NBC renews reality lineup; 'The Sing-Off,' 'The Biggest Loser' and 'Who Do You Think You Are' coming back next season

the-sing-offImage Credit: Harper Smith/NBCNBC announced today that it has renewed The Sing-Off, The Biggest Loser, and Who Do You Think You Are for the 2011-12 season. This season’s cycle of The Sing-Off averaged a 3.2 rating/8 share and 9.2 viewers, jumping versus the prior season by 28% in the adult demo and 27% in viewers. The Dec. 20 finale, in which Pop Gospel sensations Committed were crowned champions, tied as the No. 1 primetime telecast of that week in adults 18-49.

Loser has averaged a 3.1/8 in 18-49 and 9 million viewers so far this season, and remains NBC’s No. 1 entertainment series among women 18-49 and women 25-54. And season two of Who Do You Think You Are is averaging a 1.4/4 and 7 million viewers on Fridays. Upcoming episodes will feature Kim Cattrall, Gwyneth Paltrow, Lionel Richie, Ashley Judd and Steve Buscemi.

“Alternative series such as these three bona fide hits are important not only to their loyal audiences but also as strong components of the NBC schedule,” said NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt in a statement.  “They are each unique, attention-getting shows with terrific producing and talent auspices, and we’re proud to be associated with them.”

      And the winner is…
      Katie!
For her response to world peace, er, the Biggest Loser “cant stand that Cara chicks voice…”
the subtraction of apostrophes gave the comments added flair and biting commentary.

Jillians’s on screen antics were becoming a bore for me. I love the Biggest L…I have watched since day One because I find it truly inspiring. While I don’t have a weight problem I find the show to be a euphemisim for life. Jillian’s in your face approach has definitely made me channel surf over the past couple season’s. Maybe I am wrong but I don’t think the show is about her or Bob. I find the lives of the contestants and their struggles and triumps more compelling.

While Cara may not have the same psychological ‘skills’ as you like to call them, you have to admit that she DOES get results (consistent double digits from the Losers) which l would say is more telling of her training regimen.

I for one am glad to see The Sing-Off sticking around, as a total a cappella geek. I think part of the reason such a niche concept is able to generate so much interest and actually GAIN momentum year to year is because it’s very smartly scheduled. Two weeks, bam, done, see ya next year. It’s an event, it’s fun, and I look forward to next year!

    • JC

I agree. It’s always done during the holiday break so no harm, no foul in taking the spot of a good show. It’s quick and easy and something to look forward to each year.

    • Dave

Hopefully they’ll keep the same schedule for it and not overdo it. I remember when Deal or No Deal started off as a fun little week-long “event” too. Then NBC went completely overboard and made it a regular series and scheduled it 3 days a week throughout entire seasons, with some episodes being two hours long.

    • Delon

The Sing-off is the best talent show!
Love it! Love it! Love it!

  • Sarah

The Biggest Loser needs to go away.

    • PJ

      So do you.

    • Tarc

We always need less pointless filler TV, and the Biggest Loseer is just heinous.

  • Little Earthquake

Interesting. Not a fan really. Prefer scripted tv.

  • Dimitri

I am very glad that Biggest Loser is coming back. I watch every week with brother Nikoli and sister Natalya. I like watch Jillian yell at overweights people. American overweights people need help and Biggest Loser help them. In Russia, they would be sent to Siberia to power electricity and animal testing facilities. Biggest loser rocks and rolls!

  • Aaron

I swear the Biggest Loser is the only NBC show I hear about. Can that be a good thing for the network?

  • Anastasia

I do not watch any programming on NBC, and this is why. They are going to renew these idiotic reality shows instead of putting on any kind of quality shows. Once upon a time, for like half a season, I watched Biggest Loser. It’s old, it’s been done to death and needs to go off the air. The others, I can’t imagine wasting one minute of my time on. The only reason any of these reality shows do anything in the ratings is because that’s all that’s on, so the couch potatoes think it must be good and they watch. Morons.

    • Dottie Jo

Who do You think You Are is not a “reality show” in the pure sense of the phrase. Although they don’t work for the research they are given, the stories of their ancestors lives are fascinating, especially if you are into genealogy. Many people can relate to the stories, because they vary the celebrities. You should try watching before you judge people as “couch potatoes” or “morons”.

      • Gwen

It has been interesting to watch the subjects react to what they learn about their ancestors; in some cases they become very emotional (Vanessa Williams, Rosie O’Donnell). My whole family watches this show, and it has inspired us to research our own family history.

  • peggy Tackos

If you really want to watch a quality show on NBC, try PARENTHOOD, it’s on Tuesdays’ at 10 P.M.

  • max

they already left they arnt on da shows no more lady.!

  • LOL

What a steaming pile. All garbage.

  • shoshana

    awesome

  • Redvector

How pathetic that the only show’s on NBC that get renewed are reality crap.

  • kaysey

i love “who do you think you are”. Ive been doing genealogy research for the last 15 years, and its awesome to find out interesting stories about ancestors

  • Shaina

    Yay, Sing-Off!! Can’t wait for Season 3!!
