UPDATE: 'NCIS' ties 'Glee' in ratings

NCISImage Credit: Patrick Wymore/CBSUPDATE: In the national Nielsen ratings update released Thursday morning, the race had tightened and Glee and NCIS are now tied.

PREVIOUS: The NCIS team tackled Fox’s Glee in the ratings Tuesday night, the ultra-veteran CBS crime procedural beating the musical comedy phenomena for the first time in the 18-49 adult demo.

NCIS delivered 21.3 million viewers and a 4.4 preliminary adult demo rating, just barely squeezing out Glee with 10.5 million viewers and a 4.3 rating. (NCIS typically wins Tuesday in total audience, but it’s the adult demo that advertisers covet and broadcasters primarily use to make their programming decisions.)

Still, Fox should have no complaints: Glee was up from last week, with Raising Hope (6.2 million, 2.5) and struggling newbie Traffic Light (4.1 million, 1.7) climbing slightly too.

Overall, CBS won the night with NCIS: LA (3.9) matching its season high. News wasn’t all sunny for CBS since The Good Wife (1.9) tied its series low.

Fox was in second place, with NBC third thanks to a steady The Biggest Loser (7.5 million, 2.7), followed by a slightly improved Parenthood (5.5 million, 2.1) that won 10 p.m.

ABC is having a rough time on Tuesdays. No Ordinary Family (4.8 million, 1.4) was down to a series low. V (5.1 million, 1.9) was steady, followed by Primetime (4.2 million, 1.4).

On the CW, One Tree Hill (2 million, 0.9) was up a tick, while Hellcats fell (1.7 million, 0.6) to its series low.

Yes!!!!!!! I dont watch either, but anything beating Glee is ok with me

    • Jay

I agree! I would love nothing more than for Glee to be gone so I can stop hearing about it.
The surprising thing is, I dont know A SINGLE PERSON who actually watches the show

      • whereisit

Thank God for a true American show like NCIS. Beat the crap out of that Glee mess.

      • @ whereisit

“true American” as in military propaganda? No, thank you.

      • Bethany

True American as in supporting the troops who are defending your country, family, and livelihood.

      • bob

So what, you think it’s a conspiracy? Ever think it just might not fall in your social circle? Example: I don’t know ANYONE who watches NCIS. So are the ratings a lie for it as well?

      • Dave

@ Whereisit. I agree that Glee has gotten annoying, this coming from a once steadfastly loyal fan–it needss to go. But there are enough cop shows, and medical dramas, and procedural shows on the air. I’d rather see shows like Friday Night Lights–that is some great Americana right there.

    • joblo

I love it too! And Traffic Light is pretty darn hilarious, even if it has a weird name.

    • BLM

Beauteous Max, Jay and joblo, I think you guys are my new best friends!

    • Rebecca

I agree!! I have seen a couple NCIS, but I hate Glee, so anything beating Glee makes me extremely glad!!!

    • why hate

Irrational hate is odd. Don’t like find but really to actively hate on something is weird.

  • GS

I really wish Fox would put American Idol back on Tuesday nights. The worst night of the week for tv is Tuesday.

  • LittleLightofLove12

Was there a special guest star on NCIS or something?

    • Karin

nope, nothing special going on last night on NCIS. Aside from someone trying to hack the Pentagon and shutting down it’s computer network

    • Clarissa

Not really except for that one girl from “Leverage” I think.

      • LittleLightofLove12

So how can this show gets this many viewers. its the same crap over and over again.

      • Nimmie

Yeah, you give Beth Riesgraf a guest shot on a struggling show like NCIS, and suddenly it’s winning its timeslot. I love it.

      • Jeff M.

this show gets ratings because you love the people on the show it is a very good show and will be around for at 3 more years. I have watched it from the start and cant stop watching it..i even wacth the reruns on USA all the time. Its just a great show.

      • Jeff M.

To Nimmie… NCIS has the most viewers of any other show on tv. it is not a struggling show please get your facts right before you open your mouth.

      • Kris

I hope you’re being sarcastic about NCIS “struggling.” They kick the crap out of most of the overall competition every week as far as total viewers (almost 21 million last week) and is the #1 drama on TV and has been for quite a while. The point of this article is the specific demographic that factors into the rating (not the same thing as total viewership) that determines advertising and programming decisions.

