Ed Harris cast as John McCain in HBO's 'Game Change'

Veteran actor Ed Harris has been cast to play John McCain in HBO’s upcoming adaptation of the best-selling book Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime, by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin.

The four-time Oscar nominee will play the Republican candidate for the film’s depiction of his 2008 presidential campaign.

Previously, HBO cast Julianne Moore as Sarah Palin in the movie. It will be directed by Jay Roach, who won an Emmy for helming the HBO movie Recount about the 2000 presidential election recount battle, and adapted by Recount scribe Danny Strong.

Harris seems like he could knock this role out of the park, no?

Why Ed Why? is this one movie that you’ll do just for the money??

  • tracy bluth

Ed Harris is one of my favorite actors, and I’m sure his scenes with Julianne Moore will be great.

  • HD

Ed Harris is probably close enough in age to play this, especially with the right make up but I fear this is going to kill his enduring status as a sex symbol. But the acting I’m sure is going to be top notch!

    • kevin

now that Brian Dennehy has lost weight he would be a good one to play Mcain

  • batman

Of all the people who could play Palin, the last person on earth I would pick is Julianne Moore. Should have gone with a younger unknown.

    • sascha

julianne and Sarah are close to the same age. Julianne is an amazing actress, and I’m sure she’ll be amazing.

  • sascha

ed is too young and too thin to play John McCain. But Ed Harris is known for transforming himself for roles, so I’m sure he’ll pull it off. I can’t wait.

Armchair casting: You know who reminds me so much of McCain? Michael Hogan (BSG’s Saul Tigh).

    • ks

come to think of it, you are right.

    • The Devil

Argh! That’s what I was thinking.

    • E

Wow, what a great thought. Too bad they’ve already picked Harris! It’s be great to see the excellent Hogan get more work.

Find parts for Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep, and we got ourselves “The Hours” cast.

    • Tom

John C. Reilly as Mike Huckabee

      • Sarah

        Or as Todd Palin.

    • Terrible Casting Director

Streep is such a chameleon, she could nail Condoleza Rice.

      • hf

Nailing Condoleeza Rice was a job for George.

  • SC

Youngish for the part of McCain, but he’ll no doubt do an amazing job.

  • deedeedragons

    He better start eating.

  • Nate

This is getting ridiculous, but if the filmmakers are just going for multiple Oscar nominees to do these impressions, then Will Smith had better play Barack Obama. And I think Annette Bening as Hillary Clinton is more likely now.

  • derek

Please, please, please cast John Travolta as Bill Clinton!

  • Barack Palin

Its a shame they are no longer around because Redd Foxx and LaWanda Page would have been perfect for the roles of Barack and Michelle.

    • Dee Jones

Not sure if you were trying to be funny or sarcastic, but this comment made me laugh.

    • derek

Redd Foxx would have made a great Al Sharpton.

  • duh

I can’t name one role that Ed Harris has played where I didn’t think he was fantastic.

  • Dee Jones

They better get an actor by the name of Harry Lennix to play Obama. If you don`t know who he is look him up, he really resembles him and even talks like him. And the one and only Angela Bassett should play who else but Michelle. Has those roles been cast?

  • Dominique

They MUST get Harry Lennix to play OBAMA! They must!
