'Outsourced' actor Parvesh Cheena: 'We don't put under a microscope shows with lower-income white families.' Plus, The Great Khali's big cameo -- EXCLUSIVE

Categories: EW Exclusive, Outsourced

Parvesh-CheemaImage Credit: Justin Lubin/NBCOutsourced had it tough right out of the gate. Critics and various groups with the word “association” in them took offense to the portrayal of Indians, and some might say, rightly so. But has the show moved past that initial drama? Parvesh Cheena, who plays Gupta on the show, certainly thinks so.

“To be fair, I think our show is under the microscope a little bit a lot more than other shows, because it was the first of its kind,” he tells EW. “We don’t put under a microscope some other shows that deal with lower-income white families. If Married With Children hadn’t come out when it did, would we really be looking at Roseanne, The Middle, and Raising Hope and being, like, ‘Look at how stereotypical they are to lower-income white people!’ When you have the first show set in India on American television, there’s gonna be a Nervous Nellie kind of vibe.” But, he says, they’ve moved on and truly found “a genuine quality to a lot of our characters.”  READ FULL STORY »

'Jeopardy' superwinner Brad Rutter on his loss to supercomputer Watson: 'We definitely felt like we could win'

Categories: Game Shows, Television

Brad-RutterImage Credit: Ben Hider/Getty ImagesIt was a sad day for humans everywhere when supercomputer Watson beat out superwinners (except in this case) Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings in Jeopardy‘s epic three-day Man vs. Machine battle. So EW hopped on the phone with Rutter to talk about this tragic loss for the human race, his strategy going into the battle, and buzz in his answer for one major burning question: Will there be a rematch?

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Tell me, Brad, how are you coping with this devastating loss?
BRAD RUTTER: Oh, it hasn’t had time to sink in yet, really. Well, actually, it has. We taped it. But I’ve been so busy I haven’t had much time to think about it. [Laughs] But yeah, hey, they had to build a $10 million supercomputer to beat me. So that’s not all bad.  READ FULL STORY »

Tim Allen returning to TV in ABC pilot

tim-allenImage Credit: FilmMagic Inc/FilmMagic.comABC just persuaded a major player from its glory days to come back and engage in a little home improvement. Tim Allen — whose long-running role as Tim Taylor on Home Improvement helped to propel ABC to No. 1 — will star in an unnamed multi-camera comedy pilot (the working title was The Last Days of Man).

Penned by the Emmy-winning Jack Burditt (The Mike O’Malley Show, Inside Schwartz), the comedy focuses on a guy’s guy who’s surrounded by women. The storyline is still being adjusted, but the original logline spoke of a character who is “fighting for his manhood in a world that is being increasingly dominated by women.”  READ FULL STORY »

NBC's 'The Voice' opens the gates to pop-stardom to anyone with a webcam

Categories: Music, Reality TV, TV Biz

Aspiring pop-stars won’t need to stand in line for their shot at stardom anymore. For Mark Burnett’s new NBC singing competition, The Voice, potential contestants can showcase their pipes from home, using their home computer’s webcam. The nifty “Voice Online Audition Tool” records performances and rates them on a scale from 1 to 10 — the highest-rated submissions will draw consideration from The Voice‘s casting team. Wannabes have until March 1 to record their singing on the NBC website.

The Voice, which will be hosted by Carson Daly when it airs this spring, will place special emphasis on vocal talent, as the show’s judges will initially select contestants without seeing them perform.

InsideTV Podcast: Picking the best and worst 'Glee' couples; sizing up the crazies on 'Survivor' and 'American Idol'

Sam & Quinn have broken up on Glee. And we couldn’t be happier! They took the title of most boring couple, but things with Sam may finally spice up now that he’s locking lips with Santana. On this week’s edition of the InsideTV Podcast, Annie Barrett, Tim Stack and I rate the couples from best to worst. Which ones do we love and loathe? Listen in to find out. Plus: The first hour of Survivor: Redemption Island eclipsed every single hour of Survivor: Nicaragua, and a lot of that was due to a former federal agent in droopy fuchsia underwear suffering from dry mouth. (Hey, he’s getting treated!) We break down that insanity, plus take a look at American Idol‘s Hollywood Week. Can Clint Jun Gamboa get America to forgive him for kicking portly 15-year-old Jacee out of his group? And how the hell did ticking emotional time bomb Ashley make it through to the next round? We have theories!

