Fact-checking Charlie Sheen: Were the 'Men' scripts really not ready?

sheen-vs-lorreImage Credit: Glenn Harris/PR Photos; Chris Hatcher/PR PhotosAmong the various complaints that Charlie Sheen has lodged against Two and A Half Men creator Chuck Lorre — and boy, there have been plenty  – was the claim that the uber-writer/producer was never in a position to resume production on TV’s No. 1 comedy because he hadn’t written any new stories for the show. “Why is it that when I was ready to return to work, you told me there were no scripts ready to shoot?” Sheen said during this week’s interview with Today. It turns out, however, that like many of Sheen’s comments, that one wasn’t entirely grounded in reality.

The actor first made the comment after the Jan. 28 hiatus, when he claimed to have been ready for work after only a short time in rehabilitation. While Lorre isn’t doing any interviews, at least one insider has come to his defense in regards to the writer’s efforts on Men. During the February hiatus, Lorre — who not only had the future of Men to worry about but the livelihood of 300-some members of the show’s crew — dispatched some of his Men scribes to his other CBS shows, The Big Bang Theory and Mike & Molly, so they would be able to keep working while the issue with Sheen was resolved.

Once CBS and Warner Bros. TV announced that production would resume on Feb. 28, the Men scribes were back in business on a script involving Sheen’s character sleeping with another man, as reported by TV Line. But the show was put on ice yet again after Sheen went on his first bizarre radio rant. Now that production on Men has been halted for the rest of the season, some of the writers are expected to work on Theory and Molly until further notice.

So when, if ever, will Sheen see another Men script? That’s up to Lorre and Warner Bros. TV, which have to decide whether Sheen’s claims of sobriety can be believed and whether he’s capable of completing a ninth season. Though the actor is threatening a lawsuit and continuing to spew hatred toward Lorre, he’s made it clear in interviews that he wants to go back to work to “keep on making good television.” A decision could be made by May, when CBS presents its fall lineup to advertisers in New York.

You mean they actually WRITE new scripts? I thought they just always did the same script over and over…and over.

    • jill

      good one!

    • John

Yeah, you’re real clever, you are.

      • Val

Wasn’t trying to be clever, John. Just honest.

  • Jack Lean II

    Charlie Sheen is still alive?

    • Russ

How do role models get by with total disreguard of the law. Drugs are illigal but they seem to have endless supply and nobody bothers them when they are indulging. My thoughts are to tell them all to KMA.

      • Tom

Role model? Are you kidding? Have you ever watched the show? Do you know anything about Sheen’s Private life? A role model he never ever pretended to be.

      • rae

        this. one hundred percent this.

      • The Dude

Sheen is a Living Legend and role model to all young Kids out there. Rather than become a society robot slave he has decided to live the way he wants! Good on him I say.

      • Agent Smith

Athletes and actors are not role models. They are entertainers. Any person who regards them as role models is an intellectual lightweight, and any parent who fails to correct a child who holds this view is doing that child a grave disservice.

      • JL

        Dude gets it.
        Right on Dude

    2 & 1/2 men is America’s #1 comedy, right?
So, can somebody out there tell me they actually like this show, and why they like it?

I still have not met a single person in life that doesn’t think it is awful.
*DISCLAIMER: I am not a Charlie Sheen hater. Just a hater of bad TV shows that get watched by millions

    • Upyrs

I love the show. It makes me laugh dude.

    • Prunella Von Schleidlhaagen

The only person I actually know who likes the show is my best friend’s mother. Everyone else I know hates it.

      • Jamaaliver

Sooo…what does your friend’s mom look like?

    • Christina

I would guess this is because the people know know in “life” (and I’m assuming you mean REAL life, are interested in the likes of shows such as The Simpsons, Family Guy, and Jersey Shore … ?

      • Jay

uhm… no, no and HELL NO

way to go with your assumptions, buddy

    • Jim

This is the best show on earth! Yes Charlie makes the show and I laugh my ass off through the entire show. Anyone that dose not or has a problem with him, needs their head checked, get locked up, and please do not have kids. Charlie is a great roll model (less some of what he dose on his own time). He is a real man, a good sensible man. A true entertainer. The real problem is with most people under 40 years of age with their extremely poor attitude and work ethics. And then there are the churches that need to quietly go away. We need a lot more people like Charlie Sheen (less the drugs and other crap he dose). Remember no one is perfect including you. So if you don’t have anything good to say, be an adult and shut it.

      • Chuck

I agree with Jim. Sheen is the best! So what if he knocked his wife around – women are supposed to be seen, not heard. She probably said something stupid and deserved it. Who cares what he does in his won time? It’s none of your beeswax and if you are going to put your nose in other peoples business then be prepared for what you find.

        NOT. Jim = LAME

      • Jim

Hay Chuck. You are way out of line in your comments. Women are equal. A man has no right to in anyway hit or demean a woman and vice versa. You really need help if you think for a second that what you suggest is OK.

      • KDC

@ Jim- Reading your comment explains a great deal about those who enjoy the show and Sheen’s antics. PS– It is DOES not DOSE.

      • Denise

        Well said my friend…

    • John

This is a tremendous show the lines are completely outragous!!
I don’t know anyone that can sit through an episode without dying of laughter!

    • Seymour

I have always liked this show, it is one of the funniest Sit Com’s to come out of LaLa land since Seinfeld. But for me it is mostly because of Jon Cryer who IMO carries the show and is the one that most of the funniest gags are written for and not Charlie who thinks he is God’s gift to the world!

