Is Kiefer Sutherland coming back to TV this fall?

24-KeiferWhile promoting his Broadway debut opposite Jason Patric and Chris Noth in That Championship SeasonKiefer Sutherland told the New York Times recently that the play brought him a “sense of purpose.” “For the first time in nine years I’m going to have a chance to do whatever I want,” Sutherland recalled telling Patric after moving to New York. “For me this play was too complicated, too challenging not to have a run at it … there’s nothing like being in New York with a sense of purpose.”

Those don’t sound like the words of a guy who’s desperately seeking a return to prime time, but then Sutherland did tell EW in January that he “misses the daily grind” of  TV, despite spending eight long years on 24. So it probably shouldn’t come as a shocker that Sutherland may be looking to stage a comeback to Fox this fall via a drama script by Tim Kring (Heroes). EW confirmed a report in Deadline that the actor is high on the tale about a dad whose autistic son can predict events before they happen, though it’s unclear whether Sutherland can or will commit given that his play just opened last week.

A spokesman for 20th Century Fox TV, which is producing the Kring project for Fox, declined comment.

Fans who are eager to see Sutherland back on the small screen can catch him on the internet in March, when his web series The Confession debuts on Hulu. As EW first reported in January, the 10 five-to-seven-minute webisodes will feature Sutherland as a hitman who has a theological discussion with a priest played by John Hurt. And Sutherland says a big-screen version of 24 is still in the works and that he hopes to begin production within a year.

But TV clearly remains a passion. “24 was a lot of work, it certainly had its ups and downs,” the actor said to EW. “But for so many reasons, it was one of the great experiences of my life. I miss the daily grind of it, which I was surprised about because that’s the one thing you complain about all the time. Be careful what you ask for!”

What do you think, 24 fans? Is it time for Sutherland to stage a triumphant return to Fox?

No! It’s time for 24 the Movie to get done – the world needs Jack Bauer on the job again. I’m gonna need a hacksaw…

oh please, the show has run its course. Jack solved everything from a presidental assassination to nuclear bombs, the only possible thing Jack could prevent now is an alien invasion but obviously not realistic. The problem with doing 9 seasons on tv, it’s hard for us viewers to accept him in any other role. Him acting as a dad of an autistic child? Sorry, not interested.

Didn’t Jason Patric steal his fiance Julia Roberts about 10 years ago!!! Guess he forgave him enough to perform with him

I thought that was Lyle Lovett. And it was way more than 10 years ago.

    • Chad

      More like 20 years ago.

I’d love to see Kiefer back – just not in something written by Tim Kring.

Kiefer back on my tv screen… YAY. Kiefer back on my tv screen on a show by Tim Kring….. NOOOOOOO

  • Miffy

Just do another season of 24.

  • Jack Nolte

Tim Kring is good guy, he only has some bad ideas that keep turning into tv shows. What can I say, big heads love him.

  • Grumpster

No…leave him off. I can’t stand his monotone low-talking voice, or only other tone…yelling.

That TV show idea sounds horrid. NO interest in a “24” movie that screws up the show’s legacy even more than its lousy last season did; hope Kiefer holds out for a role more worthy of his particular talents.

Season 8 was not lousy as you put it. I mean there were elements there that could have been left out (character Dana Walsh, actor Freddie Prinze). But the story line with other characters was pretty decent. **One thing that I did not like was the deaths of Pres. Hasan and Renee Walker happening on back to back episodes. That was just not though out properly, in my opinion of course.

      What do you know!!!!!

    @ Kiefer

Just put all this nonsense aside and get the 24 MOVIES out as soon as possible. Perhaps do another 2 hour made for tv movie in the interim showing the characters’ lives post day 8. That might not sound that appealing to the actor, but I think that’s what is in demand right now.

I think there so much left to tell about Jack Bauer and company, but I think they just need a fresh team of minds to put it together. I think that’s one of the reasons Howard Gordon and crew could not do another season, because they are all burned out.

I would love to see a MOVIE of 24, with him in it, he is a excellent actor in most anything he does, as well as his father. It would be a sell out at the box office, as his series was the best think on T>V> in YEARS, and it was all ways interesting, in what was going to happen next. Lets get him back on T>V> and again, let him have his time to make the 24 movie.

  • Julie

YES YES YES YES I loved 24 and a return to a thriller tv series would be fantastic!!!@

Tim Kring caught lightining in a bottle with Heroes’ first season. But due to his and NBC’s mismanagement the show died a slow and painful death.

  • ps.

I can’t wait for Jack/kiefer to come back to TV. I miss 24 something terrible. I wish they would get started on the 24 movie.
Love kiefer, and Jack Bauer. KS/JB, YOU ARE STILL EYE CANDY. PEACE OUT.
