about the actual plot, so let’s just assume Sorkin’s appearance will feature lots of artful yammering and long, continuous shots through the TGS halls.

Occasionally, Sorkin likes to appear in front of the camera. He had a bit part as an ad executive in The Social Network, along with a brief cameo recently on Entourage. He also performed quick spots in The American President and A Few Good Men, his other movies.

While racking up the awards for penning The Social Network, Sorkin has turned his attention to HBO — the possible home of his next TV show. If greenlit to series, the project (think Sports Night meets Countdown) would mark Sorkin’s return to the politically charged workplace drama series — subject matter that gave NBC one of its longest running hits with Sorkin’s The West Wing.

So, how much Studio 60 bashing is going to happen, do we think?

    • Brian

They have to mention it at least, right? One quick jab?

      • SoulHonky

Isn’t THAT the story here? Not sure how anyone can write a blurb about Sorkin being on 30 Rock and not mention Studio 60.

      • REASON

That is exactly what I was thinking SoulHonky!

      • Tego Livi

Some alluding to it is inevitable–which is probably why he’s doing it now. With that Facebook movie, he’s got a true, widely-seen public success. So he can let some needling of that enormous failure happen.

  • Bill

Is it just him or his Hindenberg sized ego?

    • MCS

I get that feeling hey. He just seems to think he is the best person alive

      • Allie

Well, partly because he is kind of the best person alive. Just saying.

      • caroline

        I’m with Allie!

      • Johnification

Yeah, I’m partly to blame for that. He’s awesome.

      • James D

        He pretty much is awesome

      • sean

It’s not just that he’s an awesome person (which he is), but that he is actually Awesome. He’s the definition.

    • Kevin

Don’t get me wrong because I am a big fan of almost everything he has done but you’re right. I don’t think there is anything that Aaron Sorkin loves more than Aaron Sorkin.

  • Matt Tucker

I’m sure there has to be just a tad of sting about this for Sorkin. After all, his ‘Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip’ was pitted against ’30 Rock’ in their premiere seasons by pretty much everyone, and we see how that turned out.

    • Adam

I’m sure he’s over it by now. If he wasn’t, then I doubt he’d guest star on the show.

    • Brian

At least he’ll soon be able to wipe away the tears with his Oscar.

    • brenda

do you remember the promos for 30 rock with alec baldwin thinking he had agreed to do studio 60 and tina fey corrects him and tells him it’s 30 rock and he cringes? didn’t work out too badly for him! haha!

  • Adam

Ha, kinda funny since Studio 60 and 30 Rock premiered the same year and it seemed like only one of them could survive, which was obviously 30 Rock. I’m sure there’ll be a mention of it on the show.

  • Kevin

Aaron Sorkin and Tina Fey… together? The only way this could possibly be better is if Ricky Gervais randomly showed up, and then the holy trinity of clever geniuses would be complete.
    My head hurts.

    • Green

The trinity of people it is cool for white people to like.

      • B

Actually, it’s become cool these days to hate them and talk about how overrated and unfunny they are.

      • Green

Actually that’s true, I will allow that. Christopher Nolan has probably replaced this trio as the new cool kid on the block.

      • Johnification

I agree with B, it’s way trendier online to bash Fey and Sorkin. So now it’s, like, counterculture to still like them. I’m down with that.

      • sean

Be careful Green, a lot of people have been backlashing on Inception, so Christopher Nolan could be the NEW new person to hate (at least until Batman 3 comes out…)

      • Dave

Agree with Sean. It’s slowly becoming cool to talk about how overrated Chris Nolan is.

  • jason

This guy is a self absorbed ass..However, he is an insane writer..so keep doing your thang

  • rebecca

He is a brilliant writer. West Wing post Sorkin was a yawn fest. Not the plots per se but the lack of depth and the slower pace made it almost indistinguishable from what TV programs tend to churn out. His writing was so rich and multi-textured it was a pleasure to watch the episodes more than once as it was easy to miss things the first time around. I had no interest in Studio 60 but the writing was so good it didn’t matter. A writer who can interest you in a topic intrinsically uninteresting to you(i.e., behind the scenes of an SNL-inspired production interests me not at all but it was compelling thanks to his writing skills. I know nothing about him, but if he does in fact have an oversized ego, at least he has the goods to back it up.

  • Cat

Can’t wait!! Mammoth-sized ego or not, NO ONE can write like he can.

  • Teresa

it’s very odd… 30 Rock and Studio 60 started the same year, isn´t it?

    • brenda

      why is that odd?

  • kim in kentucky

Nobody writes dialogue like he does – can’t wait for the HBO show!

    • JimmieG

Hey kim…I’m in Frankfort. Can you believe this is the capital city of Kentucky?

  • Mae

Now that tracy is an Oscar winner, I hope that Sorkin is here to recruit him for a movie.

    • Tracy

Lemon told me some crazy writer person was comin’ to my show. Someone call Jackie D!

  • Jane

Looking forward to it, as long as he comes on the show high on mushrooms.

  • sassyfras

Drinking game: Take a shot every time someone does a gratuitous walk’n’talk down the hall. Should be a fun show.

  • Sydney

Cannot wait! Love Sorkin, love his writing, love 30 Rock.

  • doop

Honestly, I can’t believe that article referenced almost all of Sorkin’s work EXCEPT the one that is actually relevant to 30 Rock. Studio 60 debuted the same year as 30 Rock, dealt with a fictional sketch show, and was promptly cancelled. How can you not mention this? EW is really slipping.

    • SoulHonky

Agreed. What would Whoopi say about this kind of shoddy journalism?!

      • Tracy

She’d flaunt her EGOT and tell us all to go to Hades!
