'Off the Map' renewal: '50/50' says co-star

off-the-mapImage Credit: Mario Perez/ABCRatings for Shonda Rhimes’ latest medical drama Off the Map aren’t exactly off the map: The ABC drama is averaging 6.5 million viewers and a mere 2.2 rating/6 share in adults 18-49.

But Jason George, who plays Dr. Otis Cole, doesn’t think it’s time to declare a time of death for the freshman series just yet. “The funny part is that right now we’re really riding that 50-50 shot,” he told EW. “When I talked to the producers of the show, they think things are in our favor and that we’ve done better in this time slot than shows have in the last three or four years or something like that. But the other part is you talk to some folks, and some people naturally protect themselves by assuming that things will go poorly so that they’ll be happily surprised when they go well. I try to be a little more objective.

“I’m hopeful,” he continued. “I would really love to see us come back. When people hit me on Facebook or whatever and are like, ‘Hey, is it looking good?’ It’s like you’re either an out-of-the box hit the first day you arrive, like Lost, or you’re canceled on arrival. And 5 percent of the shows are out-of-the-box hits, 5 percent are canceled on arrival, and 90 percent of shows, which is where we are, ride the bubble. And it’s all on how the fans respond, you know. Like, hit ABC.com!”

Right now, we’ve got Off the Map in the danger zone on our prime time scorecard – and we don’t see that changing. What do think, Shondaland fans? Is Off the Map worth saving? — With reporting from Sandra Gonzalez

I LOVE THIS SHOW! I hope it stays around, I think they have developed the characters at a great pace and are leaving a lot open for potential story lines without giving everything away in the first season. I think it needs another season to truly come into its own and not be lumped in as a “Grey’s Anatomy in the jungle”, because it’s not. KEEP OFF THE MAP!

    • Fran

agree. This show is growing on me. Keep it!

      • Danny (Hometeam)

Love show too, story/characters growing nicely and hope to see more. Jason George/Otis – great, great actor

I really like this show, and it proves that time and time again ABC can put something together that captures attention and excites the imagination.

But ABC has had a nasty reputation in the last couple of years of putting up shows they optioned from the bargain bin (meaning someone else foots the tab for production) that were really large by scale, and promptly failed to properly promote it to make a profit… then they toss it in the trash after it has filled their schedule according to their needs.

So I am 50/50 as I really like it and won’t hold my breath on ABC keeping it around.

The show is not averaging 6.5 million. It got in the 4 million range the last two episodes and a 1.8 in the demo.

    The show is gone.

  • Paula

This is one of my favorite shows. I think the casting is good and there is a good mix of characters.

I like it, but anything has to be better than The Whole Truth. Plus, with Detroit 187 and My Generation, ABC hasn’t been blowing me out of the water with their new one hour dramas this season. Of all the premieres so far, this is the only one I actually watch.

Is Rachelle LeFevre still a regular on this show? Because I read that she was cast as the lead in a new NBC show. That’s not a good sign if she’s still one of the main characters on Off the Map. (Sorry, I haven’t kept watching it.)

    • lefty

Her character is going to go to NYC for a heart transplant on the show…

    • Rachel

Not quite – her character is about to jet off to NYC for some medical treatment herself, so I wouldn’t be surprised if she was never intended to stick around.

    • Diva

Well the actor who plays Ben Keeton also just signed onto the same pilot as his co-star, Rachelle Lavevre (Dr. Ryan Clark) so they’re making back up plans.

    • Johnification

I think these pilots are considered “in second position”. So basically, they stay on Off the Map, and if it’s cancelled AND the series’ get picked up, they move to the new shows. If Off the Map survives AND the new shows get picked up, then the new shows will have to recast.

  • Shane

I love the show. The past three episodes have shown HUGE writing and performance improvement. And Martin Henderson…………well……….
    total yumminess!!!!!!!!
I just hope they do not put Keeton with anyone but the wonderful Dr Clark!!

    • Hillary

he just signed onto another pilot.

  • Rachel

I love this show, I really do. I hope they keep it, because I really want to see what happens with the 3 new docs!! Jason George is amazing, too

  • Lisa

They’ll lose me as soon as they lose Rachelle LeFevre

  • Dave

Off the Map has been doing worse than V lately. If ABC renews this and cancels V, I’ll be pissed. ABC has enough crappy medical dramas from Shonda Rhimes.

  • johnc

This is the worst medical show on TV right now!

It should be taken off air. Period!

  • WendyE

Please renew this show! It’s the first show I’ve gotten into after Lost!

  • pfitz

Do I love this show? No. But do I like it a LOT more than Private Practice? Absolutely.

  • B

I’ve been enjoying Off the Map more than I expected. I hope it stays on.

  • John

This show is a welcome break from your typical medical show. Reminds me of the old Going to Extremes which didn’t last very long. It seems like if it isn’t a stupid reality show, cop, lawyer, or quirky comedy you can’t survive. Stop getting rid of creative shows and get rid of some the reality garbage.

    • JACKIE

I’m with you here, John. Some reality shows with human interest and positive outcome have their place. The ones that “air dirty laundry” should be pay-per-view. OFF THE MAP is both educational and entertaining. The lead characters are all different personalities and the same as people we know in our real lives. True, this is a medical drama. But, not just another medical drama. These doctors have medical, physical and social challenges that I find intriguing each week. I’m hoping the show continues and continues to improve.

      • sammantha

i love this show so mush plzzzzzzzzzzzzz dnt cancel it abc

    • Trudy

Absolutely agree with John, take some of the reality shows off Just NOT BIGGEST LOSER.I can tell you I rush home from work on Wednesday nights just to watch this show it is the greatest they show some pretty gory stuff it’s great and having to use what you have for surgeries, like a punch for anesthesia it’s fantastic please don’t cancel.Quit with the Charlie Sheen stuff leave Off The Map On TV!

    • Marisa

I agree with John. I have never gotten into the “reality” show buzz and wish they were never on. I have watched my share of cop and lawyer shows but have had enough. I thoroughly enjoyed OTM and don’t watch TV at all on Wed’s without it now. I wish they would bring it back, but I won’t hold my breath. It seems that if I like a show it is doomed to be canceled. I guess my demografic doesn’t count.