To join in the fun, just click on the audio player icon below. (WARNING: Annie and I are both sick, and therefore even loopier than usual.) Or, since we’re now on iTunes, you can subscribe for free and take the podcast with you on the go. No iTunes? No problem. You can also download the entire podcast right here. David Arquette will appear on 'Oprah' instead of Michael Vick

David-ArquetteImage Credit: Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic.comOn Feb. 24, Oprah‘s audience will have to Scream for David Arquette instead of Michael Vick. Harpo has confirmed to EW that an interview with the actor will air on Feb. 24 instead of one with Michael Vick, who backed out Wednesday for “personal reasons,” according to Harpo. Arquette taped his interview on Thursday, Feb. 17. (Said Vick via his rep in a statement: “After careful consideration, I will need to postpone the taping of the Oprah Winfrey interview scheduled for February 22. I admire and respect Oprah and hope to be able to participate in an interview in the future.”) It’s a good trade-off for Winfrey: Though not as controversial a figure as Vick, Arquette made headlines earlier this year for his split from wife, Courteney Cox, and a subsequent all-too-revealing interview with Howard Stern about his marriage. Arquette’s over-sharing tendencies should bode well for Winfrey’s ratings.

'Fringe': Joshua Jackson answers more of your questions. More musicals? Best gross-out? Does Peter tweet?

Categories: Fringe, Sci-Fi, Television

Joshua-Jackson-FringeImage Credit: Liane Hentscher/FoxWe’ll get to the second part of our fan Q&A with Fringe star Joshua Jackson in just a second, beginning with the question that caused TV’s Peter Bishop to reminisce about throwing up a bit in his mouth. But first, let’s talk about the most troubling element of last week’s installment. No, not the spoiler-averse actor’s curious-in-retrospect response to your speculations about Fauxlivia’s pregnancy – speculation that last week’s episode confirmed as correct. (Clearly, he was trying to protect the big twist.) No, I’m talking about the part where he spelled out what Fringe fans need to do to help insure a fourth season: “The way to save the show is very simple: If you’re a hardcore fan of the show – and in particular, if you’re a hardcore fan of the show with a Nielsen box – you have to give us an hour of your time on Friday night.” Apparently, not everyone got the message. Fringe’s ratings slipped to an alarming low last week – 3.7 million viewers, down 13 percent from the week before (though the show did get a big 57 percent uptick in the demo when the DVR eyeballs were counted.) 'Idol' tops Thursday as NBC ties all-time low

Most shows hit season lows on Thursday night, making this week the second week in a row that programs declined nearly across the board. NBC’s headline was the harshest of the bunch: The network ranked last among the major broadcasters and tied its lowest-rated Thursday night ever.

With struggling freshman sitcoms Perfect Couples (1.4 preliminary adult demo rating) and Outsourced (1.5) leading the way to the bottom, NBC had Community (1.8), The Office (3.3), Parks and Recreation (2.3), and 30 Rock (2.0). Only Community remained steady compared to last week and all shows tied their season lows. READ FULL STORY »

Joshua Jackson: 'Start the campaign' to save 'Fringe'

Joshua-JacksonImage Credit: Liane Hentscher/FoxFans wondering about the fate of Fringe are not alone. Star Joshua Jackson is watching the ratings along with the rest of us.

“I’m a positive person in general, but we really need our Fringe fans to tune in and watch us on Fridays,” Jackson tells EW. “We did good when we first moved, but last week we did not have a good week, ratings wise. It is going to take the people that like the show to watch the show and start the campaign and show their support if they want to see us stick around for another season.”

Meanwhile, more data has come in about those ratings from last Friday: The episode’s adult demo climbed 57 percent over the next three days thanks to DVR playback. That’s a lot, and higher than the previous Friday’s Fringe DVR gain, suggesting that more fans are electing to watch the show over the weekend (not enough, however, to change the overall story — numbers still fell when comparing week to week). Still, the data reinforces Jackson’s point: Fans need to watch the show on Fridays.

As for what comes next on the show, Jackson gave us more reasons to tune in … READ FULL STORY »
