'Glee' star Mike O'Malley talks his new pilot and rumors he's leaving the series: 'I would not have taken this job if they prevented me from continuing as Burt Hummel'

Sadly, there’s no new Glee episode tonight, Gleeks. But we do have some reassuring news about series star Mike O’Malley, who plays Kurt’s loving father Burt. The actor has signed on to shoot a pilot for Fox called Family Album, which immediately made fans think that Burt’s days on Glee might be numbered. But O’Malley stresses that he is in no rush to leave the show. “This is one of the best parts I’ve ever had in my life,” says O’Malley. “I don’t want to leave it behind until it’s run its course or the story has run its course.” He adds, “I would not have taken this job, as much as I like Family Album, if they prevented me from continuing as Burt Hummel. I would show up to Glee every day. It’s a really thrilling place to work.” Luckily, both the pilot and Glee have the same network (Fox) and studio (20th Century Fox) behind them, so it’s been fairly easy to figure out O’Malley’s commitments if Album does indeed go to series. Says the actor, “Part of working out this deal was to say that if Family Album gets picked up as a series, I will still be able to do at least six episodes of Glee. That doesn’t mean only six episodes. Only [series co-creator] Ryan Murphy can ultimately tell you where he wants this to go.”

O’Malley’s Burt will pop up in next week’s big Gwyneth Paltrow episode. (He jokes, “People aren’t calling it MY episode?”) He says that fans can expect a follow-up to last week’s storyline of Burt dealing with Kurt potentially becoming more intimate with men. Says O’Malley, “It’s an evolution for Burt too.”

Meanwhile, O’Malley is preparing to shoot the pilot for single-camera comedy Album, in which he stars as a father opposite Notes from the Underbelly‘s Rachael Harris — who plays his wife — and Childrens’ Hospital‘s Rob Huebel, who plays his brother-in-law. “It’s about an American family that’s trying to enjoy one another’s company and feeling the rush of kids growing up, the demands of job, the demands of life and making family memories.”

I assume this is a verbal quote and not written? “I would show up to Glee everyday.” Therefore, EW, seriously, get better writers. “Everyday” in this case should be TWO WORDS. Jesus Christ.

u have way too much time on your hands dude….

      • J.R.

Not really. Anyone who has a high school diploma should know the difference. No wonder EW’s readership is going down.

That being said, I’m so glad Burt isn’t going away!

@J.R. Okay — would love to know what stats you are using when you make the overly generalized statement that EW readership is going down?!!

I agree with you Matty. Unfortunately, the brightest people now skip print journalism as a career choice as they know that there’s no future in it.

ladies and gentlemen, the mayor of grammar town.

I don’t watch Glee, so I didn’t realize he was part of the cast. I just thought he was the guy who was embarrassing himself by shilling for Time Warner Cable.

  • Flip

So were is Jessalyn Gilsig? Is she only in 6 episodes this season?

    • Brett

I can’t believe some of you are still asking this question. They got DIVORCED and she has NO connection to anyone in the show anymore. I hope she doesn’t come back, there’s no getting around the fact that she lied about being pregnant…

  • Ma’at

WONDERFUL news. He is fantastic in this role.

“…dealing with Kurt potentially becoming more intimate with men.”

Can I just say ew? Kurt is not becoming intimate with men, he’s too young!

    • Cara

He’s the same age as all the other glee kids, and we’ve seen them all making out and heard them all talking about going further. Hello, Finn slept with Santana last season?

      • Flip

Not to mention Puck and Quinn have a child together!

      • steph

I think they were making the point of “men” versus “boys”,…none of the main glee guys on the show are “men” – they’re still boys.

  • Bella

He really is great in this role and I bet he’s enjoying the opportunity to stretch his wings as an actor, as he’s generally only played a fairly generic sidekick. He had a bit of a meatier part in Parenthood, though, although it only lasted a few episodes. Now that I’ve seen him on Glee, I’d probably be more likely to give Family Album a try, even though I would normally give it a pass.

There is something so sexy about Mike O’Malley. Am I the only one who’d love a scene of him the shower? Would love to see him topless!

    • claudenorth

Woof, as the kids say nowadays…

  • Brian

Can I just say – Mike O’Malley is frickin HOT!

  • Jeff from Jersy; ys New Jersey

He*s the Time Warner guy? Well, good for him and continued success.

  • Jon

So I guess he’s not the one who dies.

    • steph

      my money is on Pavarotti.

  • Crystal

He is such a good guy. Glad to hear he knows how important Burt is to Glee. Burt & Kurt are the heart of the show at most times and he and CC are so good together.

  • Esaul

This is seriously, and I mean seriously, wicked old news. -_-

  • Carol

I love this guy. Best dad on TV. I agree with Crystal. He and Colfer are amazing together.