    • sock monkey

I asked my co-workers and friends, only 2 watch. Both are in their 50s and describe the show as clever and snappy. I’ve never even been tempted to watch, the ads are enough of a turn-off.

    • greg

Don’t tell me, you watch Friends, don’t you.

      • Steven

One of the highest rated and award nominated sitcoms of all time? Yes, because that was actually a funny and intelligent show. Unlike Men, which is just fart and poop jokes over and over again.

  • Joe Bell

This is a ridiculous story. Were you short on web material today? Maybe it’s just me but I’m still not sure if a script was “ready” or not. Lynette didn’t answer the question or is this another case of a misleading headline that doesn’t connect with the story.

    • Derek

I agree. She never answered the question. I want my time back.

    • ……….

It seemed evident dare I say obvious that a script would have been ready had Sheen returned.

  • Mateus Trigo

    I like this show.

    • Jay

      Really?! Why?
Do you actually laugh at it?

      • Jfarbs

Never cared for the show, and often have to endure it on United Airlines flights. Wwish they found a better vehicle for Ducky Drake. He’s the best part.

  • Geoff Henderson

No matter how “successful” the show I think it appalling that such an apparently flawed character can be the leading star in (any) show. I would not permit my children to watch the show without guidance – they need to understand that high profile Hollywood does not legitimize abhorrent behaviour and substance abuse.
If you call that an ethical argument, it will be interesting to see if the show resumes. If it does, it says much about the price of ethics in dollar terms, and something else about morality.

    • Newp

Ethics in this country means excepting charlie the way he is. You dont have to like him but just because you don’t live in the real world does not mean we should have to crawl in your shell with you. Plus your kids will be weak shelterd whiners ruining this country if they cant even watch some mildly racey tv. Honestly you can walk down any street in any city and see worse stuff than charlie has ever done. Im not talkin ghetto streets either. The same one you buy your groceries on. Least the unshelterd kids know not to honk their horns at the dealers when they blockin the street. Your kids dont have to worry about it though. Death is no punishment of you have never lived.

    • some guy

come on people without flaws are NOT funny to watch

    • uilleam

      yeah OK GEOFF

  • huh?

    “keep on making good television.”

Umm…when did Sheen actually start making good TV?

  • Charlie

Just another rich kid grown old and bitter–and without a clue as to just how good he has it.

  • Thom

Seriously, I have to agree. Horriblly misleading headline… trolling for page hits and I fell for it. Doesn’t even try to answer its own question. Shame on you.

  • JL

No scripts. Some work on only one script means no scripts.

Charlie Sheen is ready to work.

The show runner is in breech of coduct.
    So is WB and CBS.

Charlie will win the legal battle.

    Good for Charlie.

    JL

    • Zee

Ha,ha,ha, You are as delusional as Charlie! How can it be CBS and Warner’s fault when Charlie was the reason that the show was put on hold in the first place? This isn’t the first time either. The fact that this show is the highest rated Sit/Com currently airing says mountains about the mentality of “average Americans”. Charlie’s “art”/(Quality Television) as he calls it, is as Eddiefreddie mentioned, “Reality TV”. Charlie is playing himself! The only thing funny, is that they are getting away with it and raking in millions. Charlie is abviously out of his mind and needs serious help. As I see it, the show will not have a 9th season and will just go into syndication. Charlie will have to get used to a serious pay cut.

      • JL

Charlie will win this legal battle.
Dude way above here has it right.
        Way to go Dude.
        Right on.

  • eddiefreddie

    Script!

I thought this show was reality TV?

  • Mary

This article reads to me that what Charlie said was correct. Lorre’s writers were sent to beef up Big Bang and Molly scripts because the studio figured 2 1/2 men would be down for awhile and they needed those shows to fill the time. So 2 1/2 men was short of material.

    • ……….

“…the Men scribes were back in business on a script involving Sheen’s character sleeping with another man, as reported by TV Line.” How long do you think it takes to write this cr—stuff? They would have been ready for him, had he not shot off his mouth, and his foot too.

  • Newp

No one cares at all. Let the guy work. Incase you havent noticed 99 percent of our rich nd famous have drug problems. If its not in his contract to stay sober they can have nothing to say about it. Charlie will sue and he will win. Stay off his nuts md let him continue being more of a man than the majority of this castrated nation. Honestly stop making him into who you want him to be and accept his differences. That use to be what we as a country stood for. Now we condem differences as long as they are not about race or sex. Stop beimg so fake america.. Then your govt nd the world might take you seriously.

    • JM

Hey Newp, go back to school and learn how to spell. THAT’S if you can dress yourself and find the front door. You’re another example of why you’re country IS the U.S. of Mass Dillusions

      • Jim

At least Newp had something intelligent to say. That is more then what can be said for you. Being able to spell well has nothing to do with ones smarts. Ignorant people like you just need to shut it and learn from people like Newp and Charlie.

  • Redvector

Given Sheen’s bizzare behavior and threats against Lorre I just don’t see the show continuing. If Charlie keeps this up I don’t doubt that they’ll fire him.

  • Brian Wallace

    Newp,

Can you form a literate sentence? Are you developmentally disabled? Were beat as a child? (You should have been.) “Castrated nation?” “The world might take you seriously?”

You have no idea what it is to be a man, Newp. And you NEVER will. Get that? NEVER! You’ll always be the same, uneducated, working class piece of **** you always are and always will be.

What color is the sky in your world, “Newp?”

    Brian

    • Jim

At least Newp had something intelligent to say. That is more then what can be said for you. Being able to spell well has nothing to do with ones smarts. Ignorant people like you just need to shut it and learn from people like Newp and Charlie. At leats they are men, something you are not
