Anti-Defamation League criticizes Charlie Sheen for 'borderline anti-Semitism'

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is rebuking Charlie Sheen for mocking his producer’s name.

In a statement to EW, Abraham H. Foxman, ADL’s national director, called Sheen’s radio rant on Thursday “bizarre” and “borderline anti-Semitism.”

“By invoking television producer Chuck Lorre’s Jewish name in the context of an angry tirade against him, Charlie Sheen left the impression that another reason for his dislike of Mr. Lorre is his Jewishness,” Foxman said. “This fact has no relevance to Mr. Sheen’s complaint or disagreement, and his words are at best bizarre, and at worst, borderline anti-Semitism.”

Charlie Sheen verbally attacked Two and a Half Men co-creator Lorre, calling him a “clown” and a “stupid, stupid little man,” and said he “violently hates” the producer.

Sheen referred to Lorre several times as “Haim Levine” (Lorre was born Charles Michael Levine).

yeah, we way overreacted with mel gibson. because he’s such a stable, loving, non-threatening guy.

  • TheDood

Anti-semetic? Not at all. I think if Charlie wanted to bash jewish people he’d of been more direct. This organization just weakened their cause as far as I’m concerned.

    • danville

There was no reason for Charlie to (mis) state Chuck Lorre’s real name, except to let the public know that Lorre is Jewish. If Charlie had just stuck to insulting Lorre, that would have been fine. Instead, Charlie let the public know that Lorre was Jewish, implying that Lorre was keeping Charlie from working.

Charlie wasn’t more direct because he wants to continue working, unlike Mel Gibson.

      • Grimm

Hey, if you read Lorre’s entire card, where this all stems from, is Lorre not also offensive? Referring to the people who surrounded Israel (aka Muslims) as “crazy bastards”? I’d say both of these guys need to check themselves …

    • PM

He really was defaming Lorre for his passage at the end of one show. I really think there was tension behind the scenes with both Charlie and Mr. Lorre that we don’t know about, some off camera bickering about how the scenes were done that might have pushed Charlie’s anger into overload.

  • jaffer

i actually think they’re under-reacting. he clearly is anti Semitic.

    • J Ben

      “he clearly is anti Semitic.”

      Absolutely not.

Charlie is allowed to call anyone ‘Chaim’. It is not antisemitic to call someone by their name, even if they are jewish. (rolling eyes)

“he wants to continue working, unlike Mel Gibson.”

This ethnocentric slander is getting out of hand. Mel Gibson was drunk and said a few sentences about Jewish people. Who cares ? If he said the same thing about Italians, do you think any of them would be petty enough to still be whining about it years later ?

      • TBT

        So true

      • Samantha

SO FALSE. If you’re not Jewish, perhaps you don’t understand, but it’s a big deal to Jews. I don’t 100% think that Sheen was anti-semitic (although he is a whack job), but Gibson said a little more than a few sentences. One example:

“F*****g Jews… The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.”

Have fun getting hired by Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg!

      • Ana

Only Chaim isn’t his name. Chuck’s real name is Charles Michael Levine.

      • J Ben

“The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.”

Honestly, if he said “The Polish are responsible for all the wars in the world”, it would be laughed-at for a few minutes, and forgotten completely in a few weeks.

An example of true antisemitism was the murder of that young Jewish man in Paris “Ilan Halimi”. That was absolutely terrible, and should never be tolerated by any group. What Mel Gibson said/did is truly unbelievably trivial in comparison, and yet Mel receives more negative press and slander against him than the torturers/killers in Paris…

What Mel said did not cause any actual damage to any Jewish person. But over-reactive responses (such as the response to his outburst) can cause Jewish people to be seen as irrational and hubristic.

I’m Italian and hear jokes about Italy and Italians all the time..some are not exactly flattering; I laugh.
The sames happens with everyone except when the subject is judaism. Then you risk loosing your job and being called antisemite.
I stumbled upon this thread looking for Sheen’s rant, but now I feel the need to protect my rights against an open attack to our freedoms by the ADL.

    • Vincent

This is so scary, that a part of our population understand propernes in such a radical and different way. It is almost an attack on our society and our freedoms. To see how arrogant some people are to create victimism out of something so far detatched and trivial is example of a real danger that works inversely. The real danger is false victimism and sectarianism in a multicultural and open society like it is our Americana.

  • jen

given that sheen HIMSELF changed his name, shut up.

    • Alaq

So would someone get fired if he called Sheen by his real name? Would that be considered as some form of racism? Go back reading your gossip magazines…

    • TQB

Alaq, are you saying you can’t think of a tirade someone might have centering around a guy named “Estevez?” Go back to reading Mein Kampf.

    • jen

actually they probably would if they did it deliberatly in a hat-filled rant. so once again. shut up.

