'Bones': A second 'scare' coming for Angela and Hodgins, says Michaela Conlin -- EXCLUSIVE

We’ve heard from Bones exec producers for months that Angela’s pregnancy would not be without complications. On last night’s episode, we found out that both Angela (Michaela Conlin) and Hodgins (TJ Thyne) are carriers of the recessive gene for LCA (Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis), giving their baby a 25 percent chance of blindness. For Angela, an artist, and Hodgins, a scientist, the news was devastating. In the end, the couple reminded each other that they can deal with anything, which is good, because Conlin tells EW the drama isn’t over. “They have another scare coming,” she says of a script that she’s heard about but has not yet read. “It’s a crazy little end of the season for them.”

Though she hasn’t gotten the official word, Conlin assumes she will be giving birth by, if not in, the season finale. “Hopefully — I’m not wearing that suit anymore,” she says, laughing. “Actually, I’ve grown to have a funny relationship with it. It greets my in my trailer every morning. It has its own little mold that it rests on. I haven’t named it, but I talk to it lovingly. It velcros on to me for 14 hours a day. It goes everywhere with me, obviously. The bathroom, that always takes me about twice as long. I have so much more sympathy for all of my pregnant friends now, and it isn’t even real.” Is she hoping for a traditional labor scene? “No. I wouldn’t want that,” she says, without hesitation. “I would do it, obviously, but I can’t say that that’s on the top of my list of favorite things. TJ and I have been joking about how hilarious that would be to shoot. I have not spoken to [creator Hart Hanson] about that. I would hope that it’s something really unconventional, giving Angela’s crazy past.”

As for this week’s other big reveal, we asked Conlin what dates she hopes Booth and Brennan wrote down in the episode’s final scene when sending out wishes for when they might be ready to get together. “I would hope that they wrote RIGHT NOW in big letters,” she says. “Honestly, I feel like emotionally they’re in such a good place now… That’s Angela’s wish and Michaela’s wish. With exclamation points.” While we all await that day, Conlin herself has reason to celebrate RIGHT NOW: She has a small but crucial role in the courtroom drama The Lincoln Lawyer opening this weekend. She plays a green homicide detective who slips defense attorney Matthew McConaughey some information she probably shouldn’t and is partnered with a grouchy, soon-to-retire cop played by Breaking Bad‘s Bryan Cranston. Is there any will-they-or-won’t-they chemistry between her and Cranston’s characters? “It’s funny that you bring that up, because we joked about that through the entire shooting of the movie,” she says. “There’s not in the script, but we did sort of invent this cool backstory that the two of them were off doing their own things on their off-time.”

Through a friend, Conlin was able to arrange some ride-along time with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force in LA. “It was weird for me at first to be pretending to be a cop, because I have so much respect and reverence for what they do. I had to put that aside, and realize that it’s just what they do,” she says. “They’re still talking about their friends, and who they want to go out on dates with, and what movies are opening that weekend, it’s just that they also save little kids from being harmed by predators.” In other words, that Bones banter is realistic after all.

Glad to hear she’s opposed to the traditional birth scene. Those are so cliché and over used.

  • Liz

Well, dear Michaela, I hope they wrote RIGHT NOW too!

  • Kristen

I was actually thinking they would right ‘ASAP’. That’s what I would have wrote!
Love Michaela, and love the Hodgins/Angela baby storyline, and I hope the baby is ultimately okay!

Angela is a running sore, running from herself and society. Yet in the end her scab will heal us all.

Angela is a great character in this show. I hope the writers value the relationship Hodgins and her are displaying on screen, and will choose to keep it strong. Will the baby be blind? A chance to display yet another obstacle strong couple should be able to over come. Maybe a chance for Angela to come up with an ingenious hardware/software that help blindness. Fun to speculate!

Great article. I can¡¯t wait to hear more about your research tool. If it is as good as your other products, then you will have another winner. Your article pretty much summed up what I have been seeing too. Great to see some hard data.
