'Fringe' returns steady; 'Defenders' finale airs

After staying off the air for a week, Fox’s cult favorite bubble show Fringe returned Friday night to match its previous original rating.

Fringe was seen by 3.8 million viewers and had a 1.5 preliminary adults 18-49 rating.

Over on CBS, Defenders (9 million, 1.5) finished out its run steady with last week, and gives CBS a tough call — a 1.5 might get a Friday drama renewed on Fox, which has long struggled to program the evening, but this is below the line for what CBS is normally willing to accept on a night it generally wins. (Then again, that line is always moving, isn’t it?) Blue Bloods (11.8 million, 1.9), however, should have no trouble coming back, along with lead-in CSI: NY (11 million, 2.0) — both won their hours. But Defenders was topped by Fox’s Kitchen Nightmares (4.1 million, 1.7) at 8 p.m. Repeats and news magazines dominated the other broadcast nets.

go CSI: NY!! And on what was called (maybe not rightly) a d/l centric episode. Love Danny and Lindsay when they worked together!! bring back two case episodes!!

If Fringe is renewed, I’d put money on their numbers doubling in the next season. You’ll get new people tuning in to see what all the hubbub was about.

Hope you’re right. A lot of people who might like FRINGE are probably leery of making the commitment to catch up on back episodes and previous seasons when it’s a 50/50 shot to be cancelled at the end of this season. If FOX would give it a full-season renewal now, and rerun season 3 over the summer, I too think the ratings would soar. Not holding my breath, however.

I hope that Defenders get a renewal. It is a better show than Blue Bloods which started out well but has become a preachy mess in recent weeks. At least Defenders is fun to watch, while the only good scenes in Blue Bloods are the few with Tom Selleck.

      Defenders sucks, bring back Firefly!!!

      • Leithen

While I agree about the Defenders, I think it’s time to give up the Firefly ghost. Fillion seems pretty happy doing Castle (which is actually a pretty fun show), and the others have all moved on. I’m happy we got any Firefly at all. If it comes back at all, then make another movie.

Sam, you’re right about The Defenders. It’s good entertainment, unlike Blue Bloods which is just tedious. Save The Defenders!

Defenders is a cartoon. Tried watching a few episodes.

      • Bobbo

Theres the problem; FOX needs to check the ratings on Finge.

        Sorry…I’m a wiseass.

      • Trenton

I honestly wish Fox would just make a decision. Fringe will always get between 4-5 million viewers. That is its demo, so please fox just say yes or no and quit making fans fret.

    • Jasmine

      Me too!

    • Woot

I really want to watch it, but I haven’t gotten through season 1 yet. Not a lot of time. Great show so far, hope it gets renewed.

Give Defenders a chance CBS, it’s a good show with great actors, and is very entertaining. I believe if the closing arguments in the end evoked more emotion, it may gain momentum faster, however, it will catch on, give it at least one more season!

    • David

I agree with you liz! Defenders is a very entertaining show and there’s too little of that on TV these days.

  • liz

Oh, and FRINGE… LOVE IT! This one is a keeper!

  • darclyte

Fringe is the type of cutting edge, high concept, the producers are always 3 steps ahead of you series that DESERVES to be on the air. Defenders is a lame rehash of a tired old concept that just fills airtime. Jerry O’Connell deserves better. Jim Belushi should join a sitcom as a secondary character like the buddy, neighbor, co-worker, or boss of the star.

    • TE1

On FRINGE: Hear, hear! Unpredictable, enjoyable, characters to care about – what’s not to love? Renew it already!

    • AltDave

FOX should have an ad campaign along the lines of “If you liked X-FILES, you will go apesh!t for FRINGE!” There is no good reason that FRINGE should not garner even better ratings than X-FILES ever did; better writing, better cast, better concept, and obviously a clear roadmap of where the show is going! And I dearly loved X-FILES.

  • Gwen

The Defenders is a wonderful lighthearted legal show and Belushi is wonderful in it. Please keep this show!!!

I have been watching Fringe since the beginning and it has only gotten better and better. I hope and pray that Fox continues to believe in it.

  • Big D

    Please Fox renew Fringe!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • di

Love the Defenders and Fringe They need to be renewed. They are good, solid, smart television.

  • KC

Fox, stand above and beyond the rest! Recognize that you’ve got an amazing show in Fringe and renew it.

  • ollie

Didnt know till now that was the defenders finale(thanks alot cbs for that heads up/ not). Cbs needs to renew it. Its great excapasim and fun. Jerry and jim have great chemistry playing off each other.

  • ollie

And the actresses who play zoe and lisa(blanking on their names). They just add to it too.

  • crivera

    RENEW FRINGE ALREADY….WTF!!!!!!!!!????????

  • melanie

Fringe is going to get renewed if the numbers hold steady, and the numbers are holding steady. So just go out and enjoy your Saturday. The Abrams community can show the internet that there’s a better way for sci-fi fans to get a show picked up. Watch it live. Tell your friends about the show. Stare at a picture of J.J. for a minute every morning and repeat to yourself, “Every day in every way, I will be as cool as J.J.” It’s going to work! There’s going to be a season four!

    • TE1

“Every day in every way, I will be as cool as J.J.”

That’s so cool, melanie – that could work! Love it. And FRINGE. And J.J. I might even love FOX if-
