You may not have heard this before: Extreme Makeover is getting a spinoff. And you definitely have not heard this: The new series has a premiere date.

Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition documents the radical physical changes of “super obese” people (roughly 200 pounds or more overweight) who set out to lose half their body weight over the course of a full year. Each of the eight one-hour episodes will show a person going through a truly extreme transformation that has never been attempted for a reality TV series: Compressing a year’s worth of diet and exercise into a single hour.

Trainer Chris Powell (TLC’s The 650-Pound Virgin) will coach each of the eight participants through their transformation process, with 3 Ball Productions/Eyeworks USA producing.

The show will debut on ABC on Monday, May 30 at 10 p.m., running after The Bachelorette (and for those who missed it, EW broke the news this morning that both The Bachelor and The Bachelorette have been renewed).

I wonder if this newest variation of Extreme Makeover will bring us full circle back to the original which was all about plastic surgery. If someone loses over 200 lbs, excess skin removal needs to be a discussion point.

    • Rock Golf

Uhhh… Isn’t this what Extreme Makeover was originally?
Sans the plastic surgery, that is.

      • Flip

        That’s exactly what Andre said.

      • Kirsten

        Sorry, but reading comprehension fail

      • claudenorth

Can we please have a moratorium on this whole “fail” business? (Not to mention “epic fail” and “winning”…)

    • Rock Golf

What next? Law & Order: New York but Not Special Victims Unit?

    • Jo

I really liked the extreme makeover that included plastic surgery,so I think the two makeovers combined would be awesome!

  • Chris

I can’t believe this crappy show is still on.

  • McProphet

I miss the original show about making horribly unnatractive people more visually tolerable. I hate the Home Edition one. Why do people need million dollar homes just because their kid is in a wheelchair? I work two jobs just to make ends meet and no one is even offering to pay the mortgage just for even one month!

    • Meg

Agreed! Also add to the list–why do people who adopt more children than their house can hold need million dollar homes? I’m all for adoption, but seriously; adopt within your means.

      • Flip

Ooh, I smell a new Hoarders: Children Edition!!

      • Michelle

        LMAO @ Flip

      • who cares

its especially funny when these people lose the homes that are built for them because they can’t afford the taxes. now thats good tv!

    • Bluto

I agree—I think Home Edition should be a special event show, because they basically do the same thing in every episode and it’s gotten old and stale. Besides, some of the makeovers they do make zero sense: who needs a television “wall” or a $100K ultra modern kitchen in a house that is in a depressed neighborhood?

      • Des

Extreme makeover started with a good premise nad that was to make create safe and decent housing for those who were in need. When they were just refurbishing the homes makeing them safe. They have gone overboard with all the extras. What they do for one family could provide practically a whole block of homes with modest housing…now that I would love to see.

  • alex

Isn’t this already being done on A&E for the past view months; it’s called Heavy. Nothing new. Just a rip off of shows on NBC and A&E.

  • Redvector

There’s a reason why the original Extreme Makeover show was canceled, it was boring.

    • Reena

Actually the original one was canceled b/c people thought it was sending the wrong message..i.e. plastic surgery is the answer…to which I say BRING IT BACK! Loved watching the makeovers…also bring back the SWAN and my world will be complete LOL

    • LIVEITUP

It was actually cancelled because a woman who auditioned for the show committed suicide. The producers of the show told her how ugly she was and how much work she needed, but didn’t put her on the show.

      • Michelle

        Is that really true????

  • abudayah

Isnt there an A&E show called HEAVY that does the same thing? how original can this be? enough of shows with fat pple losing weight – and singing talent s hows….any creative ideas out in hollywood? how about a reality show for regular pple like me that have creative ideas and new ideas for reality and scripted programming but dont live in LA , dont have agents, and have no idea how to get their ideas into action.

    • K

      …start a blog?

    • who cares

how about a remake of an 80′s show?

  • Abby

I always found the original one unsettling – taking tragic looking women and making them look like barbie dolls. Of course, when a man has a baby with them and it comes out hideous they’d be like WTF? LOL ok sorry that’s horrible…funny but horrible!

  • Mya

Wow I bet this one will be a hit just like the home edition show.

  • Jodee

I’m excited and can’t wait! Go James!! =)

  • k

I am really looking for to this. I do not have cable, and this is better than biggest looser. people are made to loose weight so quickly and often regain. hopefully it is not the same on this show.

  • Gladys

Well I think it’s going to be much better than the home edition. It’s made by the same people that make “Biggest Loser” although it’s not a competition. It’s one person and one trainer (unlike Heavy). There are many people that rip off other people’s ideas, but it might have been the other way around…so who knows…just watch and see..

  • jrho

I know one of the girls thats going to be on the show. She looks great now I am glad that she had this chance. Not everyone can pay for what they need to loss weight.

  • natalie

are family needs help with our house

  • delphine

  • Germaine

I have lost a little bit weight over last several months but now it seems like I can not loose any more weight and I really need to and really want to loose weight and doctor really wants me to also so how can do I go about having me a trainer from the show to help me lost the weight I so need to loose