      • oink

yes i believe Nimmie is just being sarcastic

  • matt

Great for the NCIS pair. Glad it beat Glee. Last night’s Glee was so bad too so not surprised. As for The Good Wife, I find that show so incredibly boring. I end up watching both NCIS’s and then tune away from CBS.

  • adnaper

CBS shows were all an hour earlier in the Chicagoland area, because of the election. That’s why it gave me a moment’s pause to hear NCIS beat Glee since they were on at different times in our area.

    • Chloe2

The ratings are national, not just Chicago. I believe in a case like this, election resulots, Chicago didn’t even count.

  • cameobrooch

Glee is the sort of show that tends to suffer from backlash at some point, so it’s not too surprising that it has (temporarily?) lost its hold on its timeslot.

  • Allen

I wonder when the idea of the Big Three is not going to include ABC or NBC anymore? It seems to me that Fox has been steadily in the #2 or #3 spot for some time now. Sorry this isn’t really the place for this comment, but I had to share, now I feel better and that’s all the matters right?

    • @ Allen

I agree with NBC, but ABC? You’re delusional.

      • Allen

delusional, spot on…such a fine line, but thank you for agreeing with me about part of the truth…sooner or later, you’ll come around, they all do…

  • Silver

I like both shows, but NCIS is my favorite. While it’s beaten GLEE often for the TOTAL amount of viewers, not this supposed “magic category”.

    • Jeff M.

@silver it has never lost to glee in total viewers…ever.

      • Meagan

        Can you read?
“(NCIS typically wins Tuesday in total audience, but it’s the adult demo that advertisers covet and broadcasters primarily use to make their programming decisions.)”

NCIS consistently has a total viewers number in the 20 millions while Glee normally gets half that. This is the first time NCIS has beat Glee in the 18-49 demographic

      • Meagan

never mind, I obviously can’t read, I thought that said it has never won to glee… it’s been a long day ha sorry

I love NCIS. Keep Ziva on the show!

  • PixxieTrixxie

I am an adult who watches Glee and I must admit that lately I have been questioning myself about why. Lately, we have been taping the show so my husband can watch No Ordinary Family and V – to tell you the truth, I even forgot until now that I still had Glee to watch.

  • sam

    Heck yeah for parenthood!!!!!!:)

  • Jordan

I Love GLEE :) Im Just Happy Its Always At The Top, And Will Be For Awhile…

  • Bobby’s Robot

Maybe because the quality of the once-enjoyable Glee has been declining rapidly.

    • ej

Best ep of the season actually

      • Dave

…which is not really a difficult feat to achieve when nearly every episode this season so far has been terrible.

      • Marc

I completely agree with you, Glee last night was amazing! It had so much more comedy and i was surprised to see that they sent the message across with a subject like alcohol in a very fun way.

@ Dave, you don’t even know what you’re talking about. They had two bad episodes, only two (“Britney/Brittany”, and “The Rocky Horror Glee Show”). Since both of them aired during the first 5 episodes, people started chaining one after another how bad it is. For a show with that music, 10M + viewers is an amazing feat. Go hate somewhere else. (btw, I’m an NCIS fan too).

  • Sarah

Parenthood was once again wonderful last night. Glad its ratings were up, even if it wasn’t by much.

  • PJL

NCIS had more than double the total viewers than Glee. I wish that 18-49 demo would go away. It seems that has become the only data that’s important and the rest of the viewers don’t count at all.

    • Jay

Its pure economics…. the 18-49 age group are the ones who go out and spend money on all this advertized crap. I fall into this age group, but then… its a pretty wide age group.
If you are older or younger than this, sorry to say, your opinion doesn’t matter as much to advertizers.

    • Clarissa

I hate that they focus so much on the 18-49 demo. NCIS usually beats Glee in the 25-54 demo, which isn’t that different from 18-49. Why not just make it the 18-54 demo?

      • sm

Some networks have tried to convince the advertisers to focus more on the 25-54 age group but not much success so far… Apparently the advertisers’ focus on 18-49 has to do with scarcity. There are fewer young people watching television so a show that manages to reach them will attract more ad dollars.
