Official: Olbermann joining Al Gore's Current TV
Can Keith Olbermann finally convince viewers to watch Al Gore’s struggling cable network?
Olbermann will launch a new nightly primetime news and commentary show later this year on the net, which is currently in 60 million U.S. households. The pundit is exuberantly described in the official Current press release as an “acclaimed broadcaster and writer whose verbal pyrotechnics and moral passion have outraged, informed, and dazzled viewers of Countdown With Keith Olbermann for the past eight years” who is “bringing his slashing wit, analytical eye, and distinctive commentary” to the network.
“Nothing is more vital to a free America than a free media, and nothing is more vital to my concept of a free media than news produced independently of corporate interference,” said Olbermann, who will also serve as the network’s “Chief News Officer” and will have an equity stake in the company. “In Current Media, Al Gore and Joel Hyatt have created the model truth-seeking entity.” READ FULL STORY »
'30 Rock' scoop: Tracy Morgan's back at work
Image Credit: Ali Goldstein/NBCHappy endings on the set of 30 Rock! EW has learned that Tracy Morgan — who underwent a kidney transplant in December — is back at work! Morgan — aka Tracy Jordan, the star of the show within the show – missed several episodes of the NBC comedy to recover from the successful surgery in New York (EW first reported the news). A source told EW that his appearances are minimal in his first couple of episodes back, but the show will explain his disappearance.
Morgan’s break from the Emmy-winning show was serious, but he still generated a few fun headlines while he was away. He was seen looking healthy at a Knicks game soon after his surgery, and last month, he made a crude remark about Sarah Palin during a pregame show on TNT. The network promptly issued an apology. A week later, Morgan issued his own mea culpa, of sorts, on the red carpet of the Screen Actors Guild. After he thanked his kidney donor and the 30 Rock writers, he declared that Palin is “the hottest MILF in the world!”
Keith Olbermann heading to Current TV: report

An official announcement from Olbermann is expected later today, and Current TV has scheduled a presentation for potential advertisers for Wednesday. The left-leaning cable station, co-founded by Al Gore in 2005, is available in 60 million homes.

Eminem's Chrysler Super Bowl ad: Behind the scenes of one of Sunday's best commercials
Chrysler’s “Imported From Detroit” ad has been called one of the best commercials of Super Bowl XLV. “It’s not like we set out to do a two-minute commercial with Eminem,” Melissa Garlick, head of Chrysler advertising, tells EW. He was originally approached just about using “Lose Yourself” in the ad because it’s a great comeback anthem. The more Chrysler management, including CEO Sergio Marchionne, spoke with him, the more they realized they shared the same passion for the city, and he agreed to be in the commercial. “We weren’t looking to make him a spokesperson or a sales pitch guy. We wanted him to talk from the heart,” Garlick says. It just felt natural for him to deliver the final line in the script: “This is the Motor City, and this is what we do.” READ FULL STORY »
FX renews 'The League' for third season
Continuing this sports-themed day of Inside TV blog programming, FX just announced a third season pickup for its comedy series The League. The second season of the scripted show set against the backdrop of a fantasy football league was on the bubble for the network, averaging 1.4 million total viewers and 1.1 million adults 18-49, but that’s up five percent from season one. Says creators Jackie and Jeff Schaffer: “FX truly is like the parents we wish we had growing up — every time we say something naughty, they reward us.”

'Vampire Diaries' scoop: Lauren Cohan talks exit from the show, upcoming 'Chuck' arc
Image Credit: Quantrell D. Colbert/The CWIt turns out, you can’t actually sleep when you’re dead. At least not if you’re an actress whose character got as meaty and moving a send-off as Lauren Cohan’s Rose did on the Jan. 27 episode of The Vampire Diaries. The actress has already moved on to filming a five-episode arc on NBC’s Chuck, which begins Feb. 21 when Valentine’s Day is interrupted because a reclusive young heiress named Vivian McArthur (Cohan) needs protection in England. When we finally caught up with her last Friday, she’d just spent the morning testing for three pilots — a mix of cable and broadcast, comedy and drama. She hadn’t even had a chance to watch the previous night’s episode of Vampire Diaries yet, so she had to ask us who Damon (Ian Somerhalder) took a bath with. (Then she genuinely sighed “ooh” as we described the tears in his eyes as he poured his heart out to his new distraction before biting her during tub sex. “That’s what makes him so sexy, that tortured soul,” she said. The episode was waiting for her on iTunes.) READ FULL STORY »

Simon Cowell: I don't watch the new 'Idol'
Simon Cowell says he has not watched an episode of Fox’s American Idol since he left the show.
“I haven’t seen a full episode yet,” the former Idol judge told reporters on a conference call for his upcoming music competition series, The X Factor. “I saw three minutes of a recap last week. From what I’ve seen, from what I’ve heard, it all seems to be going well. I always thought that would be the case. What I was more concerned about was the ratings falling off a cliff, meaning that that whole genre is over. I think the good news is that people are still excited about these shows, whether it be that show, Dancing with the Stars, which has definitely gotten better over the years, America’s Got Talent, which the ratings have gone up over the years. People, thank god, still like these shows, and that gives me more confidence when we launch ours… I think they’ve done a good job.” READ FULL STORY »

Larry the Cable Guy on his new History series, 'Only in America' (and which segment almost gave him a heart attack)
Image Credit: Kyle ChristyLarry the Cable Guy (a.k.a. Dan Whitney) knows the reaction most folks have when they hear he has a new series debuting Feb. 8 on History: “They start laughing. They don’t believe it,” he says. “It’s kinda the same reaction that you would get if you said Charlie Sheen was doing commercials for eHarmony.com.” But when the idea for Only in America with Larry the Cable Guy, a 13-part series in which the comedian travels the nation profiling the people, places, and things that define our unique history, it made sense to him: “I go on stage and as I lead into some news topics of the day, I tell people the reason I don’t watch the news anymore is they only cover that 1 percent of the population that are dirtbags,” he tells EW. “When you watch the news, it makes you think there’s no hope. But I travel all around the country, and I see nothing but good people. People that are working together — it doesn’t matter what color you are, what country you’re from — they’re all gettin’ along, and you don’t see those people gettin’ covered on the news. That’s why we are the greatest country in the world, because the majority of us do get along and love the country.” He wants to do his part to restore a little pride back in the USA by reminding people “we got a badass culture,” he says. He does everything from taking an etiquette lesson with the descendants of Emily Post to launching a jet off the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier. It’s the first series he’s ever done that’s allowed him to be both Larry the Cable Guy and Dan Whitney. Meaning, there’s both humor and heart. Here’s a taste of what to expect: READ FULL STORY »
