'The Office': Director Paul Feig on Steve Carell's 'very emotional' last episode

Steve Carell’s final bow on The Office won’t air until a little more than a month from now, but the episode’s director, Paul Feig, who just wrapped filming last week, is already warning that the audience should prepare for an emotionally-charged episode.

“We were exhausted by the end of that week. You thought you’d stop being sad or stop being emotional, but every scene was, ‘Oh, we just did the last conference room’ or ‘Oh, we just did the last talking head.’ So it was pretty wild,” he told EW at PaleyFest’s salute to Freaks & Geeks and Undeclared Saturday night.

Even the show’s veteran cast had trouble controlling themselves as they bid farewell to their fearless leader. “Everybody was kind of in a state of suspended animation. Everyone kinda knew and [was] pretending it wasn’t happening, but then we were rehearsing a scene with the accounting department, and all of a sudden Angela Kinsey just sort of burst into tears. She was like, ‘This is my last scene with you.’ And we all kind of immediately snapped out of it, pretended it didn’t happen, and we went back and started doing it,” he said. “But they had a great send off for him at the end. It was very emotional.”

The episode airs April 28.

Steve Carell is a comedic genius and a class act. The Office will miss him greatly as will America. Thanks for all the laughs!!!

    • Tim

      Winning!!!!

    • amie

Well said Tiffani, Steve is brillant and he will be missed.

      • amie

whoops *brilliant* Steve yes, me not so much :p

      • Serenity is one of the Greatest movies this century

no he won’t, Nathan Fillion will be missed from Firefly, Steve Carrell and the Office sucks

      • Beepela

Hey Serenity Troll, I feel safe to assume that the people who say he will be missed will miss him, so yes, he will be missed, just not by you. So stop being a jerk and leave. You will not be missed.

      • murley

wow, way to give fans of firefly and serenity a bad name! i love both and steve carrell will be missed by millions, me included. he is a true class act and a revolutionary comedian.

    • RT

I hate to be the one to break it to you but he never was funny. I’m guessing you also think Two and Half Men was one of the funniest shows ever.RT

      • Deena

        Why are you here?

      • Jeremy Sheer

dont like the office dont comment troll

      • NAM

Why troll this blog? Go pull wings off of flies and leave the people that like the Office and Steve Carrell alone. BULLIES Geesh

    • UncleWalty

agreed. Steve Carell is irreplaceable as Michael Scott. NBC should cancel the show and go out gracefully.

  • Jon r

The Office was the greatest sitcom ever! The reason was the talented Steve Carell. I honestly don’t know how the Office will do without him. Steve Carell is the Office. Steve Carell is comedy. Steve Carell is going to be missed.

    • Jeremy DC

You’re right, it is the best ever. We are talking about the original British version, right? The first five seasons of American version were really good but the past couple have been awful.

      • Matt

Let’s not even pretend that a show that is only 12 episodes long was the best sitcom ever. I’m not saying the U.S. version was the best ever, but come on, have people already forgotten about Seinfeld or Cheers?

      • Crystal

Let’s not even pretend that you’re judging whether a show is “the best” or not based on the fact that it only had 12 episodes. Something doesn’t have to go on for a decade or more to be considered “the best.” Quality is more important that Quantity.

    • Shawn

I wouldn’t even rank ‘The Office’ among the top funniest sitcoms that are currently on TV…and I’m a fan. So best of all time? Don’t know about that.

      • Well….

        To each his own dude.

  • Madison

OFFICE EQUALS THE GREATEST COMEDIC TEAM EVER!!!!!

    • D’s Advocate

      Slow down there.

    • Shawn

      Arrested Development. End of discussion.

      • coco

preach. u r the only truth teller on this board

      • Jeff

Shawn – Please. Arrested Development? I am so tired of hearing that show was amazing. I know comedy is subjective but to me, I think people build that up as this great show because it is cool to be on the under-dog side but I never found it funny and I am really tired of hearing it. I know on the internet it is bad to say this too but another overrated show is “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”. I live in Philly and can’t stand that show.

      • shawnuel

“Shawn’s” like Arrested Development. This one liked Freaks and Geeks an awful lot, as well.

  • Jen E.

I’ve been an Office fan since the pilot and at first I was glad to hear that it would continue despite Steve Carell’s exit. But my husband and I started watching our DVD set while we work out and seeing the show every day has made me realize how “Michael Scott” makes it perfect. I’m not sure how it’ll be able to continue without Steve’s talent!

  • Ethan

    Dear Charlie Sheen,

Steve Carell is a class act comedian worth his money. America supports and loves him. Take a lesson!

    • Charlie Sheen

      Dear Ethan,

Thank you for your note. However, based on the ratings of both my show and my recent interviews, it would appear America actually supports and loves me. Probably why I make more money taking a dump than NBC pays Steve Carrell for a sitcom that can’t beat Gay’s Anatomy in the ratings (No, that wasn’t a typo). If ratings for The Office drop without Steve, no one will notice. Let’s see how Two and a Half Men does without me. Winning!

      • Emilio Estevez

You & me have been doing DAMN well lately!

      • Emilio Estevez

I know it’s a long shot, but if this is really you. C, please listen to your brother. I was at Denise’s house. As soon as she put kids to bed we talked about you. She told me that she “misses” the “old” you. You know the guy who embarrassed himself at the wedding forgetting the wows, the guy who loved his kids more than anything else in the world, the guy who told her every day how much he loved her, and you know the guy whom she fell in love with. Entire family misses that guy. Why aren’t you answering our calls? Just talk to mom and dad already. Miss the bro whom I had a blast filming Men at Work-Love ya, Emilio.