  • Barack Palin

I don’t think necessarily that Charlie Sheen is being anti-Semitic as anti-Chuck Lorre. No matter what nationality his last name originally was I think Charlie Sheen would use it to emphatize his obviolus dislike for Chuck Lorre. On the other hand I think its more interesting why Chuck Lorre felt the need to change his given name; with all due respect I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Charles Levine.

    • jen

everyone in hollywood changes their name. Charlie Sheen wasn’t born with that name. and yes, when a jerk on a hate-rant deliberately uses an ethnic version of someone’s name? it’s a pretty sure-fire sign that they are a prejudiced jerk. like you.

      • Novo

If you were stabbed and killed by a man but no racial reasons were found or given. Do you think he should receive a shorter sentence then someone who says afterwards he did it because you are a Jewish woman?

Cause if we are going to lampoon charlie sheen for a single sentence then we should report you to the ADL for calling Barack Palin a racist jerk. Cause you are labeling him for his opinion and calling him a derogatory name when you say “jerk”.

Your statement here is hypocritical at best. Delusional at worst. If you are going to call people out on things you should at least know what you are doing.

      • nobrain

        novo…. that makes no sense

      • Bjorn

No. It’s a sign that they’re a hypocrite. Sheen (Estevez) is a Hypocrite. That doesn’t make him an anti-semite. Anyway, doesn’t the ADL have some mosques to oppose?

    • Rusty Shackelford

What’s wrong with Carlos Estevez? Too ethnic sounding for him?

      • TBT

Apparently he wanted to ride on his fathers stage name.

Is “Haim Levine” too ethnic for ‘chuck’. If he wants to around ‘his dna’ then why the gentrified name?

    • JS

Everybody’s missing the fact that Lorre recently had one of his vanity cards penned from Israel, where he mused on his name Chaim Levine (#327 on his website). It’s not like Sheen pulled this out of nowhere.

I certainly don’t support Sheen in all this, but let’s pull back on the allegations of “hate speak” and “anti-Semitism”. He’s feuding with Lorre, not an entire religion!

      • Novo

Holy cow, someone hit it on the button. “Yay!” for intelligence.

      • TBT

  • Zee

FFS people cut it out with the “should of” and “he’d of” if you want to at least appear literate.
Should HAVE or should’ve; he’d HAVE.
    Carry on…

  • Scott

Yes, because Charlie Sheen was born “Charlie Sheen”.

    • Alaq

      see my reply above.

    • Scott

Alaq, if that is your name, your point originally was that Lorre was contributing to this because of his name change. Your response to the reply similar to mine had nothing to do with the response itself. You wrote that the name change contributed to it, while I and others have pointed out that Carlos has been using a different name. Perhaps your response should have been about what he has to hide (considering how much he doesn’t hide, I would be scared to discover just exactly what he has to hide).

  • howdy

This is the least of Charlie’s problems

  • TQB

You do realize that all these paranoid comments are just proving the ADL right, yes?

  • Stacey

I think it’s clear there is no love lost. Neither like each other right now. What Charlie said yesterday was stupid, completely bizarre. But then Chuck did fan the flames with that vanity card that said that he would be pissed if Charlie outlived him. So basically rooting for his death. But then Charlie changed his name to a stage name too…he was born Carlos Estevez, but took his father’s stage last name, Sheen. But I think obviously Charlie was pissed and went too far. I stil say the show will be back next season. CBS will lose too much money if they don’t bring it back if both parties are willing to work. If Charlie doesn’t come back; the show is dead. No way does the show work without Charlie Sheen.

  • Charles Hill

@Shakespreare America is home to the double standard, for instance, prison populations, medical care and the gender of corporate executives. Loss of inhibitions due to drugs or alcohol often shows the true nature of the individual. Your comment,”the Jews ALWAYS try to sucker punch someone,” shows yours.

    • Carl Johnson

      Thank you, well said.

      • Sameer

you sound so lame! go hate on someone else. you nretud down a pilot to stay with a successful show? yeah, are we to believe that wasn very hard decision? i like charlie sheen and, as a fan of the show, am pissed that the vanity of Chuck Lorre is getting in the way of the rest of the world. when Lorre’s mean statement came out, it seemed like gentle ribbing from a friend and equal, but knowing they don’t like each other, it seems like kicking someone when they are vunerable.

  • jen

also, his name was never Haim or Chaim. it was always Charles.

  • Charles Hill

@JL Thanks for your comment, Adolph

  • Charles Hill

I agree, but Chuck has a big advantage over Charlie by having many hit shows on TV.

  • Rusty Shackelford

I find it highly ironic that Sheen calls somebody out about their name when he doesn’t even use his birth given name.
