First Look: Nickelodeon unveils 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

For now, they’re still just a mutation in process, but that’s no reason you can’t enjoy the first glimpse of Nickelodeon’s new and improved Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The cable network has greenlit 26 half-hour episodes for late 2012, and EW has the exclusive first look at the four heroes in a half-shell: Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael, and Leonardo. Nickelodeon promises this version of the franchise will be “funnier and ninja-ier,” and from the look of fierce concentration on these turtles’ faces, they seem a little tougher than previous incarnations — the last of which went off the air in 2009. Check ‘em out below:

How does the animation look, PopWatchers? Would Master Splinter approve?

  • …And By Ironic I Mean Completely Ronic

April was a hot babe on the early 90’s version!

    • Rod

This looks like a fake trailer on youtube that someone fabricated in their basement on their 486… Sadly enough it’s real…

  • Looney Tune

    COWABUNGA!!!1

  • alex

    nope.. sorry.

    • Larry

oh man they have run out of original ideas in this town.. that’s for sure.

  • Eli

    Looks pretty cool

  • Ian

Reminds me of the TMNT movie from (I think) 2005.

Neat designs and style to the show, hopefully the stories are as good as they were in the recently concluded series.

    • cl

      It was 2007.

      • JT

        Nobody remembers, nor cares.

  • Temp

I hope its funnier and fun! I have fond memories of all the ancillary characters of the original 80’s toon. Casey Jones, Yojimbo, The frogs, Baxter, Leatherhead (I guarontee!!) Ace Duck. It would be cool to see them again!

Though I honestly had no clue this show existed past 1993. So maybe those characters were all in the other more recent versions of TMNT?

    • Anon

Unlike the old carton, the newer cartoon was based on the comic.

Casey, Leatherhead, Baxter, and Usagi Miyamoto all appeared. Though they were closer to their comic counterparts then the original cartoon.

No one is really sure if this show will be closer to the comic or the original cartoon yet. I’d really enjoy a mix of both.

      • Whoa

You, uh…wow, you really know your ninja turtles…

      • TMNT FAN

That’s why he/she posted as Anon.

      • jcfrk4lfe

There’s nothing wrong with actually knowing what you’re talking about when you post on a comment board.

      • Anon

i am petty certain Casey was in the 2003 series

  • Buddymoore

This looks horrible. I hate this new style, they need to go back to the original animation.

    • CC

I completely agree. This is gross. I miss actual animation instead of all this CGI crap. I mean…the Smurfs, Alvin and the Chipmunks… they’re ruining my childhood with these recreations that look AWFUL!

      • Jobbeybob

Ugh, get your prejudiced ass out of here. They don’t care about YOUR childhood, because YOU’VE GROWN UP. They are worried about making NEW cartoons for the NEW GENERATION. Don’t go “Oh, CGI is so bad because it’s not what I grew up with…” which is really just like another form of racism.

      • Inooblmao

you’re kidding me or what? what are you? 7?

      • shawn

actually 3d animation is easier to produce and is replacing the old platform of traditional 2d animation, which sucks because its lacking in quality and soul, 3d can only go so far, and in my eyes It doesn’t beat a drawing. I care because animators and the industry is getting too lazy and relying on computers to do everything! This new series is probably gonna suck ass, good cartoons are hard to come by these days!

      • Aaron

Horrible What’s with April a 16 year old little girl that random gap In don’s teeth and being the tallest and why is splinter taller than all the turtles nick doesnt know jack about tmnt

  • Chris

I grew up with tmnt since they started out in comic books, I am sorry to say but this new incarnation looks as bad as the live action series fox did with the turtles n added a girl turtle that made it worse, please change the style to maybe a bit more Anime like avatar the last air bender. Thank you

    • MarkyMark

      Avatar wasn’t Anime.

      • Me

        say hi to your mother…

      • Aric

It was certainly in an anime style -no matter what country it was made in. You know what he meant.

