According to the Los Angeles Times, a doctor for CBS 2 TV reporter Serene Branson believes the reporter suffered a complex migraine when she tripped over her sentences while reporting during the Grammy telecast Sunday. Though many thought Branson had a stroke during the live TV moment, the severe migraine boasts symptoms matching a stroke: weakness, loss of vision, and difficulty speaking. Fortunately for Branson, complex migraines have no long-term effect.
Following Branson’s slurred report, the journalist was examined by paramedics. All her vital signs were normal.

What happened to tongue-tied CBS reporter Serene Branson?

As a migraine sufferer myself, I can confirm these symptoms. It’s like a storm in the brain.
That sounds dreadful! Hopefully it’s manageable and won’t cause too many issues for her.
Yeah, that sounds very scary.
Definitely can confirm these symptoms. I have been in the hospital 3 times with symptoms that mimicked a stroke…all due to a severe migraine. Women who suffer from severe migraines need to be aware of this.
I am amazed she could work with that kind of pain.
I can also confirm those symptoms. I suffer from migraines alot and they are terrible. I can barely move and it is kinda like having a stroke
Another migraine sufferer here. It’s pretty much as the others have already described. Sorry she had to go through this on air!
Um, I have had severe chronic migraines since I was a kid. NEVER have my words been garbled like that. I may have been unable to speak, or speak well, but that was a stroke. Anyone who says other wise is foolish! Migraines are horrible, I have been in the hospital for severe pain, but that was not a migraine. Good luck to her
It wasn’t a typical migraine and not all migraines are the same. Obviously, the one this reporter had is different from the kind of that you’ve had. It doesn’t mean it was a stroke. I trust a doctor to give a diagnosis, not someone on an ew comment board. Who are you to call a doctor incorrect?
who are you to tell me I am wrong? Oh I forgot, EW said it, so it must be true! Get. A. Life.
And who are you to say I am incorrect?? Oh I forgot EW said it was true so it must be! Suuurrrre. Get a life idiot, and get real
EW is quoting a doctor, genius. They didn’t actually examine and diagnose her. And neither did you.
OK you are right, golly gee. Yeah, a doctor said she was fine. Allllll doctors are great right? No one makes a mistake or too quick of a judgement. Sure. You are so smart! riiiiight
hella… are u having another stroke?
wow Hella! You really do not have a clear understanding of how it all works. Strokes results from a bleed in the person’s brain which shows itself through loss of speech & movement.
Complex migraines do not result from a bleed in the brain, but does mimmick the sign and symptoms of a stroke. That’s why they do MRI’s and CT Scans to determine if it is truly a stroke or migraine.
I suffer from migraines and have had the complex migraine twice. Maybe your migraines never got to that point that you needed to be hospitalized.
If she were to have had a “stroke” with all of the symptoms she discussed, she would have had to have speech therapy, physical therapy and occupational therapy to help restore the loss.
Highly unlikely for her to have all of those treatments and fully recovered in less than a week. Just doesn’t happen that way
Yeah, we should take the medical opinion of a person on a message board named “hella” over a doctor. Sure thing.
Um, YES it is a migraine. It’s called migraine “with aura”. Google it, educate yourself.
Hella just because you did not experience the identical symptoms, doesn’t make you right.
Migraines for me definitely affect my brain and I have done some really dumb stuff under the effects of one!
dumb sure, but have you talked like that? denial! she isnt seeking it further due to her job. whatever. no one on here is saying that they too sounded like her. it was a stroke
I’ve had migraines and it’s affected my speech, kinda scary but it passes. glad she is ok.
affected your speech, but did it sound like that? Um, I dont think so
Seriously, when you get your MD, start making diagnosis. Until then, STFU.
As I said, obviously it didnt affect it the way she had. Like everyone else here, it may have messed up with your speech, but it wasnt the same. Hello??? Stroke? Glad I also had the ability to mess with your mind!~ Temper temper! Dont want to get a migraine
Ugly little troll.
Hey Linney, could you be more eloquent. NOT !
Yes, and are we what? 11 years old with those two comebacks? Wow! All I am saying is it was a stroke, and you two immature idiots want to throw stones. Um…OK. Good for you.
Umm, yes it is a migraine – it’s called migraine “with aura” – Google it, educate yourself.
I have suffered with this since I was 13 years old and have to carry a note with me everywhere I go, just in case the symptoms come on and I cannot explain what is happening to me.
It’s very weird.. You know what you want to say, but the wrong words come out.
It’s horrific and frightening, but after 24 hours you’re back to normal.
as someone who has expierenced migraines only recently, but have done research into them; many thing can occur, including what happened to her. My migraines, like the one I had today, are due to sinusitis and can work sometimes through them. When it comes to anything that affects the brain, it is amazing how some things mimic others like a stroke. Epilepsy seizures can look like a stroke, my dad had one once so migraines seem to mimic them too.
I’d rather suffer from a complex migraine than be the type of person who can only find satisfaction insisting they’re right and everyone else is wrong on an Internet comment page.
I totallllly agree! These people on here, seem to only think that their idea, thought, etc would be correct. And when I dont bow to their view, they call me names. grow up
??? What is your problem.
Hella, shut the hell up before I smack you upside the head and give you a migraine made of my fist!
Has anybody seen the movie “Pontypool”? That’s what I was reminded of when I saw the news clip in question…
As a migraine sufferer(the kind where moving more than a centimeter hurts…and my vision gets all wavery…) who is something of a hypochondriac…….I’ll now live in fear of this happening to me…..
Ah, allow me to also weigh in here…..serotonin syndrome, from the meds taken for a migraine, can also cause this to happen. In fact, I used to get serotonin syndrome back before they knew you weren’t supposed to mix anti-depressants and triptan migraine meds.
I would take my triptan drug very early on in the migraine and end up more or less incoherent but trying to function, get behind the wheel, go to school, etc. I had to be forced to lie down until my brain went back to normal.
Still waiting on that one, actually….
I had a situation a couple of years ago where I became really disorientated while trying to sign my name. Someone litterally had to guide my hand while I wrote my signature. I had been hit by a car four years prior to that and have had developped periodic “episodes” Head injuries can also bring this on.
Presently, medicine believes the cause of migraines to be vascular: the blood vessels spasm. If severe enough, this could deprive the brain of oxygen and mimic a stroke in the same way a TIA can. However, this level of severity is not a common occurrence and most migraine sufferers will never experience it.
No longer term effects my ass, I had these I almost got into car accident few times. TRY YEAST FREE DIET ( anticandida diet) years of hell, treatments, quacks…I did yeast free diet, 4 months no migraine- nearly cured my other health issues
