'American Idol' helps 'Bones' beat 'CSI' in ratings

American Idol had its lowest-rating performance of the season, yet still had enough fire to dominate Thursday night and boost Bones into beating CSI.

Idol drew 21.7 million viewers and a 6.5 rating in the adult demo. (Fox likes to do year-over-year comparisons for Idol, and points out the show is retaining 96 percent of its numbers when you look at the full week from this time last year.)

Bones (10.9 million, 3.4) was up a tick from its last original and bested CSI (13.6 million, 3.1), despite the CBS crime show rising 15 percent. In fact, with NBC, ABC, and The CW in repeats, CBS grew nearly across the board, with Big Bang Theory (12.1 million, 3.8), Rules of Engagement (9.5 million, 2.8), and The Mentalist (14.4 million, 3.0).

    And “CSI” was a rerun.

    • No

      It wasn’t.

  • Danny

Please cancel “CSI”. The writing is terrible. A few weeks ago they ripped off “Fringe” with the wacky scientist that brings back the dead. That episode also ripped off the old movie “Flatliners”. About a month ago they ripped off the great Japanese movie “Audition”. They are stealing ideas. A clear sign of lazy writing. Please cancel “CSI”, “CSI:Miami”, and “CSI:NY”.

    • Of course!

Let’s ignore the consistently high ratings, meaning people are watching, and cancel the shows. Because Danny says so.

      • Tania

CSI is a lame, dying show.

  • Crys

I would also keep in mind that HH’s like mine have had all CBS Programming premempted due to the coverage of the ACC BBall Tourney. Which may have something to do with they ratings in some areas.

Danny, if they’ve done anything, they’ve done homages to those films, not ripped them off. Please stop whining. CSI is still at the top of it’s game. But, yes, only Miami needs to go. Sela Ward has given NY a much needed boost of sunshine.

Oh, and by the way, if any show needs to pull the plug it’s “American Idol”

    • Kev

I disagree, any show with those ratings in it’s tenth season clearly is doing something right.

Great news! Bones is a great show and I was one of those viewers.

  • Sue1

I was one of those viewers too, and I did not watch American Idol. Bones deserves to be given credit for achieving it’s ratings on it’s own.

Bones has 10.9 millions viewers while CSI has 13.6. How could Bones beat CSI in rating?

    • John N.

EW is referring to the adult demo (3.4 for Bones vs 3.1 for CSI) and not the total viewers.

BONES is a very good show. Further proof that Boreanez can do most anything and still find an audience. He’s been in our living rooms for a lot longer than many who get more press. Besides, who can deny that the primary relationship in that show is in the same league with Castle and Moonlighting? There’s just something about crimefighter love stories that plays well on TV.