      • Jack Bauer

Lets see how much money you make when no one in Hollywood or on TV wants to lay a finger on you. Are you finding it hard to crawl out of that pathetic hole you’ve dug yourself? You dug it trying to keep yourself in the limelight, and for a while people actually cared. But no more ‘warlock.’ People have grown tired of you’re pathetic act and so have I. Go waste someone elses time, because you have wasted your last reserves with me. Steve Carell is staring in movies now. Remind me again what you are in besides the news? So drink your tiger blood and stay with your ‘goddesses.’ At the end of the day you are still a hallow, narcissistic troll who no one cares about anymore.

      • CTU

Terrorists just attacked New York. 100 casualties. CTU requires your assistance!

Did you really think you can get out? ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

      • tnsmoke

I have all 6 seasons of The Office on dvd and watch them when there is nothing on current tv (which is often). Steve Carrel was a master playing Michael Scott. He gave Michael a child-like wonder and the core of his being was merely to be loved. The expressions of love he gives Holly are amazing and I will cry when his last episode runs. I want The Office to continue because I love all the office co-workers. Was hopine Will Arnett would take over but I see he’s back on 30 Rock as Devin on the 24th.

      • miss k

Really just LOLed my butt off at Jack Bauer and CTU. That was great guys.

      • Color Me Impressed

@CTU: Hahahahahahahaha!!!!!! That was THE best comment of the day! Also, I am so sick of this “winning” business. I now officially declare the phrase “winning” to be an epic fail.

      • Steve Carell

        I am a troll.

      • Porn Goddess #16

Oh and you really think you’re all that Mr. Winner-Winner-Chicken-Dinner? Let me tell you what, as soon as your money and dope supplies dry up-which they will when you realize that no ones giving you any work anymore-I’m gonna be leaving your a$$, and me and all your other “friends” are gonna be moving on. Just to let you know.

      • The REAL Charlie Sheen

I have an announcment to make: I am running for President. Yes my beloved people, it is time to rejoice! Soon EVERYONE will realize how much they love me and if they want to win, they better get behind me, because I will blink and cure all the worlds problems! You have my word on that one.

      • @ Color Me Impressed

You mean “winning” is a tired expression… just like “epic fail” is?

      • Color Me Impressed

Yeah I know “epic fail” has been done to death, but everyone I know still uses it in a kindof post-ironic sense, and I still think its kindof cool. “Winning” has been around for a week and I’m already sick of it.

      • Juke Early

Carlos – Based on the last year or so I think the cast of Lucas was cursed. Especially that cute chick’s career. WTF happened?!…

    • Kris Jenner

What did I tell you about posting comments on EW? Move your ass, you have money shot in about an hour! Love, mom.

  • Sharlin

Steve Carell is a nice person, I’m sure. However, I hated the character of Michael Scott and I for one am so glad he is leaving!

    • Steven

      DITTO!

    • barb

      im with you Sharlin.

  • Justin

While I’m sad to see Michael Scott leave,I got 2 words for you Office Fans…Will Ferrell. With the end in sight, the producers are pulling out all the stops.Word on the street is that Ricky Gervais will reprise his classic David Brent character in a 4-5 episode stint toward the end of the series finale.

    • Pissed of boyfriend

      Go back to Canada!

  • jk

The show should end. I love The Office, but it won’t be The Office without Steve Carell. You could lose Pam, Jim or Dwight, and the show could survive, but not without Michael Scott.

    • ILoveZacLevi

naww the show can’t survive without Dwight!

  • Dylan

This is one of the most overrated, boring, stupid sitcoms ever. It makes FRIENDS look like genius comedy. “Prepare for an emotional sendof.” F you. I’m sure there will be losers crying everywhere.

    • Scott

It’s always nice to see somebody get on their high horse about something being stupid and being unable to spell “send off” correctly.

    • Julian

Big party tonite, lot’s of puss. Alysaa offered a three way. Call, DM.

    • Color Me Impressed

@Julian: Julian Casablancas, is that you?

  • wow

    Hey Sandra G.
Did you used to write for my high school newspaper? “…stop being sad or stop(being)emotional.” and “…but then were were filming the…” Slow down or read before you publish.

  • john brogan

i agree with dylan . The show has rarely brought the funny,

    • Casey

Oh it has been funny, even at times this season it has been. But its heyday is over.

  • Megan

I can’t believe all the hate on here! The Office is quite literally one of the greatest comedies of all time. Those of you who think otherwise obviously haven’t taken the time to watch it.

    • Suzi

I AGREE WITH MEGAN..THE OFFICE IS GOING TO MISSED. I AM HOPING THERE ARE RE-RUNS. BELIEVE ME, I WILL WATCH THE SHOW, EVERY TIME THAT I CAN!

  • hypothesis

i bet you Michael Scott transfers to Nashua (spelling?) to be with Holly when Toby returns. They haven’t set up too much to indicate him quitting right out, but they’ve touched on her having to leave eventually…this seems to make the most sense, and that way he’s still around in spirit in the dunder mifflin/sabre universe.

    • tnsmoke

Michael is a Regional Manager and can’t just transfer to another city. What would he do, be a salesman? Holly and Michael will both leave Dunder Mifflin and Michael will persue a career in comedy. Holly will be pregnant.

      • hypothesis

why can’t he? theoretically he could just replace the existing regional manager at another branch. it’s a fictional universe, i’m pretty sure they can do whatever they want.

    • Isaac Newton

Shut up. I created you, and I can also destroy you! Charlie Sheen is Winning!

  • david brent

    Piss off all of you!

    • Gareth

      Where’s oggy?

  • EJ

“Winning” means not only winning money wise, but integrity wise. It means your cast and crew love and have respect for you. Steve Carell equals “winning” big time.