      • jasen

ill be the firs to say it, anime IS STUPID, if its not going to be a live action, or a live action with some CGI. or drawn like teh old cartoon’s. dont do it, the TMNT movie that was all CGI blew.
i miss the old cartoons, now days everythign is either full cg or anime. and i hate you all for helping those 2 ideas take foot hold.
screw you anime fans, screw you t(‘.’)t

      • Voodoo

@jasen, nothing wrong with the “real”, Japanese anime, it’s the fake wannabe ones. Anime can be quite good and original (I’m not talking about the 2536th Pokemon installment). And technically speaking, a lot of cartoons from the 80s and early 90s were anime too since they were made in Japan. Still, I miss them just as much as you do.

    • SAYwut

WHAT!? They added a female ninja turtle!!! That is absolutely ridiculous!

      • mitchell

I always thought it was just leo, don, ralph,&mikey I thought pr in space (power rangers) were just kidding around since I was born in 1995 I never about the fifth turtle sorta like tarzan (the missing link).

  • Champaign

    lame.

  • Amanda

So they gave a naganata (bladed spear) instead of a bo to the pacifist, and a kusuri-gama to the peace-keeping, good natured goofball? Yeah, I’m really not happy with these more ‘edgy’ (literally) changes.

    • Melanie

At least I’m not the only one who was annoyed by that…

      • Weasle

Whyyyyyyyyyyyy? Do they not even get WHO the turtles are and WHAT they’re each about?
I’m not really looking forward to this… esp. if there is no Master Splinter. And yes, I’ve liked them since the original black and white flimsy paper first one came out.

    • Amanda-Call-me

You’re a girl and you know about Japanese martial arts?! Will you marry me?!

    • intern

Each turtle will use weapons that are related to their primary. Mikey will have other soft weapons Donny will use different Bo and spear weapons. They wanted to add more to the characters but still stay true.

    • ninja from the 80s

I agree lets keep the show to true form

    • mrbilliam

I like the idea of them using different ninja weapons, but when you have a cartoon character with a bladed weapon, the problem is that the character is not allowed to actually HIT anyone with that weapon. Then you get scenarios like in the second live-action movie, where Leonardo stabs his swords into the ceiling so he can swing off the handles and kick someone: it makes very little sense.

      • WingsStef

“Now you see them now. Now you don’t” And then you never see them again. LOL

    • DeRosset

I guess they want everyone to have a blade now. What mrbilliam posted makes sense though. Then again, I guess they could also use the non-sharp edges when they fight humans and animals.

    • ADHadh

I don’t remember Mikey being very “peace-loving”; he maybe wasn’t as eager to fight as Raph, but I don’t think he has ever made a pacifist statement either.
Oh, and none of them was a pacifist in the original comic, which started with quite a slaughter.

    • Abby

Yeah it annoys the heck out of me, they had their weapons for a reason, they match their personalities.
I am a huge TMNT fan but I don’t think I will be enjoying this series :(

    • spyke

my thoughts exactly luckily I’ve got the 2003 series to comfort my woes… and after Thundercats returned i figured this was a good idea.

  • harry

    awesome!!

  • Eli

    Bring back Wingnut and Screwloose!

    • Bob

Thank you very much for your kind words, Moa! The second part of DE will revael more clues into Donatello’s future stay tuned! -Matthew

  • Melnutz

Really, that’s the best Nickelodeon can come up with???
Meaner, Darker and Edgier versions of the Turtles. Everything from my childhood is getting raped & bilged.
But honestly, if it ain’t broken, don’t to fix it.

    • Venom

Obviously you’ve never read the comics. The Turtles originally were mean, dark, and edgy.

      • xjustmyluckx

Exactly! The original TMNT was extremely violent. These “old” turtles that everyone says they miss and want back were nothing like the original concepts. I tried to go back and watch the early 90’s cartoon and it completely ruined my memories of them.

      • Jason

In the original splinter didn’t train them to be super heroes he trained them to flat out assassinate Oroko Saki, a man they had never met and had never done them any harm.

      • inoobfarta

        @xjustmyluckx
Maybe youre just too dumb to understand it.

      • Anon

No but Oroko Saki did assassinate one of his clan members, which was punishable by death, and since they were raised to be part of said clan, it was still their obligation to do so.

  • Michael Sacal

    I’m going to puke.

  • Blazord

Could have been done better. Looks like one of the video games.
