AMC developing alien contact drama from 'Breaking Bad' writer

AMC is developing a new drama series about man’s first contact with extraterrestrial life.

John Shiban (Breaking Bad, The Vampire Diaries) is working on a project called The Voyage that’s in contention for a pilot pickup. The show is billed as a realistic take on First Contact with an ambitious female scientist who works with a team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory as the lead character.

The project is one of several in contention at AMC, but has more buzz than some (two others are The Man With the Golden Ears, about a record executive, and The 4th Estate, about a D.C. investigative journalist — but let’s face it, you want the alien one, right?). Given AMC’s success with zombies on The Walking Dead, wouldn’t surprise me at all if network tackled extraterrestrials next.

I’d watch anything AMC puts out. Anything.

      Amen.

    • MCS

I wasnt fussed on Rubicon, but everything else has been solid

      • trololo

Actually, Rubicon was pretty solid as well. The Walking Dead though was predictable and boring as hell.

  • DW

I definitely want a John Shiban alien show more than something called The Man With the Golden Ears.

  • KraZidave

    Yes please!

  • Mindy

Could be cool. I’ll always give television sci-fi shows a shot. And I always give the AMC shows a chance, too. So, I will definitely watch the first few episodes of this. Hope it is great!

Given that sci-fi is dying across the TV landscape, AMC may be our only hope to resurrect it. Clearly the networks can’t produce quality scifi anymore (“Fringe” being the last holdout…), and as for the SyFy network, well, they’ve destroyed the whole concept of high-quality scifi, in cancelling “Caprica” and “Stargate Universe”.

      AMC, please get it right!

Lost, Heroes, Battlestar Galactica, Fringe, Firefly…. you need to dial back your perpective… the last 10 years def. had more sci-fi than the 90′s.

  • Jeff C.

Too many damn alien projects these days, but it’s AMC so I’ll probably check it out.

  • kevin

So it’s the movie ‘Contact’, but on TV. eh…

    • Jessica

Heh. Your reaction is “Contact on TV, eh.” Meanwhile my reaction is “Contact! On TV! Yaaaaay!” Takes all kinds.

  • bobby draper

Why don’t they just focus on bringing mad men back!

  • Frank

Not to mention that Shiban also worked on the X-Files!

    • Jennifer

Yeah, X-Files was my first thought, too. That was the reason I first checked out Breaking Bad, because Vince Gilligan wrote my favorite X-Files episodes. And that show is amazing. So I’m definitely on board for this, with Shiban attached.

  • Marion

    I’m in if it’s AMC.

  • Apostate

    I’m all in…. Bring it,AMC!

  • michael

will be watching out for this – t.v. genuinely sucks nowadays the only shows i ever go far are ones with a proven pedigree. i say amc + x-files/breaking bad alum + aliens = worth a shot

  • Luna

Seriously, EW? You say that John Shiban is working on an alien show and you don’t mention that he was a major writer for the X-Files?

  • hermione

And cast Katee Sackhoff as the lead, por favor. Kthxbai!

  • rlynh

Hmm, let’s see. A show about a record executive (dull), a DC investigative journalist (even more dull), or aliens (possibly interesting). I know which one I’d pick.

  • norman

If one is interested in alien contact, why not try reprising another 1970′s icon: Project UFO. It did well, on NBC, I think, for two years!
